If you're after an 'authentic' Star Wars, I have seen many listings on ebay for DVD copies of the old laser discs.
These were produced before the special editions and so should not have the 'improvements'.
I don't know what the quality is like, but I imagine that a laser disc to DVD transfer should be pretty good, not as sharp as the new DVDs because they have been digitally re-mastered, but they should still be o.k.
I have seen these go for as little as £10 english for a set of three and they come with glossy printed cases.
There is also currently a listing for a 'definitive' edition of the original trilogy. Not sure how these came about but I expect they are from the laser discs too. They definitely don't look like official versions.
I keep thinking about buying one of these, but I think that really GL should re-re-release the original films in their original format.
To the older fans, like me, part of the attraction of Star Wars is the nostalgia of reliving the experience that you first had as a child, plus Lucas could make even more money by making us all buy another edition. He must have thought of it, he's too merchandise conscious not to have.
I still love the re-mastered versions, but it really bugs me that so many obvious changes have been made to the good old Star Wars that I remember.
It seems almost sacrilegious.
