FX-SABERS Alliance Saber Interest Thread

Alyansang Talim-  the Alliance's Edge  Alyansa for short.

Pronunciation: All-YAWN-song   Taw- LEEM

THIS THREAD WILL BE CLOSED ON SUNDAY, 06/06/10

After voting had finished and Jedi Yar Nala claimed victory, Ace began discussing with him bringing his design to life.  Ace had quite a few concerns about the design and he and Jedi Yar Nala had some email conversations to get some details hammered out and make some design changes JYN would be happy with.  In the end, the saber is fairly close in design to the original render.  .75" of length was added to the Mara Jade section and .25" to the shroud to help balance out the design and allow enough room for almost any soundcard in the MJ section.  The leather wrapping is not a true Tsuka wrapping as it only has the diamond pattern on one side (the sabers will include a metal faux leather shroud for those who do not want the leather).  The design incorporates all that JYN asked for and Ace tried to make it a little more customizable to the end user.  (more on that later)

Here are the final design renders.

This is the final design.  There will be no further changes, so please do not ask.  The final design is based on the work Ace did with Jedi Yar Nala's input and feedback and is based on JYN's vision.

Now, on to the design specifics.

The saber will include the following features:
12" long tip of shroud to pommel face.
1.625" diameter Mara Jade Grip.
1.5" diameter main shroud.
There would be about 2.3" long x 1.33" diameter of room in the MJ section to fit a sound card.
The id of the mid section is 1.05" so you might be able to squeeze a card in there if you want.  Batteries will depend on where you put the card.
Separate LED optic holder unit sized to accept most star base type LEDS (Lux3, LuxV, P4, etc).
Separate crystal chamber unit.
Illuminated Anti Vandal Switch.
Recharge port in Covertech knob.
Machined speaker grill in pommel.
For those who do not want leather wrapping, each saber will ship with a metal sleeve in the basic shape and pattern as the leather wrapping (as seen in the renders above).

Acerocket will supply the following parts with each saber:
Aluminum parts:  pommel, Mara Jade grip section, covertech knob, inner core section (emitter to MJ section), 'tsuka' pattern shroud, outer shroud, threaded spacer for inner core, bling strip, Anti Vandal bezel ring, optic holder housing, heatsink for optic holder housing, and 2 discs for the crystal chassis kit.
Delrin parts:  speaker holder/spacer part.
4 brass tube lengths for crystal chassis kit.
Screws for MJ section, covertech knob, bling strip, crystal chassis kit, blade set screw, optics holder mounting screw and crystal chamber mounting screw.
Plastic LED bezel for crystal chassis kit.
3 carbon fiber strips.
Anti Vandal switch (short ones)

What will be your responsibility to supply:
Main LED, optics and optic holder.
5mm T 1-3/4 LED for crystal chamber chassis
4 X 3mm T 1 LED for blinky setup
crystal
soundboard/driver
speaker
batteries
recharge port
secondary switch (aux if CF is used)
wiring, etc
blade (the bore size of the emitter will be 1.02" which should be good for Ultra blades as they are larger than the TCSS blades.  If someone wants to use a thinner TCSS blade, they will have to deal with a little slop)
anything else Ace didn't mention as being included

The saber will be machine finish - Ace will not be sanding, polishing, buffing, powder coating, anodizing, painting or otherwise finishing any parts.  The buyer will get a raw saber to finish any way they desire.

If you are not going to DIY your own installation, contact a Sabersmith in the Guild or Mining Colony.

Customization:
Obviously, the two biggest choices you have are final colors (paint and LED colors) and leather or no leather.  Beyond that, Ace will offer the following mods to allow the more experienced user to finish their saber to suit their personal tastes:

Pommel - with the standard pattern as seen in the render or with no pattern for those who want to do their own design.  The thickness of the endcap is .05" so it should easy enough for those who dare to cut their own pattern.  Ace will not make custom patterns.

Mara Jade section - with or out without the grooves and with or without the screw holes.  Ace will not do different numbers of grooves/screws or change screw sizes.

Covertech recharge port - Ace can make it with the correct thread pattern for the recharge port or as a solid part if the purchaser does not want the recharge port there.  The purchaser would be responsible for finding an alternate location for the recharge port if they want one.  Ace will not make custom recharge port holes.

Faux 'tsuka' shroud - with the rendered pattern or without any pattern.  Ace will not make custom patterns.  "As rendered" option would have the diamond cutouts and grooves to simulate a faux Tsuka pattern.  Not rendered would be just a smooth sleeve.  The not rendered option is in case an advanced builder chooses to cut their own pattern in the middle shroud instead of the diamond pattern.  All sabers will come with a sleeve regardless of whether you will ultimately choose to have leather or not.  Unless you plan on cutting your own shroud pattern, then Ace suggests the "as rendered" option.

Bead blasting of inner core under 'tsuka' shroud - Ace can bead blast the area under the faux 'tsuka' shroud in case people want to not use it and do leather wrapping to give the material a slightly rough texture to help the leather/epoxy grip a little better.  Ace will only bead blast if requested, otherwise it will be plain machine finished.

Blinky LEDs - with the blinky LED holes through all pieces if you plan on using the blinkies.  Or as just a pattern in the outer shroud (either through or only to a shallow depth) in case you don't want the blinky LEDs.

Anti Vandal switch - Red, Green or Blue color option, but Ace needs to make sure he can get them in those colors first.

Bling Strip - will be a blank strip that attaches via two screws to the saber.  It will be up to each purchaser to customize their stirp themselves.  Ace is not offering this service (there may be someone who will offer this and they will start their own thread).  Ace can offer the saber with or without the screws and holes if requested so that you can maximize the design area (may require some modifications on your end to open up the light window underneath if needed).

Blade set screw -  Right now, Ace will put an 8-32 set screw in the circular cutout of the shroud.  Ace can leave this screw off if you want.  Ace will not do any other blade screw holes.

Optic holder screws -  The present design leaves 1.5" of blade depth to the top of the optic holder.  It has 2 set screws at 180 degrees to secure this unit inside the bore.  Ace can remove these if you wish to change the location of the optic holder.  Ace will not make these holes anywhere else.

Crystal chassis - Ace can offer the crystal chassis as a completed unit as shown in the renders or supply loose parts in case you would like to alter the length of your chassis.  Instead of cutting and threading the tubes, Ace would just supply you with a length of tube you can finish.  Ace will not make any custom sizes/designs.

Crystal chassis screws - There are 2 set screws that secure the crystal chassis inside the saber.  Ace can remove these if you want to mount it differently.  Ace will not make these holes anywhere else.

These are the only options offered.  These are just 'skipping' parts of the base programming while cutting the parts.  Ace will not be able to get into doing custom work that requires new programming for each saber he builds.  There will be no extra charges (nor price reductions) if you choose any options.

Pricing.  Price will ultimately depend on the total number of sabers that make up the run.  Based on a 25-50 saber run, the price will be set at $250.00 per saber.  If the run does not get up to 25, Ace will have to see where it gets and then call a price.  If the run size gets up to near the 50 saber mark, Ace will look into seeing if he can't get it down a little.

When the run begins, Ace will require a down payment of about 35% to cover material costs.  The balance will be due before shipment.

A note on shipping.  We have discussed this behind the scenes and are not keen to see a repeat of the Overlord problems.  Therefore Ace will ship each saber separately to the purchaser and not en masse to separate smiths for completion work if desired.  If you so desire, Ace will ship to the smith of your choice instead of to you.  Shipping will be USPS Priority insured.  You will then make arrangements for payments and shipping with that smith for their work.

One final word on the leather wrapping.  Ace will not offer this.  Period.  There are some talks under way with an individual who may be willing to offer this service and a separate thread will be posted about that when the details are finalized.

OK, I have gotten a few question on the as rendered versus not rendered faux Tsuka shroud.  As rendered option would have the diamond cutouts and grooves to simulate a faux Tsuka pattern.  Not rendered would be just a smooth sleeve.  The not rendered option is in case an advanced builder chooses to cut their own pattern in the middle shroud instead of the diamond pattern.  All sabers will come with a sleeve regardless of whether you will ultimately choose to have leather or not.  Unless you plan on cutting your own shroud pattern, then I would suggest the as rendered option.

Barris, could you please add this to the main thread at the top?

Thanks Master Jinn!  You're much cuter than I am anyway!   :D

(not sure what cuteness has to do with ability, but thought I'd throw it out there anyway...)

Oh, and this serves as a bump.  See how I did that?!
