Kickstarter : Thermal Detonator review
« on: February 19, 2013, 08:28:12 AM »
Hi y'all,
i'm one of the backers on kickstarted and thought i'd share what was delivered to me. The kickstarter project is finished but here is was :
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/oubliette/thermal-detonator-sculpture?ref=live

So i received a rather small box in the mail, but it was undamaged, so all good on that part.

My pledge was the 140$ pledge which gave :
"Majordomo Level" -- Showing off is easy at this level. You get the sticker, and a hand polished, fully assembled prop thermal detonator complete with working switch which pulls back to activate lights AND sound.

Some pics of what i got :

I found a rather big hole in the bottom which is intended for sound venting as far as i can tell ?

Then there were the 'goodies' :

Battery change will be somewhat of a challenge :

Overall i'm not that happy with my purchase and i'm looking to do a re-build at some point if i get around to it.

So, what do y'all think ?

What do I think?  :o

If I were to put that into words, it would not be proper on this family forum.  :-\

I agree with you, I would not be happy.  Not so much with the price, but what you got for it-so, the product.

For $140, I think we could have gotten a run of these done with Wat at the helm and done the installs ourselves.  I know there are at least a couple of sound recorder modules/kits out there that are inexpensive and would play the arming sound just fine.  Even had them made from delrin to keep weight and cost down.  Obviously, the 3D printing didn't yield the best results. :-\

As far as i can tell : the only thing that was 3D printed is the tiny stand. The rest seems to be some kind of cast/resin. Not even the keychain is 3D printed.

I believe the original was a 3D print.. that all the casts were made from.

(I dont believe the 3D print was even cleaned up/finished..etc before 'castings' were done/started... I can still see the 'lines/seams' in the filament...etc)

from their being late (although it was too bad)
the missing gold stands
the quality (chips, holes, bubbles, pits, drips)

I not classifying this as a success.

I got a DIY kit for 50$ without electronics and I have to say I wasn't impressed with the overall quality. I don't know if I want to waste any more time and money on this to install electronics.   :(

My wife purchased the $140 version as well. I purchased the DIY kit. Her's arrived in the same condition, major suckage. I've spent a couple of days on mine and am very pleased with the results. I'll be upgrading my wife's as soon as I finish mine. It has potential with some work, but when I buy something "completed" I shouldn't have to fix the dang thing... >:(

I got the completed version with lights and sounds. It wasn't great and probably should have been better for the price. I've already been at work painting it and fixing the internals. It'll be perfect by the time I'm done. Should have come that way but at least it is fixable.

I got one of the kits.  NOT impressed at all.  I'd be mad if I went the majordomo level  >:( >:(

My kit is pretty crappy and will take quite a bit of work to get it looking decent.  I'd say this is about on par with the quality recasted resin sculpt kits you can get off ebay that ship from china/taiwan/hong kong, and NOT of the quality I was expecting coming from where it did.

What constitute hand polished on this one? Doesn't seem to have much shine to me.
Doesn't even seem to be a material that is made to be polished.
