Title: Novastar and Caine's Saber Combat System "NCSCS" (1st COMPLETE System!)
Post by: Novastar on May 04, 2010, 11:24:39 AM
EDIT:  Caine (KJN Mark Preader) and I decided to team up and combine our work/ideas/techniques into one complete system!  If you're reading this... the information below is still applicable... but it's not just "my" work anymore!!  We doin' it TWO-gether, heheh.  NovaCaine out, lmao... :P
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Since I released my very basic staged combat tutorial on the Crystal Focus Compendium #1...

(located here... ... ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXqVDgz3woQ )

...back in August of 2008 (the tutorial was bundled in there with all the crazy sounds and so forth!!)...
...I have long wanted to:

* Release the 1st staged combat tutorial "on its own" or with other related materials
* Work with Caine together on some combat concepts (which we have done)
* Work on a more complete "system" that includes at least "a little of everything"
* Include some basic "tricking" or hand-to-hand combat moves
* Film at least one more sizeable 100% live long battle (like the 250 battle on NSCFCD#1)

So... my question to the general folks out there is...

...would anyone want to pick this up?  As in--would it be interesting enough for you to buy, given the fact that I really don't KNOW how many of you enjoy dueling, practice certain moves, apply it to choreography/sparring, etc. etc.

Caine and I are working together to help one another on these, so... keep that in mind!  We're learning together on these... helping one another out... growing concepts together, and generally trying to make a great overall system!

Some things included would be:

* Numbering system and basics (of course)... these are from tutorial #1
* Basic saber spins with a system to identify these... and build more complex "chains of spins" -- shout out to "Banditcar" (Paul) on these, since... he's basically covered these in a very awesome way!!
* Saber spin "form" -- for practicing as many types of spins as you can all at once
* Combat forms that "match up" as attack form vs. defense form... which can be learned/practiced individually... but these also PAIR/SYNC UP PERFECTLY and WORK TOGETHER!  :)
* Advanced moves and the pedagogy/notation system of writing everything down so that you and a partner (or more!) can pick up a "fight sheet"... and start practicing!  Or... if you are trying to put together a fight--you need not memorize everything all at once--writing it down in a succinct manner will help you pick it up a week later, a month later, etc. etc.
* Basic "tricking" & kicking moves, and quick, succinct walk-throughs to learn these moves.  I'll focus only on moves that I think anyone and everyone could learn (given time + work), and also ones that can be done easily while holding an LED prop / saber prop, etc.

It's a bit hard to explain how my staged combat tutorials will unfold together... but I can guarantee that it will change the way you look at choreography and... if you've always felt that you "could never do a saber fight" with someone because you feel everything is "too complex" to remember or even execute... ah-ha!  I have another guarantee that when I break it all down... you could easily begin to see--it would merely take some practice + time & effort to make a pretty dynamic and interesting fight/choreography piece!

OK!  So... would love to hear your honest opinions on these things.  :)  I mean... no sense in me doing such a thing if it would only help 5-10 people, hehehh!  But for 30-60 or > people... I would most definitely do it.

Much thanks to you all, and... look for teaser videos soon enough--that will help give an idea of what you'll see!

MAY THE FOURTH BE WITH YOU!!!!    (~*~*~*~*~*~* Teaser Video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1w7ZFLWKG-g *~*~*~*~*~*~)

Again, super big shout out to Mark (Caine) for helping me with the filming of my objectives.  It's impossible to film such things alone, heheheh (duh).

I'm interested.
Loved your BOP I and II and would be totally interested in learning (and maybe being able to teach others :o) staged combat moves.

*raises hand*  I'm interested.   :)

Gotta love a good, user-friendly tutorial... especially for those of us who are no longer in an active martial-arts program/routine...  :-\

Sounds great!  ;D

I would 100% get it. The first one, in the compendium, was very informative and helpful. A full length, with all these features would be very nice.

Post by: Caine on May 04, 2010, 07:44:31 PM
It's good to see all this interest!

Nova and I were talking today about this....this system that we are working on is to be the most dynamic, thorough and comprehensive LED saber system EVER developed. Whereas Nova's focus is primarily stage combat, my focus is:

*The Forms Of Saber Combat.....as Nova mentioned they are now more about fighting styles moreso than a kata (it can still be done that way, too!)
*Saber to saber disarms
*Utilizing real martial arts with your saber.
*Fun and exciting drills to do in your saber classes/clubs

Would y'all like us to do a JOINT release DVD or a SINGLE release from each of us?

Please keep in mind that we need to price this properly. Nova is a master stage combat choreographer and certified fencing instructor...I am a 5th degree black belt and martial arts school owner with 18 years of experience in several martial arts...I am not tooting our own horns here but please remember that there is tremendous value in what we are offering...we meet every Friday and train 2 plus hours to bring you all this stuff...so we want to make sure this reflects in the price.

Why? Because we feel that saberplay/martial arts is one of the best things you can do   ;D

Thoughts.....

I say a combined DVD. If the tutorials are clear, concise, and slow enough for me to learn from, paying for the instruction would be well worth it.  From the looks of the interest thus far, we are all willing to pay for our own at home private lessons.

Combined- both names on the box plus that much more content will help it sell.

For what I plan to release... it certainly would.  Basic spins would be covered... additionally, I'd pick up where I left off regarding the staff actions from my first tutorial (really, it's not all THAT much different in terms of the targets with the combat system I use).  I'll cover some on dual sabers (not DUEL sabers, hahahah) as well.  Notation becomes really important with these of course.

Oh, and I CAN cover duel sabers.  ;)

I would certainly be interested in this...I have the FX Sabers spin DVD and Caine's Level 1 DVD and if I ever get lucky enough to get a CF will definitely get Novastar's Compendiums too but this collaboration sounds like the logical 'Next Great Step' to take saber arts 'to the next level'.

Imo a JOINT release on a single DVD from both Masters working together would be doubly impressive and create a 'synergy' that would be AWESOME...I certainly can understand how the price should reflect that and think any serious saberfan could understand that too. Very best of Luck with this it is a great idea!

Candidly, though I've been meaning to pick up Anakin's spin DVD and Caine's DVD, as well as Novastar's sound founts if I ever get a CF, I've neglected to do so because of the hassle inherent in it.  PM this guy, then send him money via Paypal, wait for some indeterminate period of time for it to arrive... rinse and repeat for each item.  I'd definitely pay a premium for the simplicity.  Not only would I buy both of these DVDs you're talking about, but if you had a package with both Nova's sound fonts, I'd buy that too.  If you could somehow link up with Anakin and include his spin tutorial DVD, the circle would be complete.

One final thought, it's always baffled me that none of these DVDs or CDs are available on a retail site like Ultrasabers or TCSS.  I would love to have access to pick up the DVDs along with other purchases within an established e-commerce system, plus it might broaden the audience.  Might be worth looking into.

These are all GREAT ideas of course!  Really!  Some have been considered before (you'll see below from my response)...

Now... still, understand that I'm just one dude trying to do what I can, bring my customers good stuff... yet ALSO minimize complexity for myself as well.

As for my current CDs and ordering--it's a very simple transaction ( http://www.thecuttingedge.s5.com/bop/nstar_cdset.html ) and I ship quickly.  Always have.  Anyone who orders on (for example) Monday usually means I'll ship Monday or Tuesday, and depending on where you are... CD(s) arrive within a few days.  Shipping costs are an average of precisely what I must pay.  In fact lately... shipping outside the U.S. now costs me MORE than what I list, but... I figure it all works out in the end.

If you could somehow link up with Anakin and include his spin tutorial DVD, the circle would be complete.
Funny you mention that... Paul and I used to chat a bit--some years ago.  I just messaged him yesterday--we'll see what can be done!  I was thinking something similar...

One final thought, it's always baffled me that none of these DVDs or CDs are available on a retail site like Ultrasabers or TCSS.  I would love to have access to pick up the DVDs along with other purchases within an established e-commerce system, plus it might broaden the audience.  Might be worth looking into.
Ironically enough... these things HAVE been looked into.  I approached TCSS some time ago regarding the CF CDs, but they don't really "fit" there anyhow since Tim doesn't sell Crystal Focus anyhow.

Ultra (Alex) approached me some time ago about the staged combat tutorials... but the follow-up work just isn't/wasn't there.  I imagine there have been a lot more stressful things going on for Ultra, including the weird goings on with the US board (and it being discontinued)... and other things.

I have new websites coming... one for my main "sabre fencing" job... and the other for the whole "Novastar" and SW style stuff.  Hopefully on my upcoming "SW" or Novastar site... we can include exactly of what you speak!!  As in:

* Links to buying (or direct shopping cart) for Anakin's (Paul's/Banditcar's) Saber Spin Tutorials
* Links to buying (or direct shopping cart) for Caine's (Mark's) Saber Combat Tutorials
* Obviously, direct shopping for NSCFCD#1 and NSCFCD#2...
* Also, Novastar's Staged Combat Tutorial #2...
* Eventually... a CF Sound Font "library", complete with links, videos/examplers and descriptions--not just of "my own" fonts on the CDs (guest fonts too!)... but hopefully a list of others' fonts as well
* Eventually... (yikes)... ... NSCFCD#3... (which may end up being a DVD)

So... yes... LOTS to come I suppose!!  And obviously, with Caine and myself working together (not just because it's "smart", it's also because we've really become good friends!!)... it's a stronger/better end result than if we just worked alone.

To add to this, it's also important to note:

Nova and I are actually in the talks of forming our own website (I say we call it "NovaCaine Concepts"  HAHAHAHA )

This site will be dedicated to ALL things saber combat and saber combat only. We would obviously make our CD's available for order on this site of course.

*I also am thinking about making a compendium of my original saber forms....the YouTube ones that started it all....as a special release. I still have then all, and they can be considered "beginner" forms per se.

*Nova and I still need to finalize this, and I still need to confirm it...it would be cool to do a joint release...two powerful and attractive saber players showing you da moves...who can put a price on that???  ;D

*I am going to speak to Alex regarding carrying the CD's. Alex has been a great help in selling me sabers for my saber combat classes, and this would only benefit Ultrasabers even more....obviously, TCSS isn't a choice because Tim has his own business model to focus on and that's cool. I support Ultra in every way I can and this will support him more.

*With the last C.F. release, I included my Level 1 DVD (which I think I am actually going to scrap since our system has evolved so much)...I may just include that Forms Compendium CD as with the next release if Erv would like....I still need to talk to him about that.

With mine and Nova's combined strength, we can....oh never mind... you get the picture.  :D

Ok!  Now that the wedding is over (yup, my wedding... not to mention--Caine (Mark) officiated!!)... ... we're back to work on this.  :)

We'll release another teaser soon enough.  In general, we'll probably break it down into a few DVDs, each with certain "levels" of stuff.  This way we can:

* Offer content as we finish filming/editing/organizing
* Allow people to buy one part of the package, some of it, or all of it...
* Offer a package deal when everything is 100% complete
* Avoid feeling like we have to "pack it all in" to a single DVD

There's a bit more to say/update you guys on with this, but we'll save that for another time!  Hopefully soon!

Thanks again to you ALL for posted some words of blessing regarding my marriage... very cool of y'all...  8)

Caine created this 2nd teaser, and I think it looks great!  He did a fine job (he's just starting to mess with editing video), so tell him what ya thought!!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Oi_LUv_EIM

I'm personally looking forward to unleashing the system on everyone.  In fact--I don't think people quite know the extent of how detailed it will be.  It's literally a complete combat system... definitely geared toward "Star Wars" style stuff... but the system is also very "portable"...

What I mean by that is... if you learn what we'll be teaching--it can be applied to almost any art, "move" or technique you've learned...

It's hard to explain what I mean... but you will all see, soon enough.  Most of the unexplainable part... will be in the NOTATION, denotation, and general pedagogy of putting it all together... into one coherent and COMPLETE system!!  :)

Just as a matter of note, Caine and I recorded some staff stuff last time we met/filmed.  :)  Good stuff.  And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

And yes, the video does work!  :)  Y-tube sometimes goes down/has issues of course, as all sites do.

Finally... forgive both Caine and I for "double-posting" the videos (both on each of our y-tube accounts)... but it makes sense so that we don't miss out on letting anyone know!

I would be all about getting this set when it's ready.  As an intermediate when it comes to fight choreography and a barely-trained neophyte in actual swordplay arts, I sadly don't have much to offer in terms of offering my own contributions to the saber-dueling community, but I've been following Caine's stuff for a while, and would love to learn the complete system that you guys are developing.

@Jasher... I was *just* talking to my wife about that.  Seriously... sometimes--I think the Flange IIIs actually HAVE pole-vaulted over the line... and are ~too~ loud...

@Bazzard...

You know what?  If all goes the way I'm hoping... eventually:

* People will utilize the system to express their OWN choreography...
* People will share said choreography and be able to post at our new site (sabercombat.com)
* I would like to get people to use the system to express choreography from Nick Gillard's work (Star Wars)... and any other fights in movies they've seen... just as practice and to TEST to see if the system can help express 85% to 90% of any given fight scene!!

The last one is tough to explain, but... all will be revealed in good time.

As it is... I'll probably open a new thread concerning a "behind-the-scenes" project I'd like to place on the community.  These people would get a "sneak peek" at the system... major credits on the DVD... and probably a free DVD set!!  HOWEVER... it *WOULD* require study and work.  More on that later though... :)

And Spence... glad to hear you did 2 years of staged combat in college!  I remember those days, it's definitely a lot of work to "get it right" (to be convincing for an audience).  I certainly know you'll find some good stuff on the DVDs in relation to things such as "camera"/viewer angles and so forth...

But... back to work for me!

Yaaargh, it's been like 6 months since we announced stuff on May the 4th (heheh)... but lemme tell you guys... we're still working on things!

We have enough footage to get DVD #1 going into the editing process (or at least 90% of it)... but it's been a problem for us to get together and get the work in.  We both have our own businesses, and... it's tough these days to do things in "spare time".

(SPARE TIME?!?!?  WHAT THE HECK IS ~THAT~?!?!?)

Anyhow... bear with us.  It is most ugly when one is juggling 1,138 projects at a time... ;)  As you all know... ALL TOO WELL!

Hope everyone's summer months were stylin' and stellar...

Most likely not. We are going to wait until we are totally done with it before posting a sale thread.

Because of my business (getting SUPER busy this time of year) lack of time to film has been an issue. We are getting together and doing some more work next week, and it will be touch and go from there. Real careers take precedence, ya know.  ;)

Yah, I'm going to second the notion of not doing pre-orders.  Much as we'd like to do so.  I mean, I do NOT want to "someday become" the guy who promises something to the LED saber community and then magically renege on said promise.  We've all already seen too much of that, and... I ain't "goin' there", even if it would be deemed "by accident" if that all went down.

What Caine and I *CAN* promise is... yup... it's comin'.  Comin'... when it's READY.  :)

Nope, not as long as Duke4ever... hahahah!!  ALTHOOOOUUUUUGGGHHH.... apparently... Duke Nukem Forever... *IS* apparently coming out soon!!!??!?!  Not a joke.  I did some thread about it in my sound studio.

But anyway, back on topic, we recorded a few more things this past Friday and are almost ready now to start editing/building DVD#1.  Shouldn't be long now.

One BAD thing... :(   (Wwwwaaaaaaah!!!!)  My bloody staff broke... at least... the "sound" half of it is not working (no light, no sound)... and I have no idea why.  There actually isn't any GOOD reason it should have failed so completely... unless the battery is now (magically?) totally dead... which is rare for Li-Ion unless you've really pushed it to the absolute limit.

So... I gotta tear it apart and see what's happening.  I don't have any other LED staff and neither does Caine.  It wouldn't be that big of a deal to me except that it PISSES ME OFF because I want to keep filming staff stuff for *YOU* guys!!  So it drives me bonkers that I can't DO anything with it for now.

I haven't had time to repair it and/or assess repairs on it, but... maybe I'll have time soon enough.

It wasn't the best setup ANYHOW, so... chances are, I'll just remake it only better...

Well I completely appreciate it, Novastar.  I'm in the process of constructing my first lightsaber, and it's going to be a a double-bladed saber (because that's how I roll).

It'd be awesome if, once complete, I could actually learn how to use it and look cool doing it.  I eagerly await the release of this DVD awesomeness.

* Photo shoot for the DVD this Friday...
* Probably 90% or more of what is slated for DVD1 is already filmed...
* Still lots of material that is planned for DVD2, 3, etc. is also there--we just want to make sure #1 comes out strong...
* Still lots to be decided, it's just a long process since Caine and I are sometimes not even able to meet consistently once a week, due to busy schedules teaching classes...

* I'm almost finished repairing the new staff saber I created in order to film staff stuff for these DVDs... the board just "went dead", and really, there is no other explanation than bad luck (??)... I mean, I've never had a board just "die" for *NO* reason, lol... there are no flaws in the wiring, no shorts, no weird things... and I wasn't even feeding it much voltage (just a single Li-Ion).  So... whatever, I needed some other board vs the SW616 I had, and thanks to someone from the forum, I was able to get a Mace board in my hands!

Well, I can't think of anything else too pertinent right now... just that it's a TON of work, and I'll be honest--I'm ~not~ looking forward to the editing on this one, heheh!!  I've already done so many video projects over the years (and recently)... I'm burnin' out on it, hahaha!!

BUT... it has to be done.  :D

...Anybody want to lend NOvastar a Staff so he can finish the filming?!?!
I've actually already repaired the staff I built, heheh... but thanks.  Yeah... it was weird.  The little 616 board just sort of "croaked" I guess, I really have no idea--there is absolutely nothing wrong with it, no burns, no possibility for overheating, nothing fancy.  I was even running it at the default 350mA with the LED and just "living with it", heheh.

Oh well, it doesn't matter, I replaced it with a board that will allow a lot more current to flow, so the staff will now look a lot more EVEN anyhow, hahahah.  Before, the other side was direct drive at around 1500mA and waaaaaay brighter than the '616 sound' side @350mA (duh).  :)

Anyway, let's hope December brings me some time to edit video.  Caine and I may still have to film a few follow-up/addendum things for DVD1, but... yeah... it's mostly all filmed up.   ;D

Only update I can make is that Caine and I are getting together this Friday to basically do the following:

* Review all of the footage we've compiled/shot
* Not all of that footage is going on DVD1... the point was--we shot as much as we could to be certain "it was right" for DVD1 to be able to be made, and other stuff is there for the next DVD + we'll (obviously) film more and more as the months progress
* Take note of anything extra/missing(?) we'd like to film for DVD1
* Get an idea of how we want to edit it... as... before, we'd only done "our own things"... now it's a "WE" thing, and so we'll want to split the editing workload and all that jazz, yet stay consistent on the overall presentation so you guys don't feel it's as if we were editing on different planets!!
* In general, the editing will be a "simplistic" presentation, and not attempt to go all Ridley Scott nor James Cameron... :)
* Possibly (keyword: POSSIBLY) find a way to meet much more consistently... as we have RARELY been able to film even once a week consistently due to logistics, scheduling, events + DRL... :)

Now... in case I/we hadn't mentioned it before, the GENERAL categories of videos you'll see on each DVD will be as below.  Each category will have 1 or more videos per DVD:

* BASICS SECTION (there will probably be many of these on DVD1, obviously)
* ADVANCED SECTION (there will probably be many of these on DVD2, 3 etc., obviously)
* SPARRING / COMBAT DRILLS (these are related to "non-choreography", and more "fight" moves/drills)
* STAGED COMBAT EXTRAS (these are related to staged combat, and highlight techniques to entertain an audience or give variety to your choreo)
* MARTIAL ARTS & TRICKING (Tutorials.  Depending on the DVD, these could be basic or advanced tutorials)
* MYTHBUSTING (Oh yes, that's right... we'll be covering some of these.  :)  You'll see what I mean later on)
* SPECIAL BONUSES and/or Bloopers...

This does not mean we'll lay it out ~exactly~ as such, but you get the idea.

The overall goal is exactly as we stated from the beginning--to try to make some sort of COMPLETE system.  Not to say that it will magically cover every single possible action/spin/whatever you could ever do... nor even that we won't be purposely "leaving out" certain things.  But the project is relatively massive when you consider we're trying to allow for as much variety as possible...

You'll see "practical" drills... which are (from a martial arts perspective) foundational and applicable to many and/or ALL martial arts...
You'll see "saber spinning"... of course we'll merely identify many spins, and leave the great tutorials for singular spins to Anakin (aka Paul / Banditcar!!!)
You'll see "combat actions"... naturally stemming from the 1-10 foundational system I've worked hard on building over the years.
You'll see "mythbusting"... where we'll be either de-bunking some stupid & useless technique... or just experimenting to see what happens when you have X & Y and do Z (such as Lightwhip vs. Saber!!)
etc.

So... lots of stuff, probably something for everyone, that's sure.

Oh and don't forget that Saber Staff actions will also be present pretty much all throughout all of the DVDs as well.  :)

Cheers!

I've been trying to learn some of the moves I've seen you guys do (and failing miserably I might add) (been kinda hard lately cause my back is super screwed up, but that's not the point) and this DVD sounds like it would help people that are learning as well.

Keep up the good work!

Post by: Novastar on December 05, 2010, 12:16:04 PM
No worries, Veers.  Keep in mind--there are plenty of people out there that can do X or Y better than us... and of course plenty of times where WE are doing some moves/stuff better than person Z or whatever...

The true thing to remember is... you don't get good at ANYTHING--without practice + dedication to excellence + refinement.  National-level fencers I've met have told me that they "still" need to practice lunges every day, and do at least 50-100 of them.  If you didn't know, a "lunge" is a pretty foundational and super super rudimentary part of fencing.  Just like a step forward (advance) or a step back (retreat).  But everyone, and I mean EVERYONE needs to practice basics over and over to maintain any kind of high level.  It's not just my opinion... it's just the way it is, and it IS what it is!  :)

Hopefully these DVDs will start bridging gaps between "SW fans / collectors"... and allow those who really want to have at least SOME martial arts basics imbued within them--to do so!  And at the same time... even experienced folks will learn good stuff from Kwan Jang Nim Mark (Caine) and myself...

Small update...

Darth Real Life is fully in effect for both of us, but we managed to get some good practice in last time we met.  Problem is, my camera decided to fail BIG TIME, although I think it's just the whole "tape heads need cleaning" thing.  I hope!  :)  Curse the "old school" mini-DV tapes... here in this digital + HD age, hahahah.  We couldn't film a darn thing, although we'd planned to get a LOT more on video...

Anyhow, we're pretty solid on filming Forms 3 & 4, which are respective to one another as both attack & defense forms (just like Forms 1 & 2).  The defense form here (4) is based on one of the original forms Caine created and/or modified from his form DVDs.  Don't forget to check those out!  Anyhow... what I did is "graft in" an attacking form (3) that matched the basic structure of the defensive form...

That is the general idea: to create forms that not only help you practice "moves"... but have a MATCHING attack or defense form that can be applied with it for further practice!

In some ways--this goes a bit against the tradition of what MA forms were all about: self-practice--but I think otherwise.  I say that it will simply help people continue to focus on understanding the MEANING behind action X, Y or Z.  That is--are you defending, dodging, attacking, etc. with any given move?

With enough practice... two individual people who have individually studied matching "pairs" of forms (one studying defense, one studying attack) should actually be able to meet for the first time... and accomplish QUITE A BIT together, basically as paired choreography.  :)

This isn't to say everything would "be perfect"... but I'm willing to bet people would be surprised at how well they could "match up" (for example) with form 3 vs. form 4.

Anyhow.  ... ....

We also worked on (and discovered!) a bunch of saber disarms.  Man those are FUN.  :D  Although I can safely agree with Caine: "In reality... incidental and/or accidental".  Some are more geared to staged combat... others--take only "1.5" or 2 actions, so they COULD fall into reality if done well enough...

Video editing still happening too of course!!!

Excellent news, thanks for the update Nova'. Really appreciate the hard work yourself & Caine are putting into this. Sorry to hear about the technical difficulties but I'm sure you'll get them ironed out in due course. Can't wait to start practising the different forms with my better half so we can put on the occasional spontaneous show at some of the local annual con's.
Title: Re: Novastar and Caine's Staged Combat System (1st Complete System!)
Post by: Caine on February 26, 2011, 11:33:45 AM
I am pretty excited to see where this is going, and Forms 3 & 4 are among my favorites of what we have done so far. For those of you who know of Soresu (my version that I "borrowed" from the NY Jedi), form 3 is a very dynamic version of this, with martial arts techniques thrown in to make it somewhat offensive, with the form still maintaining its overall defensive demeanor. This of course makes form 4 the attacking side, which is very aggressive (I would say if you wanted to put it into canon terms, somewhat  "Juyo-ish"  :D

But like Nova said, time is certainly a challenge, and now of the essence (as most of you folks know, baby #2 is on the way for me) and because of our schedules, meeting once a week is all we can do, 2 hours at a time.

Thanks for all your patience on this. I will talk to Nova about releasing something soon to wet your appetites.   ;)

In the meantime, I will still be releasing little saberplay tidbits here and there on YouTube for all of you to focus on as well.

This is a good update. You may hate mini dv but they are the best option for home video work IMO. ;)

That is neat in theory two people could meet and do a choreographed battle. I hate it when you fight to win and people complain because it lasts 30 seconds and it doesn't look near as good as a choreographed dance. I look forward to having this option.

I want to swear SOOOOOO bad right now...

Camera is defunct.

:(

We'll film some of the remaining stuff with Caine's camera, but it looks like I'm out a lot of cash right now, seeing as I had already sunk about $100+ into this cam before my wedding and the France trip/honeymoon... and another $40 for the "DV head cleaner".  Yes, it cost $40.  What a sucker I am.

All the cam does now is neither play DV tapes nor record.  Just shows a blue screen of death.  How IRONIC!  lmao

I don't think this will delay DVD1 much... but it certainly puts a snag in the system for CERTAIN!

I appreciate that, but... nahh... the good news is:

Looks like I'm goin' HD on yer arses, y'all...

:)

Uh... that is IF HD is the bright side of an $800-ish train wreck... which is about the cost of the original cam + all the extras I've dumped into it over the years, lol.  D'ohh.  Not to mention, I don't know what to do with the 10+ mini-DV tapes I have from OTHER projects that I cannot use now... :(

ANYhow... we filmed with Mark's cam today, but... Caine's cam uses SD memory cards... and we ran out of memory at the end, lol!!!  D'OHHHHH!!!

When the curse is lifted (SOON)... the DVD#1 will be finished!!!  Mark my words, it's gettin' done, by hook or by crook...

Oh, and the powers that be came down and told us: "The beatings will continue until morale improves."   :o  Sooooo... looks like we have our work cut out for us...  ;D

EDIT:  Tossing around idea for a replacement cam (after some distinct & painful research)... Panasonic HDC-TM700.... does anyone have anything to say about this?

Sounds kewl, looks like amazon has it for 750 and free shipping!

the camera is capable of recording at 1920x1080 resolution in 60 PROGRESSIVE frames per second and has a nice 35mm wide-angle len so it looks like we may be getting a whole new level of production from y'all.  Can't wait to see the results of your next project filmed with it.

Arg, that reminds me... I needz to bringz some extras SD cards for you... although... hmm, I wonder how big do they have to be?

This digital video thing is new to me.  I mean I'm so used to mini-DV tapes, it doesn't always "stay in my head" as to how much physical HDD space raw video can take up... but I know it takes *A LOT*.

ESPECIALLY if we go HD / hi-qual.  I mean Christ on a unicycle... 1920 x 1080 must eat a *THRONG* of space per minute of video!!!!  O.O

Novastar should do a free style ataru form demonstration 720 spins, front flips, and back flips. aerials and other acrobatic feats while swinging the lightsaber. Maybe even imitate Yoda's choreography from AOTC, that would pretty cool.

I've been trying to imitate the Yoda fight choreography, but havent really found a place where I could do it. My martial arts school's ceiling isnt that high up - its only as a high as official NBA basketball rim (I would know, cuz I can jump that high even though im only 5'6" :'( ) and Im afraid of flipping and swinging and my saber hitting the ceiling.

If I do manage to find a place and record it decently, Ill share it with everyone. But I still want to see Novastar do it, since he seems to have more resources (based of the acrobatic vids I see him in) and Im sure he can because he is acrobatic enough to do that 720 Street Fighter Ryu/ Ken spin kick and a bunch of basic front/back flips.

Well... I'm getting PRETTY darn old for doing a lot of the flips and spins, but... it HAS been planned by Caine and I from as far back as January 2010 (not 2011, mind you) to do a more acrobatic form.  :)

I won't spoil too much, but I think it is sufficient to say:

* The acrobatic form is primarily defensive / evasive
* It's definitely more for staged combat vs. "reality moves", since flips and spins IN THE AIR are extremely impractical--for the mostpart--in sparring / combat.  Although spin hook (which remains on the ground) is a bread and butter move of sport TKD... and can be DEVASTATING for certain.  I've even seen Kim Do (look him up for those who aren't into MA) do a forward flip kick to knock out/down his opponent.  The technique is basically called a "loser" (as opposed to a "gainer") with a kick.
* The paired forms require extremely precise timing... and the attacker helps to maintain the highest level of safety while the defender performs most of their techniques.

Remember too: this paired form is meant to be done LIVE... so we'll be demonstrating it from point A to Z with no stops.  :)

Still... this form is a long ways away... probably for DVD3 is my guess.  And it stands to reason that people will need competency in some basic "tricking" or jumping moves (such as b-kick, b-twist, flash kick, aerial, pop cres, etc.) to make things work.  So--the form is somewhat prohibitive unless replacement moves that "get the same job done" can be swapped in.  Which I've accounted for in most places... but... obviously, flips & spins are more impressive.  :)

I want to learn acrobatics....

Anyone can learn acrobatics, it just requires determination, willpower and practice. A good role model to compare yourself and compete with is also helps a lot. I started TKD about 5 years ago. Im a black belt now, but 5 years ago when I was a white belt, there were plenty of really talented black belts who did awesome acrobatics. I was in awe, but I didnt simply wished my body could do that. After class, I would spend more than an hour bruising my body just to be able to flip and move like them. By the time I was a yellow belt, I  was able to do 360 spin kicks as fast as the black belts. By the time I was a green belt, I was probably one of the fastest fighters. Fast forward to the current black belt me. I can do a 900 spin, 5 feet vertical leap without a spring(legs bent not straight 90 degrees perpendicular to the floor), 12-15 feet leap distance(again without a spring), and can do multiple blindingly quick kicks at head height. Not only that, having a goal allows you to improve. Because I'm short, 5'6 at 19 years old, I gave myself the goal to be the fastest. A lot of people, wherever I go, underestimate me because of my height when I spar, which they soon regret when they realize that all their power is useless if they cant hit me.

I'm in no way trying to brag about what I am capable of, Im just trying to convey that athletic feats(although having an athletic body helps) in my opinion is obtainable with the proper mind set, because I think that even if you're body is not athletic, you will eventually be able to be acrobatic through endless practice because slowly, without you realizing, you are developing the necessary muscles to perform the technique. Just as an infant that cant walk because of weak legs and lack of balance will eventually be able to walk as it continues to get up from falling and learning how to balance and slowly develop its leg muscles.

Acrobatics isnt easy, like I said it requires mental focus and determination and a willingness to injure your body :-\ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ja_TQizb9sc (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ja_TQizb9sc)
Also, although you have to go past your limits to improve, you also have to know when to stop because it will all be useless if you break your body to the point of never being able to attempt anything again.

Since Kim Do was mentioned, his stuff is cool. I also like Steve Terada's movements. I dont know if he is a fighter though, but he is most definitely a top notch crowd performer.

I can do a few things. Handsprings cartwheels the diving combat roll. I can jump high, I just don't understand the mechanics of some of the more advanced techniques. I have someone who is supposed to start teaching me, unfortunately business is a factor in this. I work on what I know consistently. I just need to have someone physically show me the other things. I'd like to learn Parkour but I don't even know where one of their gyms are.

These days, online tutorials can help bridge the gap between what you can and cannot do... but are willing to RESEARCH, TRAIN, STUDY and PREPARE yourself for.

I don't want to "over de-rail" this topic, but I'll just say--I recommend (for a SINGULAR example out of many)... "Epic"'s tutorials (Kyle Mendoza)... for both tricking and free-running actions.

Also--just to help perpetuate general clarity of terminology on physical arts here:

* Parkour is the art of traversing paths & obstacles in the most efficient way (it was actually present in the world as early as the 1920's)
* Free-running is the art of SELF-EXPRESSION via traversing paths & obstacles in any way the practitioner sees fit.  It often includes acrobatic motions that would otherwise be deemed "superfluous" or inefficient when looking at things from a Parkour mindset.  In my own research, it is ambiguous as to where the TRUE "first" free-running concepts originated.  Although I have my opinions...

Also in my opinion and interpretation: Free-running is to Tricking as Parkour is to "real-time" combat martial arts.

Anyhow.  This thread is about the combat DVDs, so I'd best refrain from de-railing so much!!  But still... I hold enough appreciation for all the arts mentioned here... that I want anyone who is reading the thread to have a general understanding of the differences they see out there.  Especially because I often see people:

* Confusing parkour with free-running... or "interchangeably" making the two "one"--which is incorrect.
* Bashing one over the other... sometimes because they are indeed ignorant of the differences.
* Confusing Tricking with being all about techniques to punch or kick someone "in a real fight".  Which is--of course--a stupid argument from the beginning... but it shows ignorance when people watch (for example) a HyperHook and then say "That's lame, you could never hit me with that."

Alright.  Enough of shouting from the soap box... :_

That annoys me as well when people say things like that. Youtube is flooded with comments like that. Although people think "Something like that can never hit me", 9x out of 10 if someone swung a bat really really telegraphically, they'll still be hit with it (which I think is the same thing really as being hit with any sort of trick). Not to mention, people who say that probably don't have martial arts training at all anyway.

But yea back on to the topic of "Novastar and Caine's Staged Combat System (1st Complete System!)"

Hey Nova, really sorry to hear about the camera. What's the situation with the tapes now? I worked with mini DV tapes as part of my video editing course & I'd be happy to offer some advice if it's needed. There's more than one way to skin a gundark after all.  ;)

If you have any good thinking on how to buy an (inexpensive) device that can simply PLAY the DV tapes and "act" as a camcorder so that I can import footage from said DV tapes onto my machine... I'm all ears.  :)

Thus far, I've found that they are almost as complicated as getting some el cheapo DV cam... and uploading from there.

MOSTLY, this will not affect the combat DVDs... as I have most of the footage on my machine already.  Thing is... I have a throng of DV tapes from OTHER events / things / goings ons that are just sitting around waiting to be uploaded, edited, and all that.  For example, believe it or not but I still have a junkload of LoopKicks 2009 camp footage that I never got to editing.  Never enough time.  Not to mention all the artwork / paintings and lots of other stuff from France @ The Louvre, etc. ...

So... yah--maybe PM me with that, it couldn't hurt!!  :D  Much oblige in advance!!!

There is no current *cheap* wat to import Mini DV footage to a PC without a camcorder/deck (just a s expensive as a camcorder...

However.

Many camera stores will rent out camcorders for as low as $20 a day. You might want to chack that route....

<--- has been testing new editing software in preparation for whatever it is I end up with regarding an HD cam...

Which means no more OLD SCHOOL Windows Movie Maker editing.  Yay!  Although it's not as if it didn't "do the job" for my simple purposes in the past... especially when the highest I could film in was 640 x 480 or 720 x 480 anyhow.  So really... what difference would it have made other than extra filters and such with the video in other software?  :)

So far, I'm liking what I see though!!  :)

Sorry for the double-post, but I figured this would be a good question to pose to the general folks out there...

What video STANDARD DEF FILE format would you most prefer to see?  .AVI ... .MPG ... .WMV ... .something_else?

I can't be certain or not at this point if we'll have the ability, space and organization & structure to support things in *multiple formats*... that may actually be out of our scope.

And it gives rise to an additional concern, which is: in order to make this "most accessible" to people out there, we're aiming to AVOID making this a "DVD that you stick in your DVD player attached to your TV".  We would prefer to do it as a DVD you pop into your COMPUTER... and then you can access each individual file / tutorial as you see fit, and not have to slog through a clumsy DVD menu.

Anyhow, I'm thinking H.264 standard all the way (double rainbow... all dah way!!)  lol... what do you guys think?

A computer route sounds  fine. There are many freeware converter programs available so if one wan't a ffferent format they can simply convert it.
Title: Re: Novastar and Caine's Staged Combat System (1st Complete System!)

MPEG would be best for quality and the easiest for someone to make into a TV DVD  a lot of DVD player will even play that format. I would not use the windows format .wmv as some people use other operating systems like LINUX and those files can be a pain to play on the other systems. AVI would be my second choice as there are many free converters out there to create a movie DVD from the AVI files. be sure not to use an uncommon compression format as it would also make some systems unstable.

Just some of my experience from finding fanfic movies and converting them to DVD's to watch. I learned that MPEG was the highest quality to make movie DVD's out of as long as there was not heavy compression on the files. Compression will destroy the quality of the picture so don't go real heavy on the compression.

Also don't use the Ipod format (MP4 i think) as its sound compression will not decompress into a DVD with the free converters I've found and the movies will become silent films

Using open standards would also be a good idea as using patented or proprietary  will also limit the system that can play the files.

We should just include a DL link to the free online AVS video converter. That is what I did with my 7 Forms of Combat DVD. The default files I used were .wmv, and in some cases .avi.
Title: Re: Novastar and Caine's Staged Combat System (1st Complete System!)
Post by: Novastar on March 15, 2011, 04:12:35 PM
Good point about the converter link, Caine.  After all... it's not like we have the ability to include EVERY format for every system...

@Kentai... I think you're right that mpeg is a pretty good format, but I was going a bit deeper and saying that I was thinking of using the "H.264" codec, primarily because it is now fairly standard in the industry.  Additionally, I'll want to use the "AVC" type of H.264 Mpeg codec, which stands for "advanced video compression", and is simply a better/improved version of the original H.264 codec.

As to what you're saying about compression--it is unavoidable.  However... the entire point of the H.264-AVC codec SEEMS to be that you can get similar video qualities to most of the other codecs out there... but at bitrates that are much lower (say by 45% lower)... and therefore the filesize can remain lower while still not sacrificing too much quality.

In addition to THAT... our cams did not / do not produce super HQ video anyhow--although I would easily say that Caine's cam was definitely better than mine, as his was newer (and was all digital--sd cards), whereas mine was from 2006/2007... and all about mini-DV tapes.

Finally, I'll use the fairly standard and common audio format of MP3... and again, mpeg codec on that one.

.
.
.

At least... that's the PLAN... which came of some decent research (albeit research I DIDN'T want to do, lol)
...unless enough people scream at me and tell me how horrible & bad of a mistake that would be, heheh... :)

.... ...."You're doing it wrong..."  hahahahahahahah lol

I strongly agree with the choice of H.264, it's in common use for HD anime fansubs and is easy to play with very little overhead on most systems.

Thanks, Drazhar!  It's good to get a little verification of such things... especially because I am *NOT* a bigshot movie editor guy.  But I do what I can with what I have... and (of late) have been trying to learn more and work with BETTER tools than the super-basic Windows Movie Maker.  Which I'm glad about... I think I found the right software (for ME) that is in-between professional and "Bob wants to do a slideshow"... :)

WHICH brings me to an announcement of sorts...

TENTATIVELY, Caine and I will do our very very best to release NCSCS DVD#1 on 5/4/2011!   ;D

We don't know what the price will be yet...
We don't know exactly where & how it will be released yet...
We don't know if it will start off as "a DVD in a sleeve with L-Scribing" or actually be in a box with cover art...

...but it's COMIN'.  Basically... I don't want the project to "fall behind" any longer than it needs to.

That's all for now, except I'll re-iterate:

* SABER BASICS: Spin examplers, numbering system, drills, staff examplers and actions as well!
* COMBAT ACTIONS: Explanation of notation for writing choreo..., footwork, jumping attacks, inverted attacks, etc.
* MARTIAL ARTS BASICS: Kicks, Punches... and even ways to apply those in choreography correctly for viewers
* TRICKING BASICS: B-Kick, Pop Cres, etc.
* COMBAT FORMS (including "Form 0", which is a saber spin form)
* SPECIAL EXTRAS: Mythbusting, Sparring Drills, and also "written work" that helps you with the notation of forms we've already written, and should help YOU to write your own forms / choreography as well!

Hopefully, when the entire set can get out there, folks will fully understand what we're trying to do with this project, too.  :)

Happy to be of service Novastar!

I'm a bit of a tech buff and I LOVE streaming HD, even Blu-Ray rips are done in H.264 at this point, making it a FINE choice.

I won't get into the legality of any such matters though.

Is it safe to assume that whatever format you decide on could be converted to AVI? My entertainment network is very AVI orientated & most of my hardware is specifically geared toward it. Any AVI file I store on my desktop I can then stream it to my Xbox360 or transfer to my gf's laptop when the weather improves enough to go outside.

As far as I know... even though the codec is technically an "MPEG" one--it's ending up as an AVI on my end when I render/produce the completed project file.  So the short answer is... yes, 95% sure we'll be releasing in .AVI... even though it's technically the H.264 codec.  :)

True, but sometimes it's all about knowing the "details".  For example, if you convert video format X into video format Y... and your frame rates and resolution/aspect ratios are all wrong--it's going to look HORRIBLE.

In this case too... since Caine and I don't exactly have 8000 dollar cams... the "quality" results are just standard SD from the get-go.  THEN of course *I* must compress that video during the editing process... and anything after that could be pretty "degraded".

But good points overall.  If people simply CANNOT find a way to view a .avi or .mpg with the H.264 codec (and do not have .mp3 codecs)... converting IS an option.  :)

Folks, we are SOOOOOO excited about this release!  :D

I however, need to give credit where credit is due. Nova has been working EXTREMELY hard to get this done, with all the research on video editors, organization and general planning on this project. In essence, my partner ROCKS!

I have been out of things for awhile due to my martial art's school's sudden surge of business and a plethora of new clients! Although this is a great thing and so grateful for it, it leaves me little time for anything else besides family time...and as a lot of you know my wife and I are expecting a 2nd child in Sept...so Caine=busy, bust, BUSY!!

I am still around, just not as much...but I very much look forward to you folks FINALLY getting your hands on this release.

I hear you, I'm learning how to edit, an it is nothing short of painstaking. It's fun, but definitely painstaking.

I meant more with respect of having someone to spar/learn/make videos with. You guys seem to be able to meet somewhat consistently. I have friends that are so busy I don't get to see them for months at a time.
Title: Re: Novastar and Caine's Staged Combat System (1st Complete System!)

You are right on the money with "not being able to meet"... I mean when I think back to the BOP I days--it was tough.  Then BOP II... even tougher.  Rehearsals for the early makings of BOP III?!??  Well, that got jacked of course...

Then, for some time, Brian (Gundamaniac) was learning a little of the numbering system, but that didn't last--everyone gets super busy!!!

And now... in less than 6 months I do not think Caine and I will be able to meet more than once EVERY FEW WEEKS!!  :(

The only chance at saber practice (for me) will be @ GGK, and even though I'm really really enjoying that... everyone is so new to all things saber (ok, more like sparring, choreo/staged combat + high speed + spins)... I won't improve unless I find a different way.  :)

For now... I'll be going back to Tricking on Wednesdays + learning a hand combo/form + probably trying to build my own "solo saber form" and just do those things a zillion times.  Not much choice on it!  But it should all be fun...

I don't want to open a poll for this... but... curious as to who is interested in purchasing the NCSCS (Nova & Caine's Saber Combat System) DVDs for:

A) Staged combat... i.e. they want to do fight scenes as performances for friends, family, schools, events, etc.
B) Just plain personal growth / exercise
C) Sparring... i.e. you don't care to do any fight scenes or events... you just want to spar/bout with opponents using protective gear and want to improve.
D) Something else?  Do tell?
E) All of the above...

Feel free to extrapolate, because... we'd like to know WHY you'd want to utilize the work we've put into this little "system" of ours!  :)

It will also help me to get new ideas for what ELSE to show on the DVDs.

I'm actually looking for this information to work on sabers with a girl I know from church who's almost as big of a SW geek as me. She love's the saber and was trying to figure out the seven forms from my copy of the Jedi Path. So I started looking for info on the different forms and stumbled onto this forum and love all the info here. While waiting on this "system" to come out I've already got the Bandit-Jedi Saber Spin DVD and ordered the 7 forms of the Old Jedi Order (still waiting on this one but just ordered it on the 15th) If your "system" is half as detailed as the Saber Spin DVD is then it will be a success.

We are more into wanting to learn forms then actually dueling, but all the knowledge we can get will be a benefit to what we want to do.

E for me too. I attend about 3-6 conventions every year & love to cosplay. I'm currently working on a custom Sith costume & plan to develop a custom Jedi costume later this year. It sounds like it will be good exercise physically & mentally, both of which I believe I could benefit from. My better half attends a lot of conventions with me & has also been bitten by the cosplay bug. Since the first custom saber I made was a gift for her I thought this was something we could enjoy as a couple. It would allow us to practice & spar as well as put on random displays at conventions together.

Thanks Kental... Midian... Jamo... Infernis!!!  :)

Keep it coming, guys!!  I mean seriously... I LIKE INPUT.

I'm pretty excited too, because... since I'm doing 90% of the editing here, it's looking really nice from my perspective.  :)  I really can barely even WAIT to "unleash" the overall system that will (hopefully?) make a lot of sense to people--especially if they are understanding this perspective:

"I'd like to improve on many levels... and I recognize that it takes YEARS to get good at most anything--saber combat/martial arts being no exception."

And finally, I'd love to see our system being generally adopted as some "excellent standards" for terminology, overall communication for targeting and expression of moves to others, and all that jazz.  :)

You'll see.  Tons of fun in store... and throngs of learning too.  For myself as well!

I just can't believe it's been almost a year since this whole thing was conceptualized. And many Thursdays and Fridays of Nova and I meeting....sabers breaking....camera's either jacking up or batteries dying....injuries (not saber related, tho) and other DRL stuff.  :o

Folks, this system is certainly a labor of love...but we feel you're gonna LOVE IT as much as us.

So THAT'S why I wake up all "out of it" on Friday evenings, next to an empty whiskey bottle, laid out in cities I never remember driving to...

...and then there's always some chick named "Helen" leaving messages on my phone saying: "Good times, good times!!  Don't forget--you gotta return that skirt when you're done with it... see you & Caine next week..."

I'm like... ... (?).... (!!!??!?!?!)  wtf...?

UPDATE:

Things are going pretty AWESOMELY with the video editing!  As I probably mentioned before... no more Windows Movie Maker, I'm using a much more advanced video editor, and I have a LOT more control over it (even though there was/is the learning curve).  There are still bugs / limited crashes with it... but they are rare issues.

Color correction has been a bit maddening, as we've had:

* 2 Cameras in usage (each quite different in the image quality--I think Caine's is better, so I'm glad ~my~ cam finally broke, hahahah!!)
* 3 Facility / Lighting situations
* 1 or 2 odd circumstances that made matching things up a bit tough...

...but overall, if I just put the work in, the video from both cams and all lighting situations looks good.

Additionally, I've had a lot of issues with cropping things to fit, as I'm trying to go 720 x 480 (my cam rendered that), but Caine's cam is 640 x 480.

Overall though... everything is looking MUCH MORE FANTASTIC than I first imagined, and the only thing I *WISH* we could have done... was film everything in HD.  But either way I slice it (broken cam now or not)... I could not have afforded an HD cam back when we started... nor can I really afford it *right* now...

...but it'll come in due time after NCSCS Part 1 is released, come May 4th!

Yes, there IS a light at the end of the tunnel!  :D  And it's as bright as Nova's mutant Lux V!

Nova is doing an outstanding job at the editing, and folks I assure you this is going to be a top notch product. Everything about it certainly is cutting edge, and although CD 1 is going to be considered somewhat "basic" it's going to help all saberplayers improve their game, no matter what level of experience of martial arts, fencing, stage combat, etc. experience they have.

Keep those comment's comin'!

There is actually a LOT of "advanced" stuff now that I'm seeing the overall picture with the editing!  :)  I mean, initially... both Caine and I were thinking, "Hmm... might be 'overly' basic, but... gotta start at the beginning"...

But when we get down to all the drills... extras... tricking... and even certain combat actions--they aren't "easy" by any means.  It will take some solid work for people to get a lot of this stuff done, practiced, mastered, etc.

I'm ESPECIALLY excited about a particular saber disarm we're showing--the footage not only looks *AWESOME*... it's about as practical (if it could be) a move as it can get for such an action.  Happens in about 1 to 2 units of time, so... it's about as close as you can get to a "realistic" disarm...

Not to mention our "Mythbusting" video.  God, it's hilarious.  And only more to come as more CDs / DVDs get released... +HD for future ones, most likely...

Actually... d'ohh! ... to be honest, I've been scrambling so hard to edit everything... we haven't even discussed it!!!

Uh... I guess we better do that, lol.

Oh...

And... if at any time, we come off as TOO slick or TOO organized... let us know.  lol   ;D    :D

EDIT:

* Absolutely going to be a LightScribed DVD now!!  :)  Yay!  Not enough room on a CD anyhow, so... the decision was easy!!
* DVD Cover is looking FANTABULOUS!!  :)  Special thanks to Yoda for pretty much doing the front cover photo work!
* BECAUSE it's now a DVD media we're working off of... if I have time (not sure yet!!)... I'm going to try making this thing compatible as a "play it on your TV/DVD player" ~AND~ on your computer.  :)  We'll see...
* Caine and I will finally get a chance to meet tomorrow and NOT have to continue filming!!  This time, we can discuss the price, and keep everything moving along
* Video quality is looking pretty good with the AVC (advanced video compression) mpeg-style codec.  Actual file format is .AVI ... but that may not matter if you can't view such files, since I MIGHT try to make a DVD menu.  Again--we'll see.  Question of time now...

Well... I'm pretty excited about it... and busting my *BUUUMMMMMM* to get it all done in time!!  And Caine already grabbed up the DVDs & Cases we needed + bubble mailers to get them out to you guys... so we're in good standing to make the deadline fairly well.  :)

5/4/2011 is comin'... and that right SOON though!!!   ;D

Release teaser

SUPER BIG EDIT = Cleaned all this stuff up, big time!  :)  Lots has been going on... pardon the proverbial "dust"...
NOTE = Please note that I am starting to use "https", which helps you browse more securely--on ANY site if it's supported...

NCSCS
Novastar & Caine's Saber Combat System

Release announcement video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HqduT_1eDiI

OVER **90 MINUTES** OF INSTRUCTIONAL CONTENT!!

* Saber Spins
* Staged Combat
* Saber Combat Forms
* Saber Sparring
* Footwork & Saber Drills
* Basic Martial Arts
* Basic "Tricking"
* MYTHBUSTING (!!)
* Special Extras

DEEZ EEZ NUTTZZZZ!!! There is over *NINETY* minutes of video content as tutorials, forms, instructional walkthroughs, demonstrations, examplers... all with some crazy awesome LED saber props!  In actuality, there will be more like 121+ minutes of video due to credits/"outros" and all that... but I don't count that toward the actual examplers, tutorials, etc.  This all adds up to say... I'll be burning at LEAST 3GB of data on these suckers, hahaha!  I just hope I don't go over the ~4gb that a DVD can store...

Brought to you (of course) by your friendly, neighborhood Novastar and the ever powerful & crafty Caine...

--"NovaCaine"

WEBSITE:
http://www.sabercombat.com ... will be the eventual "home" for NCSCS stuff... but it may simply direct us all toward a more dynamic and "social network driven" setup of webpages and tools:

FACEBOOK
https://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=group_207717372582367

...which will eventually (hopefully) begin to "tie together" the saber combat communities all over the world, and attempt to unite saber combat / staged combat folks under a singular (YET CREATIVE & OPEN) system that truly works!

I cannot fully explain why our system (especially the notation aspects) is "worthy" of being a more definitive system vs. everyone just "doing whatever / their own thing"... but soon enough, you'll all find out.  Well... if you're interested in saber combat / choreography / dueling...  :)

If not, no worries... this ain't the thing for you!

and remember that do or do not, there is no try :D

And Novastar and Caine here certainly do/did :)
Good to see it is, this type of proper dueling and targeting system in place and finally in
a format that will be both informative and entertaining  :)

Since the primary targeting system being taught is based on the very same principals
of fencing, stage and theatrical combat that you see in person it helps make your duels
and combat moves more 360 than the view from a camera.  8)

Or in a nut shell it adds to the realism for your audience ;)

Also... slight update... the first "batch" of the DVDs will be going out en masse/together... so if you ordered on 5/4 and are wondering what the heck is going on (although I e-mailed everyone I think)... they should ship tomorrow or the next day!

I'm excited even "moreso" than normal with a product too, because... these have the fun DVD photo & artwork on the box and all that!  :)

Much thanks (btw) to Yoda for doing the front cover part of the DVD artwork/graphic/photo... and don't forget to watch the credits portion in the videos at LEAST once through, guys!!  :)  It really does offer our gratitude and appreciation to everyone who was involved in helping to make project 100% complete...

Now that the first batch of orders are out....

FEEDBACK IS APPRECIATED!

Constructive criticism is welcomed as long as it stays positive. If we can improve future volume DVD's some way, we would like to know. We just don't want to hear things like "I already know the spins" or "I already know how to swing a saber" or "I already know how to do Form 3 cuz I studied Soresu with another group and it's similar" and so on. Maybe things like, "I'd like to know how this "A" application and that "B" application applies to how "C and "D" can work together....or "I want to see more of <insert technique(s) here>" or "Caine, you need to wear a Lady Gaga shirt and grow a goatee and Nova needs to grow his long hair and beard again for the next vids" or something along those lines.  ;)

Thanks everyone! Keep saberplaying!

For anyone who has purchased, we have a section on Facebook for reviews now...

These days, it's hard to know where to "put stuff" (for example, online here @ FX or on a webpage or on another site, etc.)... but I guess we'll try "migrating" everything to Facebook with the NCSCS stuff just to see how it goes.

Additionally, since NCSCS is indeed meant to be more "interactive" vs. some of my other things (like the Sound CDs)... it makes sense to get a consistent flow of feedback and general "goings on" with people on dynamic places such as Facebook for this kind of thing.

Caine and I hope to see (in the future):

* People's OWN video of things like Form 0, Form I, Form II, Form III, Form IV, etc.
* People's interpretation of certain fight scenes using the NCSCS notation (for future use to ALL folks out there)
* Reviews of NCSCS (DVD1 only, at this present time)
* Requests for any of the above from other members, or even Caine & myself

Hope that all makes sense!

Thanks again, Erv!  Much appreciation on the time & effort it took to work in the garden clips + the "WIB?" vocals & clip, heheheh...

I only hope that DVD#2 will get completed in a timely fashion and that people will begin to TRULY see "where it's going"... since DVD1... is really just the most basic stuff in my opinion.  With maybe a few exceptions, although none are really coming to mind... :)

=> "just the basic stuff" for you equal "just smd soldering" for me  ;D

which means => that DVD & those videos are MUCH more important that what you'd think ! especially showing things on various angles, slow down, and even fail.

*thumbs up*

filming / editing : as usual no much time, I filmed that at work on my spare time, and stupidly no good mike to record things, so I just "crafted" the vocals with a hammer and a chisel  :D

No time yet to really start with AVS but I'm going to leave Movie Maker soon anyway as I'm tired of the audio support (single audio track)

Really?!?!  Hmmm... ok, well if so... point well taken, heheh.  I didn't imagine that even smd soldering was STILL "basic" for you... I just thought it was a skill you built up over time, and NOW it's like 2nd nature.  But yet... it's still "advanced", heheh...

Thanks again to everyone who is supporting Mark & my work by purchasing!  It's been overwhelming so far, but I'm REALLY glad about that!

Just as a general note... some guest assistants from GGK (and hopefully Mark/Caine's WCH MA school!) will be helping to demonstrate for DVD#2.

Keep those reviews COMING, too!  Best place for them is on our Facebook page, under the "docs" section, so we can really allow people to see what those who have purchased & studied NCSCS DVD#1 have to say...

I'm also excited about "re-opening the research" on the type of camera to purchase (not that I can AFFORD it, lol)... but... yeah... my old one is just not good for this stuff anymore, and I'd rather just "go digital HD" with it and never look back... ya know?  I only hope everything will bloody well FIT on the upcoming DVDs...  :)

I got a nice full HD "pocket size" camera for about $350. However, an actual camcorder might be required in your case just to get the wide angle lens you already use working on the new camera.
Title: Re: Novastar and Caine's Saber Combat System "NCSCS" (1st COMPLETE System!)
Post by: Novastar on July 11, 2011, 04:46:20 PM
Excellent performance in low light is actually VERY tough to find, unfortunately.  :(

Otherwise, I'd just get a "GoPro" or whatever they are... for... yup, agreed--$350 or what not.

Unfortunately, the price range I have to look at is usually in the $650 to $800 (or more) range... which SOUNDS "wrong", but believe me, it makes a difference in the quality.  That all being said... cameras are improving every day and prices come down.  So, I can only hope I find the "right" time to buy.

At this point... I'm praying for cameras to go all "aggro" and berserk with their bad selves this summer, lol.  :)  I mean if there is some kind of "summer frenzy" for cams... maybe I can swing an older model with GORGEOUS low-light performance in the pro-sumer range and make it last for the next 5 years...

Finally chose the new cam... :)

TOOK ME LONG ENOUGH, huh?!?  Well, the good thing is--Mark (Caine) has some "Tablet" cam too, so... that is something!

But this one?  Canon Vixia HF M40

My other choice was simply out-of-the-budget (Panasonic HDC-TM900K)... and quite frankly... uh... so was THIS CAM TOO, lol.  Needless to say--most everything for DVD#2 will now be in HD Video... if not all of it, if we re-shoot a few things.  Hard to say if it will be "100%" HD though... :)

Release target date goal again is... ... ... ... yes... you guessed it.  :)

hahahah NO WAY on 2011!!  :)  I'd NEVER have enough time to (takes a DEEEEP BREATH):

* arrange guest artist music
* do DVD case artwork / photos
* print artwork
* film all sessions with Caine (who is EXCESSIVELY unavailable these days due to many reasons!!)
* assess all film sessions... check to see if re-shoots need to occur
* check to see if "mixing HD with SD" vids will "work", or if it will look screwed up
* organize, edit, annotate, "title it up", render and check vids
* make sure it fits onto a single DVD (or... I'd have to go "it's DVD2 + DVD3"... which MIGHT happen)
* make a new credits reel
* make a new intro(??) and outro(??)
* make a new Lightscribe cover (??), or stick with generally same one (who knows)
* complete & finalize notation for upcoming combat forms (I actually still need to do a lot of thinking on these--I may even go as far as "replacing" forms 3 & 4, since... I think that may have been 'too much' for people to utilize as drills, etc.)
* burn, burn, burn... lightscribe, lightscribe, lightscribe... then pack, ship... :)

All that being said... maybe it will get done by 5/4/2012!!  :)  I certainly hope so.  Just a bummer to be doin' all this somewhat "alone" again, heheh.  But that's the way it goes, fo shoooooowwwww, sooooooooollllllooowwwww!!!   ;D

Hey, Keil!

Having personally worked with Novastar as a member of the Golden Gate Knights I can tell you that you should buy the NCSCS dvd if you really want to learn how to use your saber to construct realistic fight choreography.  I own a copy of the dvd and while I haven't watched every tutorial multiple times, my only excuse is pretty good: I get to take instruction from the man himself.  However, as per your request, a brief synopsis:

1.  You will learn basic footwork, a crucial, basic component missing from many fan films.

2.  You will learn the basic attacks from 1-10.

3.  All kinds of other stuff that I cannot specify because Novastar would chastise me for revealing too much about the product!  ;-)

Check out this YouTube video for more details: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwWCRkuI8vE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwWCRkuI8vE)

Just for fun, here's the first piece of choreography that we worked on together, built up over the course of just an hour and a half of class time, once a week since February of this year:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FzOmglZ4ybA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FzOmglZ4ybA)

Ack!  Sorry I missed the latest posts... things were busy, I suppose.

Yeah... I apologize that there isn't a "direct" synopsis of things yet... there is/was(!) supposed to be some website work going on at sabercombat.com (our NCSCS site, basically), but it hasn't happened.  It's something *I* personally cannot do + do not have the time, sadly.

What I CAN do for future folks is the following:

* Cut & paste what's on the back of the DVD box!  :)
* Link people to the announcement video (which has details in the description portion of the video)
* Edit the initial thread to reflect the above...

So... here ya go:

"Open your mind to an entirely new way to approach saber dueling:  with technology, style, technique... and a simple notational system that  will  revolutionize  writing complex fight choreography  for  demos, events, films… or even just for fun with your closest  friends and co-workers!  Experience NCSCS!  Novastar & Caine’s complete  Saber Combat System!!"

I'm curious as to what people understood/enjoyed about DVD1...

Also... keep in mind that DVD2 will be pretty much all HD (if not TOTALLY HD), and will build upon most everything you saw on DVD1.  That's the goal--to use the DVDs as a means to going from "basic" level... to advanced... to expert, depending on how much you're able to practice, with whom (or if alone), etc.

Additionally, I'll be unleashing the sort of "Saber Sparring System" I've been brewing over for the past year or so.  Not to say that people can't do their OWN thing, but... I've covered a LOT of bases with this thing, and... it ought to serve people well for having some general guidelines for sparring to both keep it FUN... and to keep it safe & fair.

Finally... your input?   ;D What kinds of actions would YOU like to see on future DVDs?  I mean, we're covering most every category on the DVDs; again those are:

* Saber Spins (again, we touch on this + identify them--otherwise, for tutorials, get Banditcar's awesome spin tutorials!)
* Saber Basics (these vary, but sometimes cover things like finding the balance of a saber, etc.)
* Combat Forms (as you guys know, our forms are meant to be "paired"... BUT... can be performed "singularly" as well)
* Notation (DVD1 mostly has documents about this, but... you start to see the idea of WRITING THIS STUFF DOWN... in an intelligent/efficient manner)
* Advanced Actions (inverted moves, spinning moves, jumping moves... this sort of thing)
* Drills (both for staged combat AND for actual sparring / "real-time" bouting)
* Basic Martial Arts (basic kicks)
* Basic "Tricking" (which could be considered somewhat advanced MA)
* "Mythbusting" (just for fun!   :) But also to debunk stupid, non-realistic actions--ones that can only "work" in the MOVIES)
* Extras

Btw... we'll start getting into "camera angles" and "audience perspectives" on DVD2.  I left that off of DVD1 since I thought it would have been too much to start thinking about for people trying to grasp so much all at once...

So... are we MISSING anything?  I'm certain you guys could think of something else?  If not... then... GREAT!!  We've got like 98% of the things you could do/want in the "saber fighting world" covered...
Title: Re: Novastar and Caine's Saber Combat System "NCSCS" (1st COMPLETE System!)

Ack... I'm such an IDIOT for not posting a few updates regarding NCSCS and DVD2, etc. here... so... here I goes!!

* I used the NCSCS notational system to begin approaching the notation of the canon SW fights...
* It works FANTASTICALLY!  I can notate / express nearly EVERY move I've seen, and it's really... uh... pretty easy!
* Completed:
EP IV -- OWK v DV
   EP V -- LS v DV
   EP VI -- LS v DV (#2, I guess)
   EP I -- OWK + QGJ v DM

* Mostly Completed:
EP III -- OWK v AS (or DV, depends on how you look at it, lol)

I don't yet know if we'll include ALL of these notational documents into NCSCS DVD#2... but you can bet yer favorite LED that SOME of them will indeed be on there!  :)

I'll continue to work on notation as I see fit... although... I *WAS* kinda hoping others would eventually attempt it.  Granted... yeah... if you don't really REALLY grasp the idea of using the way the NCSCS notation works... and if you don't have mastery of the basic targets/numbers... it's going to be about 5x more difficult to notate a fight.

Further, it's almost a "better"(?) experiment for people to create their OWN fight sequence, and then use the system to notate it.  From there, they can attempt other projects and small fight scenes... and go from there.

Anyhow... I'm actually more excited about this than I originally thought, since... umm... I thought it was going to be REALLY tough to try to notate "filmed sequences" into a more "live" way of looking at things.  I was wrong.  HAPPILY wrong!  :)

Well... maybe not "right here"... I'll probably put some of 'em on DVD#2, heheh.  The rest... IDK... DVD#3?  Not sure.

Additionally, I STILL need to:

* "Leave them be" for a bit, then come back to them and double-check... triple-check... that I didn't miss anything or that I couldn't be "more accurate" with one move or another
* Decide if I "properly" or "acceptably" chose who the designated Attacker & Defender was... and if I didn't--fix that up
* Test most of those out with GGK and/or myself + someone & film a little... just to be sure that certain sections at least SOMEWHAT look similar to what was seen in the films

That all being said--I'm fairly sure there won't be any GLARING issues or "giant holes" with things.

UPDATES:

* Filmed a good amount of stuff with Alain Bloch ("Deacon Frost", I guess he finally chose a name to go by, heheh!) from GGK for DVD2...
* Filming on Friday with Caine... lookin' fwd to that!
* Looked over some of what I had notation-wise for the SW fight stuff... EP IV... EP V... EP VI... EP I...
* Also...

....WOOT!!!  :)

EP III Choreo = DONE!  :)

Again... wasn't TOO hard with the NCSCS notation... but still.  With all the lava + swinging on the cables + transitional editing due to going from "this scene to that scene"... it made it pretty bloody awkward at times.

Compile that with all the camera angles changing every 3 seconds, and... you have yourself a veritable nightmare trying to keep it all straight...

Worst thing about "translating" AIN'T "the moves"... it's having the actions OBSTRUCTED by... you know... CGI... cam angle... actor bodies... depth perception loss, etc.

Zounds, what a ton of work.  I may wait a while before going on to the Ep II & EP III OWK + AS v CD (or Darth Tyranus or whatever), lol.

But after that... yeah... pretty much DONE.  :)

Just to let folks know... I've been *REALLY* working on a sparring system here behind-the-scenes as well.  Which is pretty detailed, if I do say so myself.

I'm simply calling it: "The League of Saber Warriors" (LSW)
If you are a part of it, you'd be considered a "Titan of Light", heheheh.  These terms will give it the distinction over other people's systems.

It covers just about anything you could imagine (not kidding)... and even things I'm willing to bet you DIDN'T imagine!  :)  In fact, I'm also "aiming to the future" with it, so that most any possible attempts to "abuse the system"... will be blocked before they can rear their ugly heads, lol...

At any rate... um... I'm planning on adding this in to NCSCS DVD#2.  Does anyone have anything to say about this?  Is that "lame", or... is it a good idea, or... should it "stand alone"?  I don't know.

Personally, I think it makes sense to do it with NCSCS, as... I'll probably want to release a few videos along with the actual document files in order to give some real-time examplers of what you would do, say, etc. in the case of X or Y or Z.  And additionally... that's what NCSCS is supposed to be about--a complete system for choreography, sparring techniques, and basic martial arts.

Thoughts welcomed.

I say it sounds like an awesome idea Nova! Basically, the more added to the DVDs the better ;) or if it's too big to fit on or you do think it should be stand alone, maybe both on separate discs but as a set for number 2 at a higher cost? You could call it the special edition :p

Sounds like a good idea though man, looking forward to it! Keep up the brilliant work.

Dave.

Nah, it won't increase the cost, heheh!  And the DOCUMENTS themselves won't cause any space issues... but the extra videos might--we'll have to see.

Additionally, since we're filming in HD now... it might make the videos bigger.  That is to say... what was (example) 113.8MB before (~5 min. video)... may now be double that.  I don't really know yet, as I haven't fully checked.

That being said... I just looked at a video on my desktop (a tricking video project), which is:

* 5:40 min. long (hey!  540!!!  SWEET!!)
* 6652 Kbps for overall bit rate
* 1920 x 1080 (HD, duh)
* It is indeed "rendered", and not the original "raw" video
* Frame rate is 30fps

...it's 270mb.  So... yeah... I suppose I guessed right.

THAT all being said... I THINK I can get everything onto one DVD.  At least... uh... I HOPE I can.  :)

If not, big whoop, I can release the LSW separately.
Title: Re: Novastar and Caine's Saber Combat System "NCSCS" (1st COMPLETE System!)
Post by: Novastar on November 07, 2011, 12:27:52 PM
Well... a lot has happened (as many of you know) since I last posted, but...

Still moving forward with NCSCS DVD#2!  :)  More filming to happen soon, actually.  Also... as I keep looking at notational systems and x-reffing them vs. this fight scene & that fight scene, etc. etc. ... each passing day shows that the NCSCS notation... REALLY WORKS!  Especially for all "sword type" combat fights, multiple opponents, even when they wield saber staff or dual sabers, and even when a lot of fairly complicated actions are being performed/seen in the fight.

Also, I can't tell you how excited I have been to see that the system has been SO useful in essentially "capturing" / expressing the SW fights (thus far).  Even what I thought would be the most difficult fight (EP III, Obi-Ani)... ended up being relatively easy to notate.  Well... not in the sense of the TIME INVOLVED in notating it... but in the sense that I didn't see like 20-40 moves where I was saying to myself: "Hmm... how do I explain THAT with the system?!?"

Anyhow... still... before any of those notations get released, I'll at least be wanting to "proofread my work" at least once more (it will be a triple-check in this case), and then also look to people like Caine (Mark), Alain Bloch, & David Simmons to have a look and basically see if THEY would notate 90% of the fight "the same way".  And if so... it's even further verification that the system can (more easily) help people to learn staged combat + SW fights if they wish!

I've mentioned this before too, but... I'm even planning to attempt notating at least SOME of "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon"... just to see if I can do it with such varied arsenals!  :)  I think I'll run into problems, though, when Michelle Yeoh's character changes to some of the more 3-sectional staves or chain whips, etc., lol.  :)

Anyhow.

Thanks again for all of your support on this, folks!

CAN'T BELIEVE IT!!! ... nearly all the editing is done at this point!  :)  At least... the main portion of everything, but certainly not counting the 2 to 4 vids that have not yet been filmed (duh).  Even though I'm not complete with my editing work... we're ALREADY at ~93 minutes of actual instruction (and no, I am not counting the credits reels--just as I didn't with DVD#1).

That said... HD footy is ~much~ more of a data space hog than its SD counterpart.  That probably goes without saying...

But this means that SOME content... will indeed be going onto the website as DL-able content.

That is actually GOOD news for Mark & myself, since... attempting to "make back" the time, preparation, logistical, filming, materials, design and planning costs for the entire NCSCS endeavor... is quite literally an experiment in *INSANITY*, heheheh... :)

MY advice to anyone wanting to do this kind of thing "on their own" (as in one or two people)?  Don't.  lol... Seriously.

But... I'm pretty glad things are moving forward!  :)  I'm excited to see if NCSCS will help change "plain ol' SW fan groups" who simply have nice costumes, some sabers, and delusions of grandeur... into folks with the tools / training drills that can lead to some real staged combat expertise.

It will take time, but... no one said being a "Jedi" would be easy!  :)

So... when our site is up and running, don't forget to come SUPPORT THE DOWNLOADABLE CONTENT TOO!  :)

I believe what we'll continue to do... is update the site with fresh content as the weeks & months pass, too.  Good stuff!

All I can say is... I'm VERY glad for your work "on your end of the map" as well, Bazzard!  :)  Caine told me that you put a lot of work into what you've been working on, and that is a great thing.  We should find some time to chat online, on the phone, etc. if possible.

I also think it's only a matter of time now before we're all sort of going to be able to "unite East & West" in some kind of national saber camp!  :)

Granted... it's essentially what I've been hoping for with the "SaberStar Summer Camp" idea, but... it's not like I care what name it goes by, how it gets run or how it gets done.  I just forsee... national camps comin' soon!!!  It happened with Tricking... why not with LED sabers?  :)

It BETTER happen!!  heheheh.  Otherwise I'll release a "Greedo shot first" video, and that'll be the end of it... ..... O.O

Well... despite all the roadblocks on getting a PROPER website going on (since 2011 when we launched DVD#1)... I finally couldn't allocate/delegate that anymore to folks who couldn't follow through...

Sooooo...

http://www.sabercombat.com

Now live!  :)

Obviously, a lot more stuff for the site will be coming down the road, but... until DVD#2 launches, I really don't know how much more flamethrowers I can juggle, heheheh...  :)

I hear you!  :)

I mean... it may come of some surprise to folks, but... I myself rarely get to "enjoy what I've edited" until I've actually LAUNCHED the bloody project(s), heheheh!  Same went for the Sound Compendium CDs back in 2007/2008/2009, etc. -- was hard to look at it from a few steps back until I could sit back for a few moments and BREATHE.  Probably much like what VV & Saberfont.com is going through.

Anyhow... I can quickly say that I REALLY like what is coming on DVD2.  It's a giant, giant step forward from DVD#1 (for those who have it), so... if you already enjoyed + learned from DVD1... there's no other way to say it, it'd be impossible for you to dislike DVD2.

I also personally cannot wait to get the DL-able content going!  :)  I'm actually quite eager to delve into some of the general basics of film editing (and I'm not talking about "special effects" and fancy graphics--I'm talking about HOW TO EDIT IN A CONTIGUOUS MANNER).  I mean, when you get down to it:

* Even if you do a fight 100% live...
* Even if you do a fight "filmed" but all in one take...
* Even if you have "ideal" camera equipment, gear, lighting setups, etc.

...you're going to want to do some rudimentary things to help make your [ fight scene / sparring / etc. ] look really nice--to the best of your abilities and tools.

Again, I'm not talking about rotoscoping and fancy effects (since I PERSONALLY try to leave that kind of stuff "minimalistic", and instead rely on CONTENT)... I'm talking about helping you to comprehend some rudimentary film techniques... ones that don't require "uber-cams", nor uber-lighting, etc.

Anyhow... I do not have ANY idea if the folks who want to mess with NCSCS have any "real" interest in such things (building a fight scene, etc.)... but... I'm hoping that this is the type of following / customer base / community that Caine & I will be attracting.

More on this later, but... yup... I'm exciting about things!  A lot of the footage/final vids looks FANTASTIC.  :)  All in glorious yummy 1920 x 1080 (woot!)...

Are these in the same PC format as the first CD? Or will they work on PS3's/DVD players etc?

Either way is fine for me as I just threw CD1 onto my iPad so I can watch it on the run :D
Title: Re: Novastar and Caine's Saber Combat System "NCSCS" (1st COMPLETE System!)
Post by: Novastar on April 15, 2012, 01:55:50 AM
Ah, good question... I almost forgot...

For those who did not already know, NCSCS DVD#1 was made as the kind of DVD you put into your machine (sort of like... you know... a DVD of CONTENT/media), and there are:

* Documents - mostly regarding notated combat forms
* Text files / helpers
* Video files (duh)...

Video format was H.264 "AVC" MPEG-4 Codec (Advanced Video Coding).  We did this kind of setup (and NOT as a "watch on my TV" kind of "movie" video) for many reasons, most of which revolved around:

* Avoiding stupid menus that are just bloat--you can navigate the videos just fine on your own
* Having documents to share + disclaimers--would have been abominably clunky to manage/organize on a "TV DVD/movie DVD"
* Easier to scan through + pause + take a snapshot of footy through a computer
* Most video is "going the way of the computer" these days...
* Even when DVD#1 was made, there was always thinking to go with 1920 x 1080 for DVD2... and we had even HOPED to go with HD footy for DVD1 (just didn't happen)
* I don't think 1920 x 1080 is supported by "normal DVD movie vids" (??)  ... that'd be "blu ray" (?)
* Video codecs and all that junk are complicated as it is... so... trying to support all sorts of formats for the clunky "TV DVD/movie DVD" would have required a skillset WAAAAAY outside my jurisdiction, lol.  :)  Homie don't go there, hahahaha and homie don't play dat!!!   8)

DVD#2 is slated to be pretty much the same, although I've yet to somehow become "absolutely certain" of how people will "always" be able to view/hear the content right from the get-go, due to the simply endless throngs of variations of people's: computer systems... installed video codecs... operating systems... audio codecs... and--you guys know--all that jazz!!  It's kinda nutz.

That said, the "AVC" codec is a fairly big standard in the industry of computer video (I did my research), so... unless you simply never watch HD (or even SD!) video on your computer, it wouldn't be surprising if you'd already be able to watch/hear right when you pop it in!  :)

In fact, I have still yet to hear a PEEP from anyone who "never got DVD#1 to playback", although I honestly assumed SOME people (10?  5?  20??) would have had SOME kind of issue.  But... nope.  If they did, they never asked nor told me, lol  (nor Caine, I'd guess).  Come to think of it... I had/have an immaculate record with my Crystal Focus CD compendiums: even after opening a "troubleshooting" thread for each one... ummm... no posts.  No problems.  :)  I'm still flabbergasted at that!  Looks like I did my job very well.

So... yah!  Long answer, but... I want to make sure people who are new understand too.  :)

You should be able to manage the DVD2 just like you do with DVD1.

Thanks for the reply Nova :) Yeah, it's great...I'll be able to watch it in HD on my iPad this time round! :D

The reason for me doing that and not having it on the computer...I kinda moved my computer speakers elsewhere so I have no sound in the machine :P

Just a thought... XVID H.264 seems to be an excellent container for HD video and also very easily playable in ps3, dvd player, pc, laptop etc :)

I'll check that format out, Aus_Jedi... although I think it's essentially the same thing, and you'd find that any general "codec pack" online would support both formats (pretty standard).

Just checking in here... :-\

I know that a lot of you are probably wondering why Nova is more of the "spokesperson" and the "face" of NCSCS these days and why there are other people in the vids and where is the 2nd half of NovaCaine?

Firstly, I am in MAJOR training for my 6th degree black belt test. The training is VERY intense and I am very focused on this nowadays (yes, martial arts is my life). The test is May 8-12 (yes, it's a 5 day test!) and that has been my MAIN focus these days. This last month is going to especially be intense, but it's something that I know I am going to just tear it up.

Next, that thing called "Real Life"...two young kids, a wife and business. That alone eats up a GREAT deal of time and balancing all that PLUS my training has been a black belt test in itself.

Do I like seeing others in the vids? Well, I would prefer to be there but there truly is no way I can meet to film with Nova so it's pretty much a necessity to get things DONE. So what little time we have had has been used as diligent as possible, which is great.

So there you go. Once my test is done, I will be able to breathe and get back in the groove of things saber combat wise (we have lots of plans for sabercombat.com) so until then I will continue to be involved as much as humanly possible (which isn't much).

Thanks heavens for Novastar! The amazing and incredible amount of work he has done on EVERY aspect of this project is truly to be commended!! Without him, I highly doubt NCSCS would get done the way it has.

Anyways, in the words of Chuin, the reigning Master of Sinanju (Destroyer Series peeps will get that reference).

I remain.

My copy of Vol 1 arrived yesterday. Gotta say it's utterly brilliant & I highly recommend it. Just a quick tip for my fellow 360 owners, it does run quite happily on my Xbox 360 but not directly from the dashboard. Because they're AVI files you have to go to video apps, & select the disc from the video player app then choose which chapter you want to play. Can't begin to describe how cool it is watching Nova & Caine do their thing on a massive LCD screen in high def'! Thank you Nova & Caine for all the hard work you've put into NCSCS & I look forward to graduating to Vol 2!
Can't wait for my copy of Paul's saber spin tutorial to arrive now!  ;D

Glad you liked it!  DVD2 is even 10x better in my opinion, heheh...

As for "running" the DVDs... yup... we decided to NOT go for the whole "throw this in your TV DVD player and wade through clunky menus"... we figured it'd just be better to allow people to choose the files they wanted to view, and watch via their favorite software viewer.  As it is, it seems DL-able stuff is the wave of the future anyhow... which is why each individual video has the credits rolling and they somewhat "stand on their own".

For those who do not quite understand... here is an example of where NCSCS can be used to easily and quickly notate even "well-known" basic forms, such as Damon Honeycutt's interpretation of "Shii-Cho"...

Basically... these 9 actions can be executed/learned very, very quickly and easily (if you know NCSCS)!
