Title: Official Saber Spin Tutorial DVD QUESTIONS & COMMENTS Thread
Post by: Bandit-Jedi on October 27, 2006, 12:29:17 PM
Well, I was gonna unlock the original topic when the DVD was in the store, but I figured that there should be an open thread for anyone that has any questions about the DVD that I myself can answer.  And with Kit and Han also having copies, they might be able to answer some questions from a buyers perspective.

So if you have any questions, feel free to post them and I will get back to you as soon as I can.

Thanks

Pretty soon the DVD will be available to purchase from the Trade Federation storefront here on the  site.  Yoda and Sidious are still working out the cost details of carrying it in the store.  As soon as they decide and I ship the first batch out to them, they will be available.  I'm hoping for sometime early next month.

I do believe this DVD would make an awesome companion gift for anyone getting an FFX for Christmas! 8)

I know, i have been doing some practicing myself from some of the videos, but would really like to have the DVD for slo-mo and other features to help smooth the process along in hopes of impressing some female SW fans heh  ;)

....And all because of your training.

Master Skywalker you should really get a paypal account.

I do have one, that I only used for ebay purchases.
The thing was, I never got familiar with accepting money through the paypal account.  Its only recently that I learned that once fund are transferred into my paypal account I then have to transfer them to my bank.  hahah, I know!  I could never figure out why I couldn't get to the funds in my paypal account to use unless I used paypal to pay for something.

Anyway, I have it figured out now.

Master Skywalker, how is the availability of the DVDs? Like, how many copies will you make for the first batch?

@Kit Fisto: it's an awesome rotoscoping you did in the "admin and mod only" topic  :D Can you/will you rotoscope the entire DVD?

So far, I have 50 DVD's ready to go.  I will continually make more every week and have a fair amount of stock ready to go afterwards.

There is no roto on any of the video in the DVD.  I decided long ago that an effect like that, while making it look good, would only detract from the actual instruction of the video.

I have to really thank Anakin again for making the dvd and tutorials.
Honestly if I learned it anyone can.
Before I never used to really take my sabers out in public.
But now I am to the point where I am confident with my lightsaber style.
I went to the park at dusk today, and within 60 seconds of me duel spinning my sabers there where about 30 kids and 10 parents forming a circle around me..
It was awesome, that all stood in ahh, parents and kids.

The I let 2 kids at a time duel with each other for about a min.
I had so much fun today, and best part is I got it all on recorded..
I will film the vid and upload soon..

But for those of you who are not sure about buying the video just watch my Halloween 06 saber spin skills video

Got my Saber Tutorial DVD in the mail yesterday, along with some AI saber mounts.

I ordered my copy as soon as it became available. Pretty fast delivery seeing as it had to make it all the way to Canberra, Australia.

My wife has already banned me from practicing inside, as I smashed a light fitting last night in the lounge room.

I guess it’s the laptop on the garden table for me.

Great work!

Excellent, its good to know that they are shipping quickly.

Good luck with your practicing...at least being outside you won't hit anything.   Unless there are some low flying birds or something.

Isn't that the truth!

I tell ya once you learn a few spins with the Maul and then start working on your speed you just don't wanna stop!

Oh, I've been meaning to ask those that have the DVD...how do you like Tutorial 10?(UV spin)   More importantly...have you been able to do it with success?

I can still only do it with either the Maul, Luke or Obi.  The other sabers have too much stuff on the hilts.

Master Bandit, It was great meeting you at CIV.  The dvd is great and I'm glad you had them available there.

Regarding UV spin.  So far I haven't had much luck with actually keeping the saber really horizontal when I do the spin, which is the point right?  I mean I can do it more vertical without issue but doesn't look nearly as cool.  I use a obi-wan (best ballance and design imo from FX anyway) and maybe my arms just aren't long enough to do it.  I almost always hit my forward leg.  Perhaps I need to lean more into it.  I'll keep practicing on it.

Hey arcana,

It was a pleasure meeting you as well.  I'm happy to hear that your are enjoying your dvd.  The UV spin can be difficult to learn at first.  You have to find the proper body mechanics to make it work for yourself.   Quite a bit of a lean must be made in the forward motion to give the blade room to come around.
The saber I learned the spin with was the Darth Maul single with the coupler on the end instead of the endcap.  I used the ROTJ Luke in the DVD tutorial as it can easily be done with that one too.   But if you notice on one of the spins you can hear the tip of the blade hit my belt buckle, due to me not leaning far enough into it.  Once you get the motion down you should be able to do it with any of the FX's.  I was using a TESB Vader to practice it earlier this week.

Keep practicing as it sounds like you are on the verge of mastering it.

Hello all this topic was locked when I first received my DVD.  But now I've just had that much more time to practice :D.  If you don't already have this, why are you waiting?  Very informative.  The moves beforehand in the movies left me mesmerized and scratching my head.  In no way would I have attempted these "Jedi techniques" with out the instruction you receive in this DVD.  Now I am a saber spinning fiend.  The best part is now I can quickly and easily show somebody else how to do these.  Nothing beats the sense of accomplishment you get as your spin speed increases and you technique gets more refined.  Thanks Anakin.

I have been practicing for 5 days now and I must say I really like the DVD.
Before I started training with the SST DVD, I searched the interwebs for detailed instructions but found only short and often incomprehensible clips, many of them done by kids.
The tutorials on the DVD are in contrast both easy to follow and well explained, I'm finally making progress.

I have two small points of critique:
There is a little background noise, when I play the DVD on my surround system it becomes bothersome. No problem when I play it on my Computer, though.
In the menu, it would be nice to see the actual name of the technique instead of just "tutorial x". In search of a special technique, I keep cycling through the tutorials.

Personally, I can only recommend the Saber Spin Tutorial DVD, I didn't find anything as detailed and sophisticated on the interwebs, Master Anakin did a great job here.

PS: One more thing, Master, do you have an insurrance for damage at third parties? --> My flatscreen TV and several light bulbs are kaputt.

Glad you are enjoying it and thanks for the suggestions. I had actually played around with putting the technique name on the menu, but the menu became so cluttered looking that it lost the "simple and easy" look I was going for.  Not sure about the background noise.  The camera I used didn't have the best mic. haha

SaberCombat now has...
...a portal / pass-through for Paul's awesome SaberSpin Tutorial DVD! :)

http://sabercombat.com/Purchase.html

We (Caine / Paul / Nova) did this with the hopes of getting Paul's work seen a little bit more (especially as time goes by), since he doesn't have his own website dedicated to the product and what not.  Soon enough, Caine and I will also either re-shoot / re-do or find a way to offer his "7 Forms" videos on SaberCombat.com as well.  Additionally, more content will be coming over time as well, time & logistics permitting... :)

I also want to make a nice SaberSpin DVD video teaser for Paul.  That would be dope, and he deserves a little help with that!

Finally, I updated the descriptions for the NCSCS DVDs a bit more, but... really... if the release teaser doesn't tell you what's going on in the 4GB+ of HD video... nothing will!

Definitely!  Caine and I agreed from day one when we teamed up for NCSCS DVD#1 in that... the point wasn't to "re-do" the spin tutorials Bandit/Paul did.  Why would we want to re-invent the wheel on those + it wouldn't be cool--exactly!

If anything, the saber spins on NCSCS are there to help verify good things to train for saber combat... remind people of Banditcar's DVD (if people look close at NCSCS DVD1, they will find a surprise)... utilize saber spins in what Mark/Caine and I called "Form 0"... and finally (when you get to NCSCS DVD#2), concepts & techniques that build from the basic/rudimentary saber spins.

I actually am hoping that Paul will someday do some DL-able content regarding saber spins on sabercombat.com!  That would be dope!  :)

Although there are some people who refuse to work with us because they feel they don't NEED to because they have all the answers and know everything good enough already (Nova knows who I mean  >:( ) people like BanditJedi are a blessing cuz they are open minded and enjoy sharing/learning knowledge. This is such a great thing.

I really have to say I love all the work you guys have done.  Such a cool system.  I wish I had a dojo here like yours where I could go an actually be PART of the class instead of just watching the videos though.  (I'm more of a structured learning environment kind of person.)

If I ever find myself in your neighborhood I'm going to have to come by for some schooling. :)
