Activation Switch Won't work
« on: March 22, 2013, 11:49:08 PM »
I just finished wiring up a saber with NB. After I pulled out the kill key I got the boot sound. So I tried turning the saber happen hit the button and nothing happens I have re-soldered the switch a couple times. Tested to make sure there is voltage being delivered.

Here are a couple pictures of the wiring so that maybe you can help me figure why it isn't working.

Sorry for them not being the best pictures seeing as the only camera I had with me when I took them.

What kind of switch is it?

The NB only accepts momentary, so if it's latching it won't work.

If it's a momentary, and you have one of TCSS's AV switches, you may have the wires attached to the wrong poles.

Test it by desoldering from the switch and touching the leads together and see if it activates. Then go from there.

Agreed with Caine. Try taking the switch off, pulling the kill key, and then touching the wires from the switch pads together. If you get a power-on, then that means the issue was with the switch.

As Caine stated, let us know what kind of switch your using.  ;)

The two yellow wires and two green wires appear bridged to me.  That may have also fried the speaker and may be why the switch isn't working.  There may be other things bridged as well.  Too much solder and your wires are hanging bare off the board which can create both shorts and ground loops. I would recommend some desoldering braid.  Get everything cleaned up and try again with freshly stripped and pre-tinned wires :).

Yes the switch is momentary. It is the Guarded Style Switch from TCSS. I will try touching the switch pads together see if it is in the switch. I do have some desoldering braid. So I will get around to desoldering it. I do not think the speaker is fried because like I said I get the boot sound.

if you get the boot sounds, you might now try to just remove the switch and try a manual connection between the 2 activation wires. If that doesn't work, desolder your activation wires and try with fresh connections. No reason the saber won't turn on. Check also that you don't have a short between the 2 activation pads.

I got it working but I did redo the solder to clean it up a little bit.
