Original Thread content:
Starting this topic to show the progress on the creation of the DVD.
As of right now I have a script written up and a basic layout that I want to do.
I want the DVD to have a main menu with scene selection for each individual tutorial.
What the video will consist of:
Saber basics
-parts of the saber
-types of sabers
-different ways to hold the saber
Saber Spins-More indepth look at each spin.
-One handed Spins
-Dual Saber Spins (2 sabers at once)
-Double Bladed Saber Spins
I'll be getting a video camera to use hopefull next weekend to do the filming.
My brother owns a martial arts dojo so I will likely be using that as my setting.
I'll update the topic as I keep progressing on the DVD.
The topic will remain locked until the release of the DVD when comments can be made.
Thanks to everyone for the support in me making these tutorials. If it wasn't for those out there wanting to learn, I wouldn't be having so much fun!
May The Force FX Be With You!
UPDATE: The store is closed for restructuring, but you can PM me for info on how to order the DVD.
-
It shall not be difficult for me to author this DVD at all :)
-
Just worked out a new single saber spin exclusively for the DVD. Its an unbelievable awesome spin and it will take A LOT of practice to get it down. Its unlike anything I've done before.
-
sounds exciting. unlike anything before hmmm i wonder
-
Just ordered a new laptop to use for uploading my video from the camera and do the editing.
My desktop is so old it didn't have the right connection port or drive to use so I would be able to edit and make a dvd...so I had to upgrade.
The laptop I got is going to only be used for editing video and nothing else.
Scheduled to do the first run of video at my brother's Martial Arts school, Myers Family Karate & Krav Maga Center, on Sunday.
The Dual (two) saber tutorials were limited to only 5 lessons, so my Brother will be showing me some more Dual saber spins based from escrima. to possibly get that number up to 10 for the dual sabers
10 single saber lessons(including a new one)
10 dual saber lessons(including 5 new ones, hopefully)
15+ Saberstaff lessons
I will post more as details become available
-
Okay, should be filming this weekend.
Today, I worked on the DVD cover art. I'm still getting use to editing images, but I think it came out okay.
(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg156.imageshack.us%2Fimg156%2F3509%2Ftutorialdvdfront3bt5.jpg&hash=9c9801f1bcb25e459afe3883d81f8775ccb5b361)
Now I just have to do the Spine and the Back.
I'm still debating on if I will put a label on the DVD disc itself as I fear it might interfere with the playing of the DVD.
-
Dvd Labelling will not interfere with the playing of the dvd
-
I had heard that certain labels would. I just have to make sure the labels are DVD safe. I saw some today that advertised that on the packaging.
I will definitely test it in a few players before its final.
-
Tutorials 1-20 are filmed. I will be going through editiing those in the next week.
Tutorials 21-30 are set to be filmed two weeks from today. Then I will edit those into the rest and come up with the final DVD.
-
Vid is uploaded to the laptop and will begin editing tomorrow. So far with tutorials 1-20 I have 35 minutes of footage. I expect to extend the other 10 to add another 35-40 minutes.
-
Make sure your checking your audio and video levels :)
-
1-20 is edited and ready to go.
21-30 are going to be filmed this weekend.
Hopefully I will have everything edited together and on a dvd by next weekend.
-
Just seems that one thing after another keeps me from finishing this project....but
I finished editing all the video. Now I just have to set up the DVD authoring and make my first DVD!
I pray that it turns out the way I want it without any hitches.
Fingers crossed all!
(ive had a lot of time to work on this since I've been layed up)
-
Good luck, Ani. I look forward to it. ;)
-
IT'S DONE!
I burned my first 2 copies about an hour ago and im watching one right now to make sure it works fine.
So far so good.
It has exactly what I wanted where as the Main Menu has 2 options to "play tutorials" or "scene selection" When you choose scene selection you go to a page with the first 6 selectable chapters of the dvd. There are 6 pages in all of selectable chapters (1-34)
In the credit roll, I give thanks to all those here that have supported me in making this dvd as well as my 100+ subscribers on youtube.
Now the main menu isn't as fancy as a SW dvd with animated menus and all, but maybe oneday I will get to the point that I'm familiar with the software I have that I can do that and make a "Special Edition" with more content.
The Tutorials on the DVD itself have been expanded with over an hour of footage for the 30 tutorials.(10 single saber, 10 dual-weilding and 10 Saber Staff) Some tutorials were condensed into one tute to be able to add some new ones. I believe there are at least 7 new spins exclusive to the DVD:
-1 Single Saber spin which is just awesome once you learn it...I dubbed it the UV spin.
-5 Dual Weilding spins which were taught to me by my brother, who owns the Martial Arts school I filmed at.
-1 Saber Staff spin which can be used along with the "Darth Maul" spin.
Now I just have to get with Yoda to find out the next step.
-
Great! :) Well done.
When and where will it be available?
-
working out the details with Yoda on how to sell it through the storefront.
I'm sending a test copy to Han in the UK to make sure it will play on PAL players in a different region so we can sell it internationally.
-
Look forward to it Ani. I hope it will play over here. It would be a shame if it didn't.
-
i am sure it will work here, i will try it on my ps2, pc and dvd player to cover as many bases as i can.
-
I'm beginning the process of packaging. After I tested quite a few DVDs for playability(I test every 4th burn) I have to retest after I apply the label. Got 50 DVD covers printed and cut and ready to go in the cases. I will probably be done with the first 25 copies tonight.
Still waiting on word back from yoda about distribution. As soon as I find out I will let everyone know here.
-
Well done Anakin ,
Is it going to be region 1 or 2?
-
Great news, Ani. :)
I shall wait until Han has done the UK compatability test before ordering. ;)
-
It is Region Free. It should play anywhere.
-
It is Region Free. It should play anywhere.
Excellent. I thought that Han was going to test it out though.
-

I still want him to test it out to make sure it will play fine on the PAL player.

Ah, that's what I thought.

I'll be talking with Sidious this weekend on getting it hooked up for the store 8)

Awesome! this is greatnews, sorry that I've been away guys but I'm really proud for all the work you have been putting on this Anakin. Keep up the good work and I look forward for the DVD! I feel I haven't done much but if there's anything I can do to help let me know.
-
Hey Han,
Did you get that test disc yet?
-
WOOOO!!!! :) :)
I got my DVD
I just LOVE it,it so cool to have on dvd.
Perfected 3 new moves already and I have only had it for 12 hours..
EVERY FFX owner will want to have this and sould buy a copy ASAP!!
Master Bandit is the BEST teacher ever.
The way he breaks down the spins if I had a kid sister she would be able to learn..
I am now to the point where I am better at spins that I could have even though I could be,and I still have soo many moves to learn..
Thank you Bandit for helping me become a Master Rouge Jedi..

You are very welcome Kit, i'm glad you are getting great use out of it and having fun. You've always been one of my biggest supporters and I appreciate that. If it wasn't for you I don't think I would have been on the MR blog so many times! ahha
-
As you can all see, I sent out some advance copies to some special peeps. One being Kit and I also sent one out to Amy at Master Replicas. She got hers in but hasn't had a chance to view it yet. She did tell me that someone else at MR wants a copy for themselves so I will be sending that out to them too. I'm hoping by getting the DVD out to these 2 important markets I can get some early reviews and hype about it. Kit is already doing a great job!
The DVD itself should be on sale in the storefront VERY SOON as I am in contact with Yoda and Sidious and we are working out all the costs.
My previous estimate of trying to keep it under $20 didn't go so well since a lot of my costs were out of pocket. I had to buy a laptop just to edit the video and burn the discs ($800) and I had to purchase a new camcorder for better video ($400) and then the cost of the materials: blank discs, blank dvd covers, blank dvd labels, blank dvd inserts, ink for printing, shrinkwrapping...well you get the idea. It's been quite a drain on my wallet. So it looks like the DVD will be closer to the $25+ mark.
The DVD is worth it and more, though as I've seen most instructional videos sell for $30 and up, this is definitely one you can use over and over again. Its over an hour long with 30 tutorials, 10 for each style(single saber, dual saber and saberstaff) A lot of the moves are new and there are some complicated ones in there that will look fabulous when learned.
Note: in the credits I acknowledge all the people who pushed me on here to get this done and get it out on the market. So many of you will have your username in the credits, as well as my 100+ youtube subscribers.
-
i cant wait for the test disc to get here anakin. i really hope it comes today. sending to MR is a fantastic idea, it will easily make the Blog, (you always do), i dont know how many people see the blog weekly, tens of thousands i would guess, if just 10% of those are SW fans and just 10% of those have FX's buy the DVD thats a potential 100 discs, woohooo . i am sure it will do really well. i leave you with my catchphrase at the moment.
"i will let you know as soon as i get it"
-
Ok its arrived in the post this morning my wife says.
So today my Obi wan ROTS FX, Anakins DVD & my copy of Splinter cell double agent. all arrive. woohoo
i will post on here tonight once i have had a go with the DVD

Great work Anakin ,
It would make a great gift for christmas ;D
Anyways I just want to say thank you to Anakin , You really have put some time into this and you diserve all the best
-
Ok i have checked out the DVD and it is FANTASTIC. its really well put together everything works well the scene selections etc.
I confirm it works on my PS2 aswell as my DVD player. unfortunately when my PC went down i lost my DVD software, but windows XP recognises the title on the disk and all files are visible, so i see no reason to believe it wont work on a PC.
Let me say how impressed i am with the dvd, there is loads to go through, i will watch the tutorials and start practising asap. tutorial 30, is a great one. i also enjoyed the fun after the tutorials. its also cool to have my user name on the credits.
thanks anakin, you put in some seriously hard work here, it shows. well done.
-
:-[
Awww, shucks guys...you're making me blush! hahaha
Thank you all for the comments. I never really thought I would be going down this road into making something like this, but this is something that I've always wanted. I have always wanted to leave my own mark on the Star Wars universe and I'm thinking this is it. heh heh.
A little rundown on what it took to put that DVD together
Over 6 hours of film time to get all 30 tutorials
An hour of extra instuction in dual wielding sabers from my brother, Mark who owns the martial arts school I was shooting at .
A full 2 weeks (3-4hours a day) of editing the video itself to make cuts, add titles and credits.
Another week spent on setting up the authoring of the DVD (making the menus and scene selection)
Countless hours spent burning copies and packaging the DVD...
....its a labor of love and I am VERY proud of the video since I did it completely by myself as its finished product.
You know, I do what I can for those that I know will appreciate it. And I know that everyone here will appreciate it thoroughly!
Thanks again Everyone!
-
everyone knows how I like to photograph my prized pieces...well these aren't any different, heh heh. The first batch of DVD's!
awww, look at all my precious children, hahaha

Great Job Anakin! It is amazing to see all those layed out like that, i mean its a real representation of your efforts. GOODONYA!
I am excited to see it finished, i remember "and this is 100% true" that about exactly a year ago i saw an FFX saber for the first time. So i knew i had to have one. I scoured the net till i came across a little site called forcefx.com which at that time only had like your first tutorial or so, after seeing that and coming back several times for your videos i began following one link to another i found this forum. So its kinda your tutorial that started me collecting and becoming a member here.
Anyways, it really looks well done, i look forward to seeing it. I will be awaitnig it in the storefront.
-
WOW Anakin! :o I'm so impressed. I knew you'll have success in your very own DVD, Be sure to sign your autograph on mine once I buy it. I bet you'll become famous once everyone sees a familiar face. I'm looking forward to it and I'm sure everyone will understand how much time and dedication you have put on it so the price is fair, I would even pay an extra $5 to make it $30. It will be an honor to learn from a real Jedi Master, no doubt that's what makes you Anakin.
-
Okay, got a confirmation from Yoda, and with the costs of the DVD, the shipping , and paypal fees, the pricing will be what I'm selling it here in my brothers Martial Arts school...
$29.95 + shipping
so thats about $1 per Tutorial.

Well, I'm am glad that I was able to influence you into such a great hobby. As I'm sure I have done for so many more. Its funny to think that I just did these as a favor for some of the members to learn the basics in the beginning and it just exploded from there...everyone wanted more. So I had to comply. Its been a lot of fun thats for sure!

That's not a bad idea! Maybe I'll make some "autographed chase versions". I'll put the autograph on the inside cover so you won't know if you got one till you open it...hmmm...yes. Gotta pick me up a Gold autograph pen now.

i have the note you dropped in with the test disc, perhaps i will get it framed :D

UPDATE: I just shipped out the first batch of DVD's to Master Yoda and he should be getting them by the middle of next week.
-
Update:
shot a quick "commercial" for the DVD release that will be posted on here and youtube to direct traffic to the store. -
So Princess, how'd you like the DVD?
Plus anyone else who has purchased it or seen it. please let me know if you gained knowledge from it. Especially Tutorial 10...gosh I love that move.
Most requested change I usually get is that it should have music somewhere, but I didn't want to use any licensed music for fear of liability and im no composer so my voice will have to do! haha
MTFBWY!
-
8) This was AWESOME I highly recommend it.We been so busy getting our exhibitions and test fights ready for cons

-
They make great stocking stuffers, or that perfect little accessory for that lightsaber under the tree, you know! :D
Seriously, good stuff is on it! I was lucky enough to watch Anakin in person not so long ago, and I was rather impressed!
-
I still remember my wife getting me one of these during the first run of DVDs. I was so thrilled when I saw it in my stocking. LOL ... I couldn't wait to bust it out on the DVD Player.
Oh wait ... I wonder if Master Anakin will upconvert to HD quality on the PS3 I'm getting for Christmas! Anakin in Hi-Def! LOL ...
-
I have always admired my apprentice ;). The Dvd gets my very own evil approval, not that I have seen it hahahaha, but it cannot fail... *whispering with Anakin, ah yes 20% of the incomes, goooood!
-
Well those endorsements are good enough for me!
PM sent.

*chuckle :D :D ;D, there needs to be Saber Spin Tutorial Blu-Ray! Like for example, it shall reveal the body hair of Anakin like we're never seen it before :D :D ;D
-
I'm hoping that if it upconverts, we can actually see the sweat flying from Anakin while he's performing the spins. LOL... :D
Next thing, we need it in 3-D!
Now, with the blades ignited, that would be trippy. LOL ...
-
:o :o :o
At least there were no close up shots of up his nose!
J/K Ani! You know we're BIG FANS!!!
lol
and I'm waiting for it in IMAX.
-
Hopefully the future releases include the deleted scenes, we know that Master Anakin had a few of those hahahaha :D :D ;D
-
You guys don't want me to go to the Darkside do you?.....you wouldn't like me when i'm Darkside. ahha
There is an HD version but I only give those to my girlfriends as I acquire them.
There are many outtakes, but alas those will never been seen or heard as my skill is perfect and I never even said there were outtakes *waves hand in Jedi manner*
I am so glad that everyone that has gotten the DVD has learned at least a little bit from it. This all started very simple because a few guys on here wanted to know how to do the Anakin/Obi spin and it just grew from that. I'm glad that I was able to contribute to the community with my bit of learned knowledge and hopefully keep an incident like, "the star wars kid" from ever happening again! ahhahah
May The Force FX's Be With You All!!!!!
-
Yes that is exactly why I ordered one...I'm much too olde to be another "Star Wars Kid" lolol
-
These still available?
-
Yes, they are. PM me if you want more info.
-
Just a small review:
I just got my DVD two days ago and I love it- after reviewing the first lesson a few times I realized I was going about trying to spin it in a totally wrong way, it looked very jerky and not fluid at all. After checking out hand movements and how to hold the saber I was able to finally able to get the basic spin down, trying the more advanced lessons this weekend.
Thanks for the great DVD Anakin!
-
Hello, Mr. Anakin. Is there any chance that your spin DVDs will be included in a package with the new NovaCaine martial arts saber DVDs, or must we still order them separately? It'd be nice to get them all in one fell swoop and segue from spins to martial arts afterward. ^_^

Funny that you mention that...
Anakin and us are working something out...and that is all that I am going to say at the moment until the details are finalized.
I feel that this spin tutorial DVD is ESSENTIAL for ANY saberplayer and that if you order our DVD, you need to order Anakin's as a supplement. It will only complete your saberplay skills.

Thank you, sir. Perhaps there are really no such things as coincidences after all...
-
Yes definitely everyone here who wants to use not just build and display sabers should definitely get this 5-star tutorial DVD just as they should Caine and Novastar's new one when it comes out...i found this to complement Caine's original DVD nicely and am sure it will continue to be an excellent purchase for saber newcomers...as Siskel and Ebert used to say; two thumbs way up.
-
I'm following this now, and waiting for the update on the package DVD set.
I think I can use some dualling skills myself, seeing what some can do with their sabers.
-
While at Star Wars Celebration V, I met Ray Park and while getting his autograph. I gave him a copy of my DVD.
I told him that I know that he can't learn anything from it, but I wanted to show him what he helped inspire me to do to help others out there get more out of their sabers
-
Now that is really cool, giving lessons to Mr. Maul.
Do you want him to get better skilled and kill Obi too?

That's dope, Paul! :) I'm still looking forward to getting together someday (or at least doing a phone call) regarding getting our stuff all "together", heheh.
Also... you shouldn't think too much about whether or not person X, Y or Z (or Ray Park) can or cannot learn from your work. Ray Park is a martial artist... which means he HAS BEEN a student... and (depending on his perspective) that means he will probably always BE a student. :)
I find myself learning from all sorts of people, of all ages, from all walks of life... as long as I keep an open mind. I mean, really... take "tricking" as an example. I'm an OLD MAN compared to a lot of the "kids" I trick with... and they are all *WAAAAAAY* better than me.
So... not to de-rail, but... in my silly little eyes: the student IS the master... and the master is the student--and vice-versa... always. :)
-
Sounds like my mentor's take on the Beginner's Mind. :)

Great point Nova...afterall at the end of ROTS even the GrandMaster of the Order himself became a humble Padawan again of Qui Gon.
*in Yoda voice* If 900 years old you reach, still something to learn there will be ummhmm?

I'm still debating on if I will put a label on the DVD disc itself as I fear it might interfere with the playing of the DVD.
I wouldn't. I've had more problems with labels than with scratches... Computers hate 'em. I think Liteon makes a drive that will etch your dvd - I think that would be a much more elegant solution. Andthe drive itself is cheap ($25 or so)

Holy, jawa juice is right. man I wished eBay dealers shipped this fast. I ordered the DVD on Sunday and its here by Thursday. I couldn't ask for a faster shipping. Well I guess its time to put it in the dvd player and get practicing. NOw I have something to keep me busy until the Nova-Caine system is complete ;)
-
Glad you guys are satisfied! ;D ;D ;D
-
I am more then satisfied with dvd. It is wonderful
-
Hey Bandit, I shot a PM to ya. Totally interested in getting the Saber Spin DVD.
-
Talon,
your DVD will be going out today.
-
I am Caine, and I endorse this product 100%. ;)
Mine and Nova's saber combat system ties in directly to Bandit-Jedi's spins, and although we demonstrate them on the tutorials, we do not teach them....we refer you to purchase this DVD to learn the spins in full detail.
Thanks again, Paul!
-
Bandit,
Thank you so much. DVD got here promptly, and I have to say that the DVD is awesome. I know I got a metric ton of homework to do spin wise. Even took the knobs off my Maul to help with the spins and all.
Now all I need is the NovaCaine (hehe) Stage combat system and Caine's 7 Saber Forms DVD and the Circle will be complete. ;D
-
Totally agreed with Caine... in fact... when any of you come across my "Form 0" that I've created for Caine & my saber combat system... you'll find that you will need to know almost every saber spin that there is in order to perform/complete the form with speed, flow and precision.
I also think Paul is going to really enjoy Form 0 quite a bit!
Also... PAUL!!!! Hit me back somewhere, bro!! I want to talk to you more about this NCSCS thing before we release it (only days away now!!!), and I'm getting nothing from your e-mail... (sorry to hit you up here, but... didn't have much choice)
-
Hey Nova,
I haven't gotten any emails from you. Not sure where they went to?
hit me up a PM here.
-
Gotcha back! Thanks, Paul!!!

Just made an order with ultrasabers and included the dominix V2 LE for the sole purpose of learning spins from this DVD! Thought that would be a good saber to spin with. I'm currently waiting on this DVD to arrive in Australia, can't wait!
Is someone that has never spun a saber in their life going to have any hope at all to be able to do some cool moves? Or have I no chance at all haha...
Still be fun either way! Looking forward to the DVD.
EDIT: I received the DVD in the mail today and fired it up when I got home from work. My ultrasabers order hasn't quite arrived yet so I used my anakin hasbro FX while I was watching the tutorials. Keeping in mind I have never attempted spinning in my life here...
Ok so I started and I was COMPLETELY un-coordinated as expected. So I decided to put the saber down and watch the whole first tutorial and really take it in. Then I picked it up and started again. Ok now I'm finally able to do the most simple thing in the history of lightsabers ;) Then I watch number two, and same thing...but then I get it. I haven't gotten any further as of yet so its still at the super simple stage, but I'm confident I'll at least with practice be able to get through some more tutorials.
The tutorials themselves are really informative and done at the right pace, even for someone incredibly slow at this like me. I especially like the extra touch of zooming in and showing correct placement of your hand and fingers on the saber.
I recommend this DVD to absolutely anyone who owns a saber, its a must! So much fun to be had. I also like that it works in my PS3, so I can swing around the saber in an open space in my living room and not really worry about breaking anything. Thanks Paul for such a well informed, professional DVD.
Now to get back to the DVD!

Thank you for the review.
It really means a lot to me everytime I hear someone's story about learning something from my YouTube vids or the DVD. All of them were a work of passion and my little contribution to the universe of Star Wars.
Everything that I have done is because of my love for the films that GL created as well as other epic sword films. I taught myself everything from watching and imitating. No formal training which is why I think I am able to present the tutorials in such an everyman kind of way that is easy to comprehend.
The end matter is this, I want anyone and everyone who has a lightsaber to not leave it sitting in a corner or on a shelf, but to be able to pick it up and be confident that they can do some moves and not feel awkward in doing that.
I'm very proud of my tutorials and I'm so very happy I've been able to help others enjoy their lightsabers the way they should be.
-
Well that just makes it even more impressive that you didn't have any training and are able to do all of that. Very skilled indeed.

Quick question. Is there a reason why the saber spin tutorials videos are down? I just recently signed to the boards and was looking forward to seeing some saber spin tutorials to learn from. I currently spin POI balls/FlowLights, and i just wanted to broaden my view on FLOW.
-
The Saber Spin Tuts are down? Where? Shoot a PM to Bandit, I'm sure he'll help you out. If not let me know, I think I have an extra DVD lying around somewhere.
-
@ Asajj Ventress I go here http://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/index.php?topic=3828.0 then i go into the link and i see a big ol X on the video. Thinking it just might be a small mistake i click it and it gives the 404 not found, but further investigation when i go straight into youtube. i do a search "saber spin tutorial 1" and bam there it is along with his other videos figure it's him cause it says "banditcar", but the link is different then what is linked in the tutorials. Also if you do have an extra DVD pm me much mahalos!
-
Banditcar is indeed our very own Bandit Jedi. Let me make a couple calls.

Hmmm.... having the same issue?? Just getting an X when I try the tutorials Would love the DVD or to watch these tutorials. Any Help?
Thanks,
Letifer

I can't speak on the tutorial links (don't know what people are referring to--provide the exact post/link/etc. that is not working if you want more help)...
But I can say that the following are available at http://www.sabercombat.com
* Paul / BanditJedi's SaberSpin Tutorial DVD (all funds go directly to Paul--I just provided a "through way" for people to purchase his DVD)
* NCSCS DVD#1 (5.4.2011)
* NCSCS DVD#2 (5.4.2012)
More stuff will be going there in due time, but... I'm not going to be able to do all of it myself. It takes a village, as they say.

It might seem odd to reply to a post that's almost a year old, but I just wanted to add my encouragement, Dave316!
I watched a LOT of Paul's tutorials on YT and some of them completely baffled me. I quickly ordered his DVD and it was a HUGE asset not only in helping me to learn the spins, but also just to become more comfortable handling my saber. Keep practicing and one day that move that eludes you will suddenly seem so simple that you'll want to facepalm yourself for not getting it sooner!
For example, when I was still with GGK, Novastar took some time in one class to try and show us the Obi-Ani Plum Blossom spin. I just didn't get it. I tried and I tried. Then one day at home weeks later it suddenly clicked! I was so excited I made this short YT tutorial because another GGK member requested it.

Keep spinning away and it will come to you. Persevere and you will eventually be rewarded!
