Title: SM Jedi
Post by: gchu149 on February 26, 2010, 05:22:26 PM
I bet I was the first one to bring lightsaber dueling to a high school. SM Jedi: The lightsaber dueling club at San Mateo High School.
May get together for some after school or weekend stuff, so if anything happens, i'll post it here and people are free to join in.

Just giving a bump...
School starts tomorrow, so another year of dueling with LED sabers (in which I still only have 4 to share...)!

I haven't decided on what day to host the club yet.
And I've been thinking about having seminars on weekdays, maybe get Novastar and Caine to help all of us out, and anyone else who wishes to join us of course.

Oh, and one more contradictory thing.
This club isn't even supposed to happen since the sabers are considered "weapons" therefore I am not allowed to bring them. Anyone give any opinions on this?

Thanks!

Nova and I would be down for coming to San Mateo for a seminar. PM me for questions and I can give details if you like.

Sounds good! I'll contact you once everything at school settles down and the club can publicize so I can find some more recruits and settle on what would happen.

If it's a club in school, it is very wise of them to say no one can carry the sabers during school hours. Think of all that possible bullying they'd have to contend with. I'd imagine they would allow the sabers to be left in the practice room, but not sure if your setup is or specifically just your room. Some schools share them (mine did all the time). I wouldn't want to leave my precious sabers for some smarty pants to take them.

Also how much room do you have? Would they allow you guys to practice outdoors (after school)? There's a million scenarios that I can touch base on, but you could always talk to the Principle and if he/she approves.......then you can lay down the rules for them.

Back when I was in high school (when saber dueling was unheard of), I participated in a sport called Ampgard. We would meet on the field during lunch and fight with PVC/foam weapons. Unfortunately, we were shut down because some girl and her friends were mocking us and said she wanted to join in on the match. So we let her and she ended up taking a quarterstaff to the face and then later complained to the principal stating she was only a bystander and that we suddenly attacked her. As a witness, our teacher/sponsor called BS, but in the end, we were still shut down.

Anyway, we weren't allowed to carry around our equipment either, but we picked a teacher to be our sponsor/chaperone, who would let us store the equipment in his classroom. Maybe you can do the same thing at your school. Find a teacher to sponsor your saber group and ask if they can hold the sabers safely in their classroom during school hours.
