Gold and size of the Obi Wan ROTS
« on: August 04, 2007, 11:08:16 AM »
You all have the Obi Wan ROTS for over a year now.
I have the Hasbro version and it feels very good to swing around with.
So I was thinking of buying the FX version, but I always hold the hilt with my pointing vinger and my thumb around the gold part and the rest of my handpalm on the black part.
I think most of you do it the same way.
So, the gold,... does it come off the hilt, or is it very good?

Also the size,... I sold my Mace Windu because of the size of the hilt.
Is the hilt-size of the Obi ROTS compareble with that of a real replica or is it to big?
The neck issue, I understand that part and I think I can life with that.

Thank you all

Darth Matth

Most all the FX sabers are slightly oversized. Exceptions being the Vader ANH, Maul and the new Luke ANH. Yes your right, the Obi suffers the fat neck but it isn't bad. It depends on the size of your hands as well. Plus, it will weigh a lot more than the Habbro. It is a great saber and I'm sure you would enjoy it. The gold could wear off after time. Depends on how much you use it. I have had mine for a while and it shows no sign of wearing off. If you plan to use it a lot, wear gloves.

If you've seen a Luke ROTJ FX, then it's the same size. To me, it isn't too oversized for handling. I had one, but I sold it to get into custom sabers.

If the gold on the neck is like the Mace, then yes it will eventually rub off. But you can tape off the hilt and use automotive clear coat to help protect it.

2010...I certainly hope it's better than 2009 was! ::)
10/10/10~Well, so far with my Father's passing away, I'd say that this year was actually worse than 2009, even the fact that I now have a full time job (For now) isn't anywhere near enough to make up for that...so...maybe 2011 will be better? I'm not holding my breath... ::)

Under the gold is brass.
If the gold wears off you could always keep the brass polished.
I took the gold off of mine with steel wool and I like the brass better.

Also, the Vader ESB is accurate as well.  ;)

Thanks for the welcome and here are some close ups of the saber and a picture of the blade in a dark room.
I also took the chrome off the switch box and polished the black plastic.
Now I can swing the saber and not turn it off by accident.

Here is one after I took off all the paint:

WOW Jedi Tom very nice customizing.  I have this saber shipping next week for my son.  It si nice to know that when his gets weathered, and it will, that I can refurb it and have it look like that.  I think yours looks better than stock.  Nice job!

Thanks for the welcomes.
I like the saber better now then when I got it.
I never liked the black paint on it.

That saber looks really nice like that JediTom!

Welcome to the forums! 8)

On your switch, did you just remove the plastic box? I reverse all of my switches on my FX's. ;)

Great job, Jedi Tom, that looks fantastic with the bare metal, rugged and pristine - anything that may have looked even vaguely plasticky is now gone. The neck actually looks really beautiful now, it looks like a totally different saber to me. Nice one!  ;D

On the switch box I took out the gold strip and the plastic slider underneath, I then cut off about 1/8" from the height.
I cut it down to the bottom of the grove on the side. I then sanded off the chrome and using different grits of sand paper I sanded down to (or is that up to) 12000 grit.
It now looks like I polished it. I then took a piece of extra black plastic I had from re-doing a Star Trek original series Tricorder and cut it to fit around the switch.
I can now switch it on with no trouble at all and I can grab the saber around the switchbox and not shut it off and when I sanded it I took off all the sharp corners so they do not dig into my hands.
I always loved the saber but never liked the paintjob, it makes it look cheep. They should have done the paint better.
I still have to repaint the rear grip because I painted it the other day and it was real humid out so the primer didn't stick good, but that can wait till winter.

Here are some closeups of the switchbox.

I always had a problem with the fat neck, but now it's a totally differend saber and I like this too.
Last year I promoted this saber to someone as a verry beautyfull real-looking non karakter lightsaber.
