5W High Power LED Huey Jann
« on: January 18, 2011, 09:29:10 AM »
Hi,

after reading loong time, I finally joined this forum.

Please excuse my bad english, I´m from Germany and school is long ago.

The first saber I got was an Force FX Obi Wan with removable blade, which I took to conversion (green Seoul P4) by Saberproject.de in Germany shortly after purchasing it.
I couldn´t stand the LED spots and not satisfying brightness of the blade.

Next saber a few weeks later has been an already converted MR Anakin with a blue Seoul P4.

Now I finished my first conversion of a new version Hasbro Force FX Mace Windu, which got on eBay very cheap.

I installed a blue Seoul P4, after my experiments to get a nice purple failed with a SEOUL P5-II.
Brightness was way too dark and the colour mixing had been very bad.

Now I´ve ordered a couple of DX 3W RGBs to continue the experiments.
From what I´ve read here and there, these are very bright.

On my search in the net, I found these High Power LEDs in a german electronic store.

Shop link (german):
http://www.reichelt.de/?ACTION=3;GROUP=A535;GROUPID=3031;ARTICLE=96863

Did anyone already test these LEDs?

The specs are promising, take look at the Data Sheet:
http://www.reichelt.de/?;ACTION=7;LA=28;OPEN=0;INDEX=0;FILENAME=A500%252FLED-H5W.pdf

Maybe these are a good choice to be used with MR or Hasbro FX boards.
They would be underdriven by current, but they need very low voltages.

I have ordered one blue and one red LED, let´s see how they are performing.

Phil

Never heard of those LED's before, but Im gona suggest looking into the 10watt Ledengin RGBA RGGB, or RGBW. They seem to be the standard in purple hued blades. Note you wana use a resistor on the red die that "constricts" the current so to speak, so that way you get a nice deep purple instead of a brighter more pinkish purple.

Interesting found... but like most of the lightsaber discoveries we need to test it. Since you are going to buy a pair of those please post pictures of your results. If you have other leds or even a fx stock saber you can put comparative pictures in order to contribute more to the "saber cause"

Please Master Aurum Solis could you please specify what battery solution, resistor value and conection combination you can use to get that shade of purple that you talk about? (maybe a PM not to derail this thread). I'm quite intrigue on this set-up for a Mara Jade project. Thanks a lot

Those appear to be rebranded Prolights.  The Seoul P4s are going to give better results with Hasbro or MR as they also have low voltage requirements but also low current requirements (although you can drive them fairly high, they do not require it).  In your neck of the woods, you can find them here: http://www.led-tech.de/en/High-Power-LEDs-Seoul/-3.5W-Seoul-LEDs-c_121_78.html .

I can´t imagine the 10W could be driven by a MR soundboard.
Maybe one good mixed colour can be adjusted with an acceptable brightness.

My intention is to switch through the colours with a BCD rotary switch or s.th. similar.
I will build a simple setup for testing first.
Lowest resistor possible for the red, and fine tuning with 10 Ohm trimmer.

Why are there no ultrabright RGBs with 6W and low current (<400mA) and voltage demands?

The ordered Huey Jann red and blue 5W LEDs will arrive tomorrow.
They are coming from Taiwan, don´t know where the Prolight are coming from.

I will do some simple tests and if they are promising more on the weekend.
Some pics will follow.

My Hasbro Mace and MR Anakin both have a blue P4, but the newer LED in the Mace has a darker blue.
Seems to be a different binning.
Maybe I will put the Huey Jann into the Mace to compare it with the Anakin.

I have no clue when DX will ship their famous RGB LEDs.
They are in stock, but nothing happened until now, no shipment, no tracking no.

How long does it normally take to finish an order?

DealExtreme is affectionately also known as ExtremelySlow :D.  You are also entering into Chinese New Year where everything shuts down for almost a month :-\.

You are correct that the 10Ws cannot be well driven by an MR board, although some folks have done it anyhow.

So far, for MR boards, those DX RGBs (which are also prolight 3W knock-offs) are the best bet.

I don´t think these are rebranded Prolights.

The Prolights 5W have nearly double voltage demands and 700mA.

A little comparison of the specs:

Prolight 5W
4.4 V red 113.6 lm @ 700mA
7.1 V blue 30.6 lm @ 700mA

Huey Jann
2.3 V red 136 lm @ 1400mA
3.8 V blue 96 lm @ 1400 mA

Seoul P4
2.6 V red 86 lm @700 mA
3.5 V blue 38 lm @ 700 mA

My Mace board delivers 4.1 V and 1080 mA max.
So I have to see how they will perform with it.

Edit:
DX is a chinese shop?
Oops, I thought they are in the US.

You may be correct, although the prolights vary as they have several different types and several of their 3Ws seem to have similar values to the LEDs you linked.  I will look forward to seeing your results :).

Yes, DealExtreme ships from Hong Kong, and they can be quite slow.  They are sort of hit or miss with shipping times.  Sometimes you will get things in a couple of weeks, sometimes a couple of months :'(.  If you order right now, you probably won't see orders filled until end of Feb. as Chinese New Year begins Feb. 3 and their celebration lasts 15 days.  In my experience, they gear up a week before and wind down a week after so you lose 3-4 weeks, minimum.  If you've already ordered, you might get lucky and have your shipment sneak out before the festivities start :D.

LED arrived -> pics posted

Here are my sabers, all have the 10 degree Carclo lens.

Photos shot on a cloudy day with closed curtains.

MR Anakin blue Seoul P4

ForceFX Mace Windu blue Seoul P4

Comparison Anakin / Mace

ForceFx Obiwan RotS green Seoul P4

All blades from saberproject, except the Mace, where I used my own diffusor.

Update:

The LEDs arrived, here are the promised pics.
Red will follow later, but I have no other red blade to compare.

Comparison Huey Jann 5W blue vs. Seoul P4 blue 3.5W

Both driven by MR soundboard without resistor.

Left side my Mace Windu shown above, right side test setup Huey Jann

Upper blade is my Anakin shown above, below the test setup of the Huey Jann.

The Huey Jann seems to be a winner.
Although it is underdriven it is noticable brighter than the P4.

Carclo hexagon lens holder fits perfectly, I used the 10 degree lens for the pics.

The Huey Jann needs good cooling!!

Happy testing.

Update 2:

Red Huey Jann with same MR board as above, 1.5 Ohm 2W resistor.

Resistor became very hot, so maybe a 5W resistor and a DIY cooling solution would be better.

1 Ohm is giving a very beautiful bright red and evenly lit blade, but I only dared to power it for a few seconds.
So no photo of this setup.

What is this Huey Han thing? Is it like a LedEngin knockoff with 2 3w dies? Is there a better spec sheet? The one on the first page suckz. What Optics are you using? The Dome looks big at 8mm?

The Huey Jann are single die 5W LEDs from Taiwan on a standard 20mm star pcb.

Specs:
HPB8b-43K5G/WPCB   Green  1400mA   typ 3.8V   max 4.3V   160 lumen
HPB8b-44K5Y/WPCB   Yellow  1400mA   typ 2.3V   max 2.8V   120 lumen
HPB8b-45K5R/WPCB    Red     1400mA   typ 2.3V   max 2.8V   136 lumen
HPB8b-48K5BF/WPCB   Blue   1400mA    typ 3.8V   max 4.3V    96 lumen

or PDF from the manufacturers website:
http://files.hueyjann.tw/Hi-Power%20LED%200.5W-5W/5W%20High%20Power%20LED/HPB8b-4xK5x.pdf

The dome is about 7mm.

A Carclo lens holder with the plain tight lens for Lux III, P4 fits perfectly without modification.

The blue LED shown on my previous post is driven without resistor by a MR Anakin board with three AA Eneloop batteries at full charge.

This LED maybe needs a slightly better cooling than the P4.
I have used an aluminium cooler, maybe a coppermade like the TCSS led holder would be a better choice.

These LEDs should normally be cheaper.
The german shop is known to be very expensive.

If a shop from the US would take them in stock at large numbers, they could cost nearly half of the P4 or a Ledengin 5W.

I really would like to know, how they will perform with a better LED driver or a CF.

Now I will wait for the DX RGB, status of my order changed to packacking.
So maybe they will be shipped before the Chinese New Year.

Unfortunately I´m not equipped well enough to build a custom saber at the moment.
But it will come later this year.

If only the CF V5 would be available.
Then I would take the Ledengin 10W RGBW and put both in the Mace hilt.
