Title: A real lightsaber
Post by: Danocrunch on October 25, 2010, 07:07:44 PM
please give your feedback on how you think a lightsaber would work or behave if it were real.  Also if anyone knows how ato build one please tell me.  ;)

Oh, and what is the closest thing we have right now to a real lightsaber.  I heard people have made sabers w a tubing that holds cold plasma...

Many of us have considered this very same question, and I'll tell you what I know from my looking into it (all who read this, please feel free to correct me on any of this that I write, for I am not 100% sure on the absolute certainty of these ideas).

The only legitimate scientific theory on building a real life lightsaber, involves both plasma and electromagnetism.  Basically using a form of cold fusion to produce a plasma blade that would then be focused and contained by the electromagnetic field into a solid beam or "saber' like weapon.  The only problem being that "cold fusion" doesn't exist yet, we do not possess the technology necessary to produce cold fusion.  We do have regular good old fashioned fusion, and could use this technology to try and build a working prototype, however the heat that this would produce in the hilt, would be like stepping foot on the surface of the sun  :o .  The plasma sword would burn through your hand, and then the floor and then everything else below it.  For the first couple of seconds Robot Chicken comes to mind (Qui Gon and Obi Wan in Episode 1 on the droid control ship in the begging) "Qui Gon" hey hold this for a second "Obi Wan tries to hold, but drops"  "saber falls through the floor" "random worker below" Hey look a Lightsaber!!!!, wait OH GOD!!!!!! "random worker killed by lightsaber" "Qui Gon" Shakes head lol  :D Ah The Hilarity of Robot Chicken  :D

So as soon as someone invents cold fusion, I'm sure someone will give it a go.

at this stage in the game, I think the closest thing (real life) would be more like the earliest forms of the lightsaber - i.e. the vibroblade.  In theory, we already have ultrasound technology and the ability to make objects vibrate at ultrasonic speeds.  Attach a good sharp blade and voila...  In reality though, this would be completely outclassed by projectile weapons...

Antiproton beam. VERY fine. Literally dis-integrates matter at the atomic nuclei by proton-antiproton annihilation. Liberates a lot of heat [strong nuclear force afterall] - and full spectrum light - but highly localized if the beam is microscopically fine [necessity for safety from gamma flux] so we get bright white aura and cauterizing cuts but little to no radiant heat. Use 2 intersecting cancelling free electron lasers as guides to arc the particle stream out a meter then back into the superconducting accelerator loop [new particle supply on demand when loop interrupted] and contained by multiple moving magnetic fields with polarity reversal that both repel AND attract ['saber lock']. Gyroscopic effect from very high rpm field generator rotor.

Requires 2 breakthroughs: room temperature superconductor material for extreme energy density superconducting torii battery and particle accelerator, and nanoassemblers to build through molecular machining microscopic cyclotron/helicoid particle accelerators and antiproton arc recirculating torus

Should be feasible sometime after the Singularity.

technically the inuniverse tech might work.. A highly energized particle stream ejected 10ths of microns thin from the emmited, caught in a magnetic field and directed back towards a collector.. where the partlicles are de-energized and collected, the energy being converted back to electricty and stored in the power cell in order to cycled again.. only downsides would be the lightsaber  would loose the material it was ejecting when it cut.. so it would need to have replacemetn cartridges but the battery life would be signifiganly higher when not cutting as very little energy is lost and seeing as the particles wouldnt be charged until they were exiting the hilt the exothermic reaction  (getting hot for those who dont know) would leave the hilt realatively cool to the touch.  you would not be able to duel with them as a field weak enough to allow cuttin when pressed up to an object would not be able to block another saber.

I've long held the believe that if you put James Cameron, Oprah, Bill Gates, and George Lucas in a room full of telephones and money, that they (through an army of minions) could get a working lightsaber together in a week.

Yeah, not likely that we will ever have a real lightsaber... at least not in the sense of the movies. Lightsabers are the first example we see in Sci Fi of technology resembling "perfect" energy. The energy beam travels out to a preset distance and cycles back into the hilt powering the diatum power cell, no energy is lost as heat because the diatum power cell is attuned to the Force, plus the properties of the Adegan crystals. The only time a lightsaber releases heat is when it comes into contact with something. So we may be able to come up with something close to a lightsaber, but until we crack the whole perfect energy deal (which many of you being into electronics, knows that isn't likely) we won't be able to make the lightsabers we saw in the movies.

techincally its not the force that powers the diatum power cell, the force is only used to bond the components at a molecular level.. witch gives extremely good effeciancy (as stated in I,jedi)

That's what I was saying, it is attuned to the Force by the Jedi who constructs that lightsaber.

I guess I should put my .02 cents in since my son wanted me too.

Boy I wish Igniter(tm) was actually "real"! But alas, I'm definitely not that skilled. Though I do suspect someday we will be able to have a "real" lightsaber; that is one that lights up to a certain point in space (like a fixed length flashlight). I doubt it would ever cut anything though.

Keep up the good ideas.

Padme used Anakin's lightsaber to cut him loose in the Clone Wars. I really hope I don't see someone comment towards this with "Clone Wars isn't real".

Plasma saber sounds the most legit

Well...I've seen actual blue lasers in the form of saber hilts.  They come with safety glasses so that you don't accidentally blind yourself and they will burn clothing and flesh.  That's about as close as we have.  I think I'll stick with Polly-C tubes for now.  The only thing that's in real jeprody is the lamps in the living room.   If I had something that I could accidentally blind myself with, well...I wouldn't be responding to this post because I probably wouldn't have been able to read it!

i'm thinking a simple particle beam driven by a diamond aperture with a massive EM focusing point at the end of the hilt that redirects and spins the beam energy cross.rotationally down and around the core beam back towards the emitter and into a collector/recirculator aperture would be somewhat feasible. the energy requirements would be less, the EM fields are containable, and the particles used would give it color based on the vibration patterns of the EM fields twisting them into their designated path. the down side though, is that you would need a steady supply of particles (oh wait... air is made of particles) as well as nano-tech energy cells, which we're not too far from making. after that, it's just perfecting the EM fields and not having any electronics on you.

The first protosabers required electronics on the jedi  ;), so it is still a step in the right direction.

exactly that. don't expect the leap to sabers to be directly to the end goal. aim for the steps in between and tech will follow.
