Title: Anyone collect/shave with Vintage straights?
Post by: zed117 on October 18, 2014, 10:48:07 PM
Among videogames, lightsabers and comics I recently started a new hobby a few months ago. I started learning how to Shave with and maintain a straight razor through honing, stropping, etc.

Anyone love the feeling of shaving with an old straight razor?

Haha yeah cutthroat. If there is a barber in your area I highly suggest getting a shave. Best feeling ever.

I have had  the pleasure of a couple straight razor shaves in my life. Nothing like a stanger holding a razor to your throat to make you feel alive!

I have actually been looking into getting my own set for a number of reasons.

First, I love a badger hair brush and real shaving cream. The canned chemical goop always murders my skin and it stinks.
Second, disposable razors cost a fortune. My wife bought me a set of Harry's razors, which are nice, but still disposable, and they don't come close to the comfort of a straight shave.
Third, a straight razor will last a lifetime if taken care of.
Last, the sheer quality and comfort of the shave is unparralled.

I'm not so much interested in vintage pieces yet, but are there any particular brands you recommend?

This is a fun topic

Have you hit the bricks yet and tried a few antique stores yet?

Ask some of the older people you know too. You may just luck out. I seen a few of those things out there in my "found parts" hunting, but they pop up here and there and not often.

Sometime you won't know what your looking at cause of the case. ::)

I'll keep an eye open. ;) Let's us know what you find too. There are some real neat ones too. The best one I saw was a mother of pearl handle one. I was like, who would use this?! It had a silver mirror as a friend.

Antique shops are actually a really good place to look. My wife bought me a couple of them from an antique shop near our house, and I had them professionally shined and sharpened. I've used them a few times, and they are the best shave I've ever had.
