Some work on the tailcap...

I needed to toss the back of the russ pommel so I could gain SD card access...

So I wanted to do what I did with Cordaroyfog's Obi #1, a custom tailcap access plate underneath the pommel cap...

I'll work out the locking mechanism next,, I have it in my head, just need to draw it out.

Or skip the drawing entirely, I hadn't drawn this section yet anyway, it just came together today out of the blue.

Thank you all for your kind words, I appreciate it.

This might be the most incredible thing i've seen around here. Im going to go devour all of your old build logs, brb.

Well, they're mostly all in one handy place - http://www.slothfurnace.com/

Well, today I spent the morning working on the tailcap assembly.  And figuring out the locking mechanism for the cap, milling the inner cap for the soundboard and SD slot, etc.

That little notch there, it interlocks with the guiderod when the saber chamber is closed, locking the pommel cap.  To get to the SD card, you open the saber chamber, which moves the guide rod forward, out of that notch.

Then you just rotate the pommel cap counter clockwise not quite a quarter turn, and it slides out.

The neat thing is, it's almost a secret unlock for the tailcap.  Without the chamber open, you can't get to it.

Left to do: hollow out my battery cavity, sink the recharge and rice ports, machine the top of the chamber DIN plug/spring holder, build the LED string, start on wiring.

I also plan on documenting the steps I take to build my LED strings for CFLS here, covering my methods, tips and tricks for seriallel and stability of string, etc., so stay tuned.  Look for that in the next week or two as I get some time on vacation to build the strings and work some more on this saber.

Hah yeah, I hear there is, but here's the deal.  I only make one or two of these things a year, as I have a fulltime job at BioWare as lead VFX artist on SWTOR, and I also run a nixie clock kit store.

I reckon I classify that as one fulltime job, one part time job, and a lightsaber hobby that lets me blow off steam from the other two occupations.

Also I have a wife and daughter to spend time with, so for any one lightsaber project I do, I end up only being able to work on it during an hour or two a week, maybe some on the weekends, etc.

Not to say I am not open to people throwing cash my way, but it just isn't logistically possible more than one or two a year at this point.

Excellent saber, man.  I've always loved the Luke V2 and the crystal chamber just makes it SO bada**.

Means quite a lot coming from you, Rob.  Thanks so much!

I needed a rice port in the tailcap, so now there is one.  I also hollowed out the center section some more for the battery pack.

Which just fits with enough room leftover for wires and heatshrink.

I'll need to machine out the same kind of gap in the crystal chamber base that seats in that hole ahead of the battery pack, then set some screws around it under the clamp.

Thanks to Azmaria for the photoetched hexmesh.  It shows off real well in the clamp slots as a dust screen/sound grille.

Those thin necks can be very sturdy, just ask Caine.

Here I am beginning the seriallel LED string construction, with my LEDS run across the belt sander to knock off the domed lens, for diffusion.

And the first set of bends on the leads...

Once you get them all soldered together, You'll end up with the positive track from the top section going to common positive, and the negative track of the top section soldered to the positive track of the flipped bottom section, and the negative track of the bottom section going to ground, or one of the channels on the CFLS

I'd say they're going to be bright enough.  Probably the brightest LEDs I have worked with so far.  This shot and the previous one were taken at the exact same exposure, if that tells you anything.

I just can't imagine what you could acheive if you were full time on this  :o
I mean, such awesomeness with only a few hours a week, man you do really rock  :D

(That SD card access and rice hidden is the cap, just brilliant)

I'm already ashamed to show my Russrep V2 in the future once it'll be completed hehehe
