Can the on board simple color mixing be used with a 7.4v battery as long as the die are resistored correctly? I know the manual recommends that the board be hacked to 3.7v but can it be done without the hack and not wreak havoc on the board?

I asked Erv this a few years ago here's the answer I got.

Keep in mind resistors are required most of the time and that the led Vf must be measured.

quote above doesn't answer the question : yes you can but the involved resistors will heat up a lot and their wattage will lead to a volume equal or greater than a Color Extender.
