Electronic idiot needs Batt. help
« on: August 21, 2009, 12:38:34 PM »
Okay, I am sure this has been posted before. I looked through the search and after 3 pages and searching many posts I have finally admitted defeat. I can build and customize like nobody's business and I can even solder and hook things up great. But power issues, I am clueless.
Here is what I've got and what I would like to do.
I have an Anakin ROTS 3 AA board and batt. pack running a P4 blue. What I would like to do because of space and lack of money is to put a smaller batt. in it. I was wondering if a regular 9v could be used?  I am willing to take any other suggestions as well. I can't use the batt pack as the area it needs to fit in is just a bit to small.

6v is really the most u can put to that board.

You may want to try a single trustfire 3.6v either as a homemade battery pack/recharge port or in a 1 AA cell holder. Good luck

A 9V will fry an MR or H FX like a lightsaber through a blast door.

Use a 4 AAA pack

No, the board will fry above 6V.  You may be able to use a voltage regulator set-up but then you will need to separately heatsink the voltage regulator as that is a lot of heat to diffuse.

I'd imagine the run times would be really short as well.

Well, I looked in to the trust fires and they are out of stock. And their shipping cost sucks! :o  Money is still a problem.
I also can't fit the 4 AAA . The pack is really about the same size.  :-\

Dealextreme has free shipping and you can get two trustfires for $5.99.  www.dealextreme.com .  They are a bit slow, but a great resource.

Make 2x2 long pack with a recharge port, not a cube. Place the board on top of the pack to save length wise space.

Hey thank you all for the help! I was just really frustrated. I did some custom work on this saber i am working on and the pack that I had made did not fit like I wanted it too. I didn't know if like Allaerra said I could just use a regulator. I have plenty of room for a 9v.  But, I agree. That is to much work for a short batt. life.
So, what I did was took a 6 batt. pack and modified it to be a three pack with a spot for the sound board.

Like this:    emitter ]P4 blue LED ----AA Bat --- AA Bat        Spea  open sound and crystal chamber
AA Bat--Sound Board  ker  ---------------  crystal                        [pommel

Thanks for getting me thinking again! I needed it!

Oh yes! I should have it done. Monday or Tuesday. I have some custom work to finish for someone else first.
All I have to do is finish the soldering and slide it in place. Then its nothing but saber swooshing and duels with my kids! I always loose of course! ;)
