Title: 30A blue LED!
Post by: profezzorn on June 14, 2017, 05:03:17 PM
Ok, this just looks like FUN:
LE B P3W 01-GYHY-24-0-F00-T01 OSRAM Opto Semiconductors Inc. | Optoelectronics | (https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/osram-opto-semiconductors-inc/LE-B-P3W-01-GYHY-24-0-F00-T01/475-3342-ND/6946405)

A blue LED that can be driven directly from a li-ion battery at 30A continuous current!
With a little creative heatsink-building, it could even fit in a regular hilt. (Sideways, with a reflector cut in half in front of it to direct the light out the blade.)

Battery life will not be awesome... :)

There are other colors available as well.

So I ordered one of these.
If I disappear from the boards for a while, it's because I'm learning how to read braille.

But now I have a problem: I need a kill key or switch that can handle ~40A...

I think the solution to the switch problem is to make two separate circuits, each driving half of the LEDs on the chip.
Finding 2-pole switches that can handle 20A per pole seems to be a lot easier.
Each individual circuit will be driven by one of these: IJOY 26650 Battery 40A 4200mAh - Genuine and Tested ? Liion Wholesale Batteries (https://liionwholesale.com/collections/batteries/products/ijoy-26650-battery-40a-4200mah-genuine-and-tested?variant=30475399569) (Even so, battery life will be ~15 minutes at best...)

Now I just got to figure out a hilt and a gigantic heat sink...

I been playing with some automotive LEDs . And they are strong. Still looking for the manufacturers of them. They have some crazy heatsinks and fans. Mercedes,Audi and BMW's all have new adaptative lighting.

Yes I can attest for the Osram LEDs as we use them in my industry and you can see them from 2 miles or more if the curvature :cheesy: of the earth didn't get in the way.

Also the lens they use on the Mercedes DLR lights are silicone based . These are so clear when on the ground in direct sunlight you can't see them!

Speaking of heatsinks, wonder if one of these would be enough:

The LED module arrived today.
I tried it outside, in sunlight, and put a piece of paper over it, and it was still super bright.
(And I put a burn mark on the paper...)

Anyways, this is turning into a build thread, maybe I should move over to Saber Modifications and Customs ?

For kicks I looked up what the radiant flux on my blue-blue-white LED star might be to compare with the osram module. The highest binned Cree XP-E2 royal blue gives off ~1860 mW, and I have two, so that becomes 3720 mW or so.  The lowest binned osram module gives off 21000mW. The highest gives off 39000mW. So roughly 10x brighter.
