UK Duelling Club(s)
« on: December 28, 2009, 06:01:49 PM »
To all my fellow British folk,

Firstly, I apologize if you came here thinking or looking for a UK based saber club.

But do please read and comment;

Of all the people I've talked to or read about on this forum, most are part of a lightsaber duelling club or get together with fellow fans to practice and what have you.

So are there any British/Irish Saber/Star Wars fans who get together and duel or discuss projects/help one another?

-I suppose I should mention that I'm from Scotland, likely an important fact.-

lol I know, since I started to uni I've found a whole bunch of people with weird hobbies. Not that duelling would be weird, of course!

Well I suppose if there was enough interest we could, once every month perhaps meet at a designated area and just geek out on Star Wars. Sorta like a convention but drastically scaled down.

If you are at University, check out if they do societies. Perhaps there is a duelling club? I can't believe I didn't think of checking my Uni for one.

But still, UK fans out there...SPEAK! Please?

If we ever get the numbers into double digits, I'm sure we def will.

I've always been interested in swords and I did fencing for a while but it stopped being fun. Your idea
if implemented properly by those practicing it, sounds great. It's definitley something that should be implemented to keep things safe and fun.

I had a look at my University and if it had a saber or star wars society with no luck. Which is a shock really, so if I can't find one I'll make one!

absolutely make your own!  you are probably just one of a handful of people thinking that no one else likes the same things they do!  I've seen it happen time and time again, and honestly, that's how all the clubs got started, with one shout out: "Hey! Anyone wanna play?"

Good luck with your search, and keep us updated!

As far as I'm aware there aren't any near me (Essex, South East England) at the moment.
But I'm going to university in Cambridge at the beginning of September (Not Cambridge university, the other one, Anglia Ruskin, not because I couldn't get in Cambridge! I like Anglia Ruskin more! Honest!  :-X)
Hopefully there will be one there, or at least some kind of Star Wars fan group.

Looked around on the web a fair bit and couldn't find a thing.

It seems like as soon as you finish uni/school people expect you to become boring lol!

It was a real struggle finding an ice hockey team after leaving uni. I would have thought there would be some club somewhere but no.

Would meet up with you guys but I live too far away down in surrey  :'(

Wait, this thread has been read over 400 times - some of those must be brits!!!!!!! Speak up

read 400 times but this is a very old thread, i'm near Brighton and might be interested in this, people in the uk tend to be fairly uncommited to this kind of thing though, theres not such a wide following. Did you find a hockey team? there are quite a few from what i know, I have played inline roller hockey from an early age and know several guys who play ice.

Admitted there are more hockey teams than star wars ones.

Especially ice hockey which you are limited to having to find an ice rink. Nearest is Guildford but I'm too old and too crap to join any of their teams lol. Inline hockey is easier and there are clubs around...

Might start up some sort of saber group when I finish my second degree in june, but all that depends on where I end up living. Yeah us Brits seem to spend far too much time moaning rather than getting out there and actually doing something about it.

Also it seems to me that as soon as you get older you're expected not to play any more as if it is wrong if you do so - why?! I'm sure if I went to the playground on the monkey bars, without a kid of my own, that I would be a "questionable" character and maybe even be a paedophile or something rather than the truth that I'm there just for fun or maybe to have a workout.

If the effort was put in I could easily see lightsaber duels as a sport in the future. A bit like fencing but you can hit with any side of the blade and are not limited to just a strip to fight on. Afterall loads of people have gone out there and turned Jedi into a religion.

Just takes a small group to start it off and to keep it going. Unfortunately that isn't me at the moment with my comitment to my course and the fact that I am very likely to move to a different part of the country or even emigrate  when I finish in June.

Would someone else be willing to take that step? I hope so

I just spotted this and then found this thread as the apt place to share it - looks like there's a small dueling group in Cheltenham that's looking to start up in Bristol too. All being well, I'm moving to Bristol early 2016, so think I will check them out and report back if so
