The Orcan Custom Saber
« on: March 18, 2008, 05:39:00 PM »
This is my first truely custom saber using the MHS system and a Ultrasabers blade. Do you like? lol

This was my first saber I built from plans I found ona website. It doesn't have a light or blade but it's still not too bad for a bit of cut up plumbing pipe. lol

I'm trying to decide what to do with my saber now. This is pretty much how my saber is at the moment. (This is a old picture so ignore all the wires, they're all under a plate I glued over the hole.)

I used all the scraps from cutting all the slashes to put these sort of "Tiger Stripes" all over the emitter. I think I'm going to paint them mettalic black then glue them where they are now. I wanted a "clean" saber but it's so clean it's basically just a pipe with a couple of slashes in it.

A crazy idea I had was to use this stuff called Monokot which I use to cover my model planes. The plate I glued on the bottom hilt is cutting me apart! lol Using this will cover up the sharp edges. These are also scraps from my first plane I built so I think that's kind of cool too, although dark would probably look a lot better.

I like the layered "tiger stripe" effect, I think that can work as a nice distinguishing feature, especially if you vary the texture and/or colour as you suggest between the layers/pieces. And the blade looks good - is it a cyan or green?

Do watch your hands on the edges though...  ;) did you sand off the sharpness at all? In case you didn't, I would imagine you could do this without affecting the finished look, and on the "stripey" pieces too...

Anyway, looking good and look forward to seeing more...

I did "sand" the edges, I ran the dremel over the edges. The problem is that the plate is slightly raised so there's still a edge. This becomes a problem when I'm twirling it around since I invetiably hit the edge. So it may not be sharp but it's still anoying.

The blade is green. It's a LUX III and I'm really impressed how bright it is. I turn off the lights and it pretty much lights the whole room fairly effectively. We recently had a power outage and just for the heck of it I brought out my saber and had our desert by green saber light. lol And to think there's a evern brighter one. lol Well only for twenty minutes until the battery went out. Unfortunatetly my battery pack didn't fit so I had to use a 800 ma battery which simply doesn't last for very long.

But I consider this my learning experience saber, so the next ones are going to be better.
My next saber is going to be a remake of the Obwan Padwan saber that I already built, but I have a problem. How I made the emitter was cut holes in the emitter and then glued black ribbed tubbing into the inside. The problem is that the blade holder and tube adapoter are about the same length as the whole emitter, which means that the blade holder will fill the inside of the tube about halfway down, so I can't glue the tubbing on the inside and have it go all the way down. I was going to do something similar on the OCS but then I relaized there it would only go halfway down.

Fair call  - I was thinking of something like this cover plate I saw on TCSS forums - it integrates well and the edges look quite rounded off, so I was thinking that something similar might work for you.

I hope you find a solution to get it a bit more comfortable to your satisfaction.

...and dessert by lightsaber light sounds fun lol.

Re: your other dilemma with the tubing and emitter/blade-holder set up - do you have pics of the parts you're using? I'm sure folks will chime in with some helpful suggestions when they see what you're working with.

...and as for quality of sabers and learning, they look good so far, and as someone who hasn't yet cut his teeth on building a custom saber, I have bags of enthusiasm and respect for anyone that's having a go  ;)

I used pretty much the same thing to cover the big hole I had cut for more of the black ribbed tubing, but once again there wasn't any room for it so I decided to just cover it up with a big plate. I think I'm going to compromise and use four strips of black Monokote. But first I have to get some. lol

It's my entire Aresonel! lol
I finnally included my Light Dagger aka a Maglight with a peice of a toy saber blade I had. lol

The next Padwan  saber is going to be essentially the same as the one in this picture except it will have the blade Holder and tube adaopter inside. The problem is that the blade holder and tube adapoter fill most of the inside of the tube so I can't glue the black ribbed tubbing on the inside to create the blank vents in the top of the emitter.

Cool. I see one of those sabers seems to be inspired by the Obi-Wan TPM.

Yes the second saber is supposed to a "Close Enough" copy of the saber Obi wan used in the Phatom Menace. I've dubbed it the Obi Wan Padwan saber since well it was used by Obi wan and he was a padawan. lol I'd like to know what the big "knob" pommel actually is. But I ussually just use a big knob, but it's still not techincally big enough.

I painted and glued the Tiger stripes on the emitter. Still have some pieces that I have to trim and glue but "the circle is almost complete" . lol I've definitly found the perfect name for this saber, The Tiger Claw.

It's been a while but I've got some new photos of my saber.

I added some pieces of Monokote to give a sort of Anakin Saber look to the grip and add some extra detail.
Also I included a belt clip with a ring on the end so it can be clipped directly onto a belt. I used the screw that holds the clip on to also hold
the back of the pummel on.

This is pretty much the final verision of my saber. The only thing I might change is some kind of recharge port since I have to take the pommel off to charge it.

I applaud your creativity and certainly encourage you in your ventures.  I like the tiger strips close to the emitter.

Thank you.

I'm going to try to build another verision of my Obi wan padawan saber with a blade and LED. But I've got a few model airplanes to finish first, but eventually I'll get back into saber making.
