NBV3 wont boot
« on: March 02, 2018, 09:34:31 AM »
I wired up a NBV3 inside my saber and it wouldn’t boot up, I ripped it all out and quickly wired it all up outside the saber, same result. Can anyone see what I’ve done wrong?

I know the soldering is ropey it will all be completely re done once I find the problem.

I don't see any speaker wired to the board.
I would also bypass the switch and use only two wires to see if the board starts.

Yeah I didn’t wire the speaker on the 2nd time, is it needed for it to boot?

I’ll wire the speaker on either way and try the switch wires thanks for the help I’ll let you know how it goes.

I've now wired the speaker and removed the switch, touching the 2 wires does nothing, still no life.

The accent LED isn't lighting up either which I've also wired up to the 3.3v

What else can I try? do you need any more photos?

If you don't have the 3.3 volt then the board is not getting power or the regulator is fried. First check voltages on the board input and on the 3.3 volt manually with a dmm.

Just for the sake of ruling everything out; can you test with another battery? Preferably one that you know is charged up and works.

I don’t have one but I did try touching the LED wires to the battery and nothing happened, maybe the battery is dead, I left it charging for about 2 hours, unless my recharge port wiring is incorrect?

If your battery can't power even the LED, then you're not getting enough (or any juice). If you're in a pinch for a 18650 Li-On battery, I'm told you can visit a Tobacco or Vape store for one because it is popular in vapes. Make sure you get a protected battery!!

left the battery charging all day and its now powering the LED's, im getting an indication of 3.5V from a DMM on the battery. I've rewired the board minus the recharge port and its still dead, though i am getting faint crackles from the speaker now.

which pads should I hold the DMM to on the board?

Power supply pads of the board and also 3.3v pad.
To be noted that 3.5 volts is definitely not a charged battery

I obviously did something wrong, I’ve wired up just the recharge port to the battery and plugged it in, this time the light on the charger went red instead of off. I’ve noticed that if I wiggle the positive wire it seems to stop charging/start charging like it’s a loose connection, but there’s plenty of solder there and it’s solid on the + pad. I’ve also noticed if I put the red lead of the DMM on the + pad of the battery the reading is inconsistent/drops, there’s 2 tiny holes at the base of the + pad, if I stick the probe in there the reading is solid. Should I wore the positive wire into one of the holes or try again on top?

After charging, the battery is now at 3.8V is that it charged? It’s a 3.7V battery apparently.

I’ll try the board again tomorrow and see if I’ve fried it during all this...

your RP is probably the issue. A 3.7V battery fully charged reads around 4.2V.

Quick update, I’ve now wired up a new battery minus the recharge port and the board fires up and is completely fine.

Next step is to wire up the RP with the new battery to see if that’s broken.
