Title: ISSUES WITH THE FORUM
Post by: HAN SOLO on July 08, 2009, 11:31:04 PM
Hey there Folks,

A few Members have informed me of this issue. I am doing a survey over the next week, of what is happening with all Members technically. I am interested to know when these things happen, what happens and if it happens to this Site in general, not other Sites that you frequent.

Please, try to be brief in recording your posts. I have to compile all these and speak to the proper people about what is going on.

Thank you,

HAN SOLO

Not sure if it's helpful to you but I'm a pretty heavy user of the forums and I've never experienced any issues, really ever. I use Firefox, dunno if that has anything to do with it.

1. Picture uploading and even using links from Photobucket generates error page
2. Page refresh occasionally generates error page
3. Page loads partially, then errors off, (mostly in pic heavy threads)

Using firefox 3.0.11

1. Page refresh occasionally generates error page.
2. Page loads partially, then errors off.
3. Failure to load any FX-Saber page, though internet was working fine (last night).

Running the latest version of Firefox.

I've those issues as well, but I use Explorer. It may be the annual "Summer Cleaning" we go through each year, but unsure.

I seem to also have very long waits for a post to go through.

Starting last night and most of the day today the board was either loading very slowly for me or not loading at all.  I also couldn't post for the longest time until late today.  Every time I tried to post I would end up getting just a white page.  Things seem to be okay now and it's only this site I ended up having problems with.

I have had a few issues recently of posting a message, and it not being there after I hit the "post" button....this has happened 5-6 times the past month.

Anyone else had this problem?

Starting last night, the posting errors started for me. 'Had to try seven times (post, time out, restart forum, post) just to get a single post to stick.

It seems better today...but I'm still seeing random errors.

I use Explorer.

Last night was the first time having this experience, but here are the issues:

1. Trying to submit posts.
2. Page loads partially, then errors off.
3. Go back page and submit again, and post seems to go where intended.

All day yesterday starting yesterday morning I had problems...though I was able to log in okay pages loaded slowly for me and after my first post which was slow but eventually went through, I found that any attempt to post 'hung' until I got white pages every time so was unable to post all afternoon and evening.

I use I.E.6 mostly but tried Google Chrome last evening and got no better results.

I did find things slow on other sites too but not as bad so I wondered if the problem was just me until I saw this.

Today is still slower than normal but at least I've had posts go through ok albeit slower than usual...today other sites work normally for me except I've had trouble getting on TCSS.

*submitted FYI*

I have had the same issues using both I.E. 8 and Firefox 3.0.11.  I had the same problem using both my desktop and my laptop,  both of which have either browser installed.....it took me 12 tries yesterday to get 4 pictures to post in packbrew's CS-17 build topic....after that,  I gave up and posted the link to the photoalbum.... ::)

Me too and also the occassional "error in posting".  This happens most frequently when someone is posting at the same time and it asks me to review the next post.  If I do and still want to post, occassionally it malfunctions.

Last hour.

1.  Pages not loading or timing out.

2.  Broken links when I know it is a good link.  I was reading the Jedi council discussion thread and going page by page.  I know the next page     was there but I got a few missing links before I finally could view the page.

3.  Slow page loads.

EDIT

Thanks Han for starting this......

Everyone,
It seems there is an issue currently with load times/timing out. Also, partial loading then errors. I will be getting with Senator Organa & Yoda to look into some of the issues. But for the main part, Keep this topic going with all of the forum problems you all are encountering....

Thanks-
Vader

TYPE PROBLEM! FF ONLY

Problem corrected....for some reason, when I tried to type, the cursor would like, go behind and then go in the middle and do weird stuff, resulting in this...fiendish result, my keyboard worked fine and the forum worked fine in IE, only FireFox...

Upload them from photobucket. www.photobucket.com. Then just paste the URL of the image in between the IMG codes.

I'll try it but are you saying the upload feature of the forums is down forever or is there an ETA of repair? Much easier than photobucket by using the forum uploader.

It is not "broken", just simply unavailable for us members to use. It was taken down because uploaded pics were taking too much space in the FX-Sabers database. ;) ;)

Extreme difficulty in sending a pm.  The line I am typing on disappears below the window so I am unable to see what I am typing until I get to the next line.  It is almost impossible to go back and edit the pm.

I have had this happen once before on the forum about a year? ago.

I had that issue a few times when I downloaded the new piece of worm ridden filth of a new Microsoft Explorer. :D I uninstalled it and have not had too many issues since.

Like ALL Microsoft's products, they are made to fail. ;)

My previous posted issues had gone away for a few weeks, but now I'm having a new one. Rarely happens while I'm moving around the forum, but when I'm surfing something else or come back to my PC after leaving the forums up like I always do its generated an IE error and closes after clicking through. Happened 5-6 times this week so far. Not getting it with any other sites and I haven't upgrade to the Internet Exploder yet so its not that. I guess I could try a different browser too, but so used to IE from all my work stuff not working with anything else  >:(

Oh I do like firefox, but a lot of my vendor apps simply will not run at all in anything but IE and that is all they are certified to work in. I have other tools that won't work in IE either so go figure. I have both installed on every machine I own so just a matter of retraining my mind to use the other instead.

There is definitely issues that occur with this site.  When loading anything yesterday, whether it was a text response or pictures, there was either a significant delay or a straight time out.

I am using Firefox and have had no issues on any other sites that I have been posting threads in.  RPF, Rebelscum, 501st Spec Ops, 501st Sith Lords, etc. etc.  so it's obviously something involving this site specifically.

Also, Please continue using this topic to post any other issues so we can diagnose them as well (if you are able). Thanks.

Access issues with the Forum ( as of late )  seem to be server related... rather than forum related.

This is just my suspicion... as both the main website at www.fx-sabrs.com & the forum were affected and were inaccessible.

I've also noticed that it acts like it is not being able to contact the server.  It's not constant either, comes and goes, and it does not seem to matter what time of day or night, either.  Could it be that the site is getting more traffic than it can process?

Edit* I forgot to mention, I've been using Firefox since before I started coming here.  IE seems to give way too many problems over here in the Middle East, no idea why.  It is up to date, as far as software updates, last updated about a week ago.  I was having these problems prior to the last update, as well.  As I mentioned in a previous post, I thought the issue was due to my less than stellar ISP, then I saw this thread...

That's what I was wondering. I've been having the same problems mentioned above for the past week ("session has timed out", can't connect to server, etc.). I downloaded Firefox thinking IE might have been the problem.
Haven't had any problems...yet.

I've been having similar problems accessing the site via AOL.  (No AOL jokes, please.  ;D )  When I go through IE, there's absolutely no problem.  But on two separate machines, when I try to get on with AOL, I either get a server error, or a "404 - Not Found" error.  Or even worse, it makes the browser go nuts and keep on reloading rapidly.  If it actually stops, I get the "not found" error again, and the URL that appears in the address bar is something like " http://www.fx-sabers.com/PnRUX/PnRUX/SQdbO/SQdbO/VRpTM/forum/index.php " or " http://www.fx-sabers.com/TRPlS/TRPlS/LQXiK/NpRpN/NpRpN/NpRpN/LQXiK/QfOMQ/XUPKR/XUPKR/forum/index.php " or some similar jumble of letters between the ".com" and the "forum."  Any ideas?

I'm finding lately when I write a long post the text will 'jump' up a line after typing each letter after a certain point so that the line I'm typing on is no longer visible in the text entry box, very disconcerting and making it almost impossible to spell or type correctly on long posts.

I know double posting is frowned upon but when you cant see what you are typing because the lines 'jumps' out of sight below the edge of the entry box and even if you pull down to see it the text jumps up to the top again with each letter typed its impossible to continue much farther than another line or two then one has to start another post.

I hope that glitch can be fixed soon.

i have a strange display issue. I think it is more related to my browser than to the forums itself. Since today most of the text and images have become very small. I can barely read it. For example the textbox im writing in now. Or the top left display where the personal messages are listed. I am using Firefox but could not find out why this has happened or what i may have clhanged. The home section of Fx-sabers is also kind of compressed. When i change font size it changes the font size of the threads but nothing else.
When i use IE (which i do not prefer) everything looks normal as it has with Firefox since last night. Any suggestions?
Probably it is a simple issue and im just to blind to see it.... >:(
Sorry if this is the wrong section to post in.

Edit: i think i found the problem. Looks like i have pressed Ctrl + - and this had zoomed things out. Just wondered why it did not show it somewhere...

Hmm...try pressing the + and - keys on your keyboard, sometimes they can adjust the zoom of the page. It sounds like you "zoomed out" on Firefox.

Im on firefox now, with no issues.

Sounds like u have something setup different, or a recent update in either the O/S or FF caused the changed. Check your fonts setting tools:options:content
It should be Times New Roman and size should be 16.

Thanks you both Chewie and Master Durangus :)

It was exactly that thing with the - key that zoomed out.

Terrible time today.   I keep getting the IE error screen, "missing link".

Unable to pm currently.  And posting takes at least 2-3 attempts.  Page loads are slow.

1. Picture uploading and even using links from Photobucket generates error page
2. Page refresh occasionally generates error page
3. Page loads partially, then errors off, (mostly in pic heavy threads)

Using firefox 3.0.11

I have the same issues.

Me too.

wut? It happens from time to time, no biggie,

forum maintenance, server issues, attempted sith overthrow,
late last week it started getting laggy, probably something going on with the server or the host.

That said though, if u are still having problems, clear your cache, delete ALL cookies and history and try again.

topic merged w/ existing forum issue topic.

Lately I have issue getting notifications from the forum. Sometimes I get them minutes after the post was made in the thread, then again sometimes it takes one hour or I don't get a notification at all. I have noticed this agian recently when erv made a post in his CF sales thread. I received the notification one hour after the post.
There have been some posts in erv'v CF5 discussion thread that other members are experiencing the same notification problems.

There should be no problem with my mail settings, since they are on a private server and I know for sure they are not held up somewhere on the server.

I also have this problem with PM notifications. I received five PM's today and only got notifications for three.

I have this problem as well. In fact when I hit the quote button, since it filled the box I had to cut that out just to type this. Once in a great while I do not have this problem but that is the exception.

The attachment function is disabled,  so it is not possible to upload pictures to this forum from your computer....you must first upload them to a photo hosting website such as Photobucket or imageshack then use the appropriate coding for the image in your post.

If you're new to the forums here,  you might want to read over this topic:
http://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/index.php?topic=3725.0
It explains how these forums function.

Ah......The Scrolling issue. I had to deal with it for a while when I got my computer back last year. And then while borrowing my father's. After trying out a few things, I figured it out. It has to do with your page break button. Some require it on, depending on your browser's settings and then the updated settings of that browser. Others require it off. For those sufferring that "slingshot" effect, go into your page break settings.

I hope this helps everyone!

I haven't received one email from the forum since this all began.  I typically average 5-10 emails per day on a slow day.  Many of my emails are not the notifications either as I have not subscribed to many threads.  Mine are admin emails that should be self generating.

This place is running slower than a one legged Tauntaun.

Pages loads are incredibly slow and sometimes time out.  ALL of my other sites are lightning fast as usual.  FX-S is the only problem I'm having.

Still not getting my 10 emails/day.  It's been months since I've gotten an email from FX.

I've had that problem for YEARS here and some of my more 'ubergeeky' fanboyish posts can be very long so this happens to me very frequently and yes its annoying since it makes 'editing' a post, adding italics, smileys etc almost impossibly unpleasant to bother with after a certain point in the post once it begins to get 'jumpy' length.

Oh and I'm on MS Tablet 2005 OS PC and using Internet Explorer 8 browser.

I encounter issues with PM and notification e-mails.
I didn't change anything in my profile but it's been several weeks (not to say months) that I didn't get even one email.
I checked my junk folder but I found nothing.

it is a bit sketchy sometimes, but normally I get them between 20 seconds and 20 minutes after the event occurs.  Except the Plecterlabs product availability thread, but no one gets that anyway.  well, hardly anyone I guess.  The notification system can't handle the amount of emails it needs to send at that point.

OK, for the Plecterlabs thread I admit it, but even for "regular" threads (like this one) I get nothing.
Any idea someone?

There is nothing you are doing wrong, and nothing further we can do other than wait for the new version to roll out. It's still getting tested, but hopefully it will resolve most forum issues.

I'm guessing the latest version of Simple Machines Free, which is what this forum runs on. We're on 1.1.11 here, the latest is 2.0.1

Anyone else experience issues getting onto the site today? I couldn't get into it several times. Time outs, server resets, etc.

I just restored my laptop and installed programs and updates, but I doubt that is the reason why.

Anytime I post or pm, if I take longer than a minute to post it gives a timeout error.  I have been cut and pasting the message then reloading the post window to paste it post it.  It works fine that way but to type a message and try to post it I don't have enough time.

Yeah that one has been happening to me too.

Another one for the iPhone users that can get quite frustrating...sometimes when refreshing, or just general browsing, the "home, help, search, profile, log out" buttons sometimes either just disappear or there will only be four of the five buttons up. Or the down arrow that hides your messages will actually be the button for home. Or there will just be random pictures that will represent those buttons or the borders for the website.

This happen to anyone else??

I've experienced something like this for the last week using the last 2 most recent Internet Explorers (I think v8 and v9?).  I go to reply, type it all up, hit post, and I get a Session Has Timed Out message.  Sometimes merely hitting backspace takes me to the replay page with what I've written still there, and I hit post and it works fine.  Other times if I just refresh the page with the timeout message on it it takes me to the thread index for the board, and I see my post is actually there.

Not a big deal, but yea, I noticed this.

It looks like your service provider put a caching proxy between the internet and your webserver and that proxy is malfunctioning. Normally they're not allowed to do that. You guys should call them and scream at them.

Not really a problem, but when I use the fun feature of changing the lightsaber at the top of the screen, lightsaber 1 and 4 are the same. Didn't know if anyone else caught this.

Is there a way to turn off the social media junk that sits in the first post of each thread? Or at least move it to be less intrusive? It kind of sits right where the post text should be, and is very disjointed...

no... it's there to get more leverage from social media for the site.
It just floats at the top of the first post of a thread. You'll get used to it. :)

I understand why its there, it would just be nice if there was a preference to turn it off if you know you're not going to use it. Could it at least go into it's own box instead of floating? Especially on mobile it ends up looking like part of the post...

Thanks

I also have long load and post times, exacerbated on a mobile device.  I only use droid based mobile devices, i.e. phone and Kindle Fire, and am unable to view most pictures posted on the forum.  Some I can see though.  I think it may have something to do with which hosting site they're on, but it only started when the forum upgraded. Hey Solan I've been having the same issue of my Kindle Fire as well for a while now.  Some pics I can see, others I can't.  Depends on the site hosting the pics I suppose.

I know my Kindle was working just fine with the updated site for the first couple of weeks or so and then it got an update.  I'm pretty sure the problem isn't with FX but whatever "fixes" they did to the updated software for the Kindle.  Hopefully they'll get it resolved cuz it's driving me nuts.

Correct here.  While the site is indeed experiencing some slight loadtime issues, the Kindle Fire is known to have an update recently that affected the viewability of alot of pics across the board and not related to any host issues FX may be experiencing.

It almost looks like it is about to freeze up each time I refresh or click into a post.

Some of it has to do with the host....  but load times are much faster this week than they were last week, after a few minor tweaks...  Still not primo, but better

Time to change hosts?

it's just another symptom of the currently loaded server.  We're looking into solutions. :)

Ok Folks...   we definitely seem to be making some improvements in load times after our little issue this past weekend.

I have also added a debug routine at the end of the page (waaaaay down at the bottom)

If you notice a slow load time on your view, please take a look at the bottom of the page
Quote
Page created in 0.131 seconds with 12 queries.

and then do me a favor...   Copy, as I just did, the load time notice and reference what page you were trying to load.
If the load time is reaching the multiple seconds, then  we know something is wrong...   If (as you see here) the server load time is in far less than a second, but you are still seeing slow load, then there is something wrong with the network between you and the server and we can take a separate look at that.

thanks Fat Ewok....   Browser should not matter.  The page load times are server side.
If you saw page load times of .1 seconds, but it was still slow to load, then it would be a definite browser-side issue.

jedicri, thanks...   I have seen a general improvement recently, which is good - but at some times, we still bog down, so I am looking into why (and if there is a consistent time that it happens)

at this time, the notification system is lowest on my priority list for "fixes". Once the system is fully optimized and stable at the new level, I will take a look at what is causing the backlog in the mail queues....

Althoughm that does raise the question:
I know that PM notifications are seriously backlogged...
Does anyone have notifications turned on for specific threads?  If so, are those notifications also delayed?
Title: Re: ISSUES WITH THE FORUM

for me the topic notifications are faster by a lot, not ever taking longer than the rest of the day and they are usually immediate (at least recently).

check your browser settings for cookies...  if you clear or do not allow cookies, then the site can not save your login...

Additionally, if you log out on ANY browser or machine, you will be logged out of ALL instances on ALL machines.

I can't recreate -- I just tried from three different devices and it maintained my login across all of them

Super weird... doesn't seem to be the browser... cookies are enabled and it doesn't clear the cookies automatically.... I'm on other forums that maintain sessions using cookies and they're working fine... so strange... worked fine until the last couple of weeks.  I assume it's me somehow as I'm the only variable here.  I'm just not sure why it's happening.

Well, first of all, the forum does not track emails... It only does what are called personal messages

Second, have you set your settings to save a copy of personal messages ?  If not, then the system will not save copies of them.
I just confirmed that it works fine for me,

Simple Machines is just a REALLY bad forum engine. Archaic database structure. Lots of basic features that are missing. Poor API support. Poor mobile support. There's so many good ones out there with much better support and a much wider install like phpBB, MyBB, or vbulletin. Are there any plans to improve this or is Simple Machines something FX Sabers is looking to stick with for a while?

To be clear, this isn't meant as me upset with the community. On the contrary, the people here have been excellent. There are years and years of great information here. The problem is it's taking forever to data-mine and actually find it. Having a wealth of information is great, but if you can't actually find it or navigate it, you might as well have none.

Simple Machines Forum is one of the BEST forum softwares out there...
it has the best security record of all of them... and almost any feature you THINK is missing can be added easily and quickly by the package manager mod system.
SMF also has a seriously impressive support community - so, I am not certain where you get the idea that other softwares have "better support" (while other softwares do also have excellent support, I am willing to compare SMF against them any day.

vbulletin is paid
phpBB, while decent, does not have the package manager -- and mods need to be manually installed by hacking the source directly.
myBB is not bad -- btu is far to simplistic, does not have the support community and does not have the extensions (mods) that SMF can do.

Oh yeah...  disclosure... I happen to be the Project Manager of the Simple Machines Forum project and the Vice President of the Simple Machines corporation. :P
(thus demonstrating the impressive support.)

Yeah, that feature is not immediately obvious.  The next version of SMF has that turned on by default. :)

No reason to be condescending. We can agree to disagree respectfully. I think it's a poor choice for all of the reasons I listed above.

Well this makes sense then why there is a bias towards it. I can now see there is no point to having a discussion on this issue and, therefore, will refrain with anymore retort.
Title: Re: ISSUES WITH THE FORUM
Post by: DARTH VADER on January 18, 2016, 10:42:24 AM
Except that your reasons which you listed are actually incorrect.

SMF does not have an archaic database structure.
SMF does not have missing features. It has a very SIMPLE feature set for INTENTIONAL reasons -- and then has mods for almost any additional feature that is desired.
SMF has perfectly fine API and SSI support (although such is not needed on this site, so that is not actually a consideration.)
SMF 2.0 (default) theme is somewhat limited in the mobile/responsive design. True...  Although there is a mod which makes the Curve theme somewhat responsive... However, this site uses a fully responsive theme -- which means that your comment on mobile support is just plain wrong.
and... as already stated... SMF's support is actually very good. (heck, this site has the PM for SMF personally providing support!)
finally... while phpBB may have a wider install base - that does not make it "better". SMF has several features that phpBB is missing (like the package manager, which is huge) and SMF definitely has a wider install base than myBB (although, once again, more != better) (and vB is paid, so that should not enter into consideration - apples to pears)

In short -- there actually is not really any bias in my defense. All of the above statements are factual... and while you can have a disagreeing opinion, your opinion doesn't change the facts.
