The problem will be that it's not in a star format. There probably are no available optics for an led that shape. My guess is that since they say it can be used for headlights, it is bigger than anything we can use for sabers.

The Seoul P4 or the Cree type leds are white and they pack a punch! They are brighter than their advertised lumen ratings.

Besides, it most likely takes as much power as an Atlas led.

There is a formula that Do-Clo once stated, but I forget.  It regards balancing battery space, led type and a driver/whatever, into a decently sized hilt.

Look at the last saber Do-Clo made with the Atlas led. That thing is huge, due to the massive battery power it requires.

I read that new led needs 8v of power, but remember; If it dosent have optics available, it is usless to us. Flashlight guys will love it though.

8 watts.....I think more then anything heat will be an issure with this saber.... the whole top half of the saber will have to be ribbed since it will probably have to have an exposed heat sink to really ward of the heat of this thing...

Yeah, I would guess a 1"x2"  heatsink will be needed for that thing if it will fit in a 1" of less space.

Then I would have it finned and anodized and it would prolly still need a bigger heat sink.

Iamnot sure if I want to talk around with a water pump attached to my saber.

LMAO  :D :D . But seriously, this is an amazing LED, and you know just someone out there will find a way to get the heat worked out enough to slap a blade on the end of it, we'll all be amazed, prolly go "ooo! ahhhh!", and we'll all want one. It's just how I think it's going to work out, the heat is far to great to make a really badass lightsaber (with like ultrasound or a CFC board and some cool resonator all in one), you'd have heatsinks through the entire thing and who knows if those heatsinks would even be enough, you might need water coolant. kinda kicks the idea of a nice, portable, supreme saber out of the picture. but who knows, if someone wants this bad enough they'll probably find a way  ;)

Yeah it is a bit of a pain isn't it? But my preference is always green, I just love how green looks in lighting, as well as purple (so I guess white wins there too). Right now I have some K2 apprentices comin my way from Ultra, my personalized saber I hope to get this holiday season should have a really bright green rebel (with CFC prolly, I want to get my soundfont in there ;) ). But back on topic, I truly think that it'll take someone really obsessed with getting this done to actually make the milestones necessary for a portable b.a. 8 watt saber. If it does happen to eventually turn out, I'd swap out all my LEDs first chance, and I don't care if the LEDs cost 35 dollars a piece even.

I read that that new led needs 8v of power, but remember if it dosent have optics for it its usless to us. flashlight guys will love it.

And you need to think Alias. Voltage is a totally different beast from wattage. The LED takes 8 watts, and there's a nifty formula for figuring out watts.

Wattage=Volts x Amps

Following that formula, if the LED required 8V, it would take 0 amps which isn't possible.

Hmm, so if I hear you right, couldn't it be 8 volts by 1 amp? I think I might have my electronics wrong but I think my math is right.

True, but this LED doesn't take a amp. It takes around 600mA.

So it could be a 5W white led with many wafers?

I know that mah has something to do with the size of the wafer.

I think that theory sounds probable, could be 5W with wafers allowing the extra 3W. But were even the metals in the LEDs for the 5Ws made to withstand that much? Just curios.
