SOLVED! Here we go again! Nbv4 “wakes” every 5 minutes!
« on: October 16, 2019, 08:50:09 AM »
Greetings! I am assuming I have a little short circuit going but…

Nbv4
Neopixel
Panasonic 18650 15 amp
Toss blade and hilt  pcb connectors
Lighted switch
“Saberforge” style recharge port

Switch is wired to ds pad.

Everything worked fine upon install and for over a week . Apparently I left the house the other day and did not put in the Killer key, my wife texted me midday saying “the silver one is beeping every five minutes. “

So when I got home to check it, now everything is completely wonky, wrong colors on the blade plug .  A couple times the blade plug did not shut off when the saber was powered down. Crackly speaker noises etc. if I remove the blade or blade plug ,The speaker behaves a little better.
Any similar  experiences or suggestion of where to look first would be much appreciated.
Thanks, Marc

A couple times the blade plug did not shut off when the saber was powered down.

that's an indication you have a ground path somewhere and the NB cannot enter deep sleep, and reboots instead. Also, make sure your activation switch has a dedicated low power ground wire braided / twisted with it

The switch is grounded separately and twisted 30 gauge PTFE.
It’s always helpful to have professional guidance as I still don’t have but a handful of successful builds to my credit !  I’ll post back after I have a chance to dismantle . Thanks Erv

Still a bit stumped here but I haven’t torn it all the way down... the speaker is blown ; apparently I neglected to turn the volume down from 4 To 3.  Is it possible the mechanical failure of the speaker/coil  could cause the problem? I’ll try to add photos tomorrow morning in case you see something I don’t, about 6-7 am (GMT-6) I think... I need a good dozen or two more failures under my belt for all this stuff (Diagnosis of my mistakes)to seem easy..
Thanks

Speakers can blow, even veco's. Often, that's indeed the coil to membrane link that will fail or the coil wire. I've also seen some manufacturing flaws but usually that translates with speaker rattling.

The speaker is definitely blown. I just wasn’t sure if that could cause other electrical issues by having a short…

your audio amp looks in good shape, I don't think it's broken, let us know if that works after changing the speaker. The activator should have a dedicated low power ground wire twisted with it.

It is twisted all the way down to the bottom of the hilt where the wires separate to go where they belong, but it did occur to me that it doesn’t go all the way back to the board. It hooks into the main ground about 3–4 cm away from the board. Messing around this morning, I noticed something else; if I plug it into the charger rather than going full red when charging, it blinks red three times and then goes back to green.(Speaker has already been removed) Usually if I plug something in that’s fully charged it doesn’t change to red at all. Prior to this install I had never used of those saberforge charge ports and I’m not sure I really like them but the hilt is set up for it, I’m sure I could figure out a pretty easy way to substitute the switch craft. As I clearly have a bit of rebuilding to do, let me know if you think it’s worth it and I will include that in the operation. And again thank you for all of your timely replies, It really helps keep my enthusiasm high for the hobby.

definitely move to a switchcraft one, what you describe is probably a faulty port or mis-wiring based on what the charger does

I think once you change the charge port as Erv' says you won't have an issue

I did test it with a multimeter with the charger plugged in to make sure  I had the right contacts. It just seems sketchy and wobbly from the get go. I’ll post back when I get a chance to swap it out. Giant bathroom renovation this week ...
As always thanks for the advice. The experience of others is priceless!!

Definitely the busiest I’ve ever been as a builder! After a move I finally got back to it stripped out the wonky charging port and put in the switch craft. Most of the erratic behavior I was experiencing with sound was due to the battery being low and unable to charge through the old port. While I realize this topic is now over 120 days and no one’s concern anymore, I know many beginners like myself find wisdom in posts that are years old. Once the port was switched out and battery charged, everything worked perfectly!!
