Title: JAR-KAI? Yes or No?
Post by: Caine on August 11, 2015, 10:58:50 PM
I am on the cusp of developing a JAR-KAI form that is just what it should be. COMBATIVE. Not a bunch of fancy, useless spins that have been done to death over the years with this form.

I am (was) known in this hobby for many years for my saber forms and real martial arts based combat,  but I want to know if it would be worth my time and energy to do this? Saber combat is DEAD AS A DOORNAIL these days, and all I want to know if any further contribution of my work would be appreciated? I am a very busy person and although I still enjoy sabers, I am not as active in the hobby as I once was because it only seems 3/10 peeps really want to see what I come up with.

If you are interested, please respond. If enough replies are posted (10 or more) I'll move forward and release some free tutorials. If not, I will shelf the project.

As you said spinning has been done so I would like to see your real combative approach.

I am also interested in learning about Jar-Kai. In general not much info can be found on two swords techniques

Does my post count if I say
'I would love to see your tutorials, but I will probably never be able to put your knowledge to good (or any) use...'?

Sure. I'd love to see them. I have been doing a lot of Escrima drills lately, and would enjoy seeing a Jar-Kai form. Thanks Caine!

Wow, thanks for the replies so far.  :)

I'll give it the rest of the day and see how many others chime in as well. We'll take it from there.

One reason I enjoy working with the TPLA guys is because we're all about seeing other folks in the hobby bring new stuff to the table.  This is no exception.  Considering your escrima background (if I'm recalling that correctly), I'd be very interested to see your Jar Kai applications!

I would watch it. I'm sure there are people like me wondering how to use two sabers effectively unlike the theatrical nonsense that is usually labeled "Jar-Kai".

Yep - I'd like to see it too.  Because let's face it: polycarbonate lightsaber blades are more like escrima than swords, so this should translate well.

Again, thanks for all your responses. It's very much appreciated.

I will be moving forward with this.  :)

Been working on the beginning section. Deciding if I should post section by section (like I used to back in the day) or wait and do all 4 sections at once.

If I do one section and post it, it may get people practicing  and working on it now, and then by the time I get Section 2 posted they'll have a handle on the overall form already.

What do you guys think?

Piece by piece is just fine.  I've always stunk at spins, and I use a certain saber for "home defense"  SOLD: Spice Mines of Kessel #5- By Caine. ANOTHER SABER BEING ADDED SOON. (http://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/index.php?topic=28340.0)

Sorry I've been away a few days and missed this Master Caine, but am very very glad to see this is moving forward. You know I've always been grateful for the work you've done since you began in this hobby (wow has it really been so long since your pioneering work on the & Forms? time flies when we are having saberfun eh?) and a true combative-based Jar Kai is something I've long hoped for and with your esgrima background you are the perfect one to make it reality...I'll be quite eager to see this! BRAVO!

OK!

I have begun.

I have the intro worked out and should be filming soon. It's taken me a long time to get motivated again (various reasons) but now I am VERY motivated and going to crank this form out rather quick.

Saber Combat Forms need a kick in the pants. And I'm here to do just that.

Stay tuned...

sorry to kick a dead horse, but were are the videos? I am actually interested to see what you have implemented in your interpretation of Jar-Kai.

I'm surprised this thread was resurrected twice, lol.

I am going to have to say that all Saber Forms are indefinitely suspended for now. If I do them, I'll do them on a whim...I am still involved in the community, but forms are not my focus now. I do appreciate the interest, though.

That's a big YES from me. I've really enjoyed all your content to-date, Caine. And having had some very basic martial arts training in my youth (Goju Ryu Karate, Roman-Greco Wrestling, some Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and some Muay Thai), I very much appreciate actual instructional material on some of these weapon forms... unlike the endless stream of teenagers in their bedrooms flailing around like you see all over YouTube. If you are thinking of doing some actual instructional videos - and for FREE no less? - I'd be all over it.
