i'm still waiting for my PC and the ESB conversion kit from tfx studios, the Graflex vintage already arrived  8) but i will show that later  ;)

like described in the manual, i tried to use the small springs from the Graflex vintage for detailing the top focusing crystal, i ended up using some little springs out of my electronic junk
because the sprigs from the Graflex where a way too big. but it worked really nice this way!
it took me aprox. 10 hours so far, but i spent a lot of time on the focusing crystal and the mount of its brass rods. this could be a little bit tricky, but now the rods hold the
crystal nice and snug  8)

LED test ok, moving on to the battery holder section and the speaker chamber...

... next the circuitry chamber...
today the needed 4/40 thread tap arrived and with it some other things  ;D
- 6/32 drill bit and, ... wait, where is the thread tap??? it wasn't in the package, so i have to shoot tim a e-mail  :-\
- unlocked PC
- another Grips  ( actually i didn't decided yet which one to use, the grips from tfx studios are way more softer than this ones from tim, but i like it the hard way  ;) )
- and a tap handle

- accent LED optic line
... i decided not to go 1:1 with Yodas manual and gave the optic brass tube a second bend, now it fits snug to the crystal and to the upper
chamber plate  8)
on the second picture you can see that the brass tube is as long as the aluminum spacers, i shortened it a bit before mounting the LED!

... looks very nice  8) Yoda did an amazing job on  this kits, every little piece fits perfectly to the next one  :o and it looks WHAO!
again about 5 hours till here, total working hours ( without cleaning and preparing the Vintage Graflex ) 15

the next steps are to connect and a little modify the blade adapter, wire the pc and after all that i have to convert the graflex...

- completed chassis with modified blade adapter ( already wired up with the 2 switches and the LED ) and the PC  ;D

before i went on with the final assembling today, i thought it would be nice to have a second optical line to lit the clamp while the saber
is in idle mode. Yoda did that on my Graflex and i liked that kind of idle indication. also there is a lot of room left in the upper part of the chassis, so
here it goes  8)

... looks and works great.

the next days the chassis has to take place in that beauty:

but first i have to put all that parts together with the Graflex:

it worked pretty good with the dremel, and the slider fits the blade adapter perfect  8)

- chassis attached to the upper flashgun shell ( you can see the little tactile aux switch under the graflex button )
(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1110.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh444%2FEgonMcGregor%2FYoda%2520DIY%2520Graflex%2520Chassis%2520Kit%2FDSCN1489.jpg&hash=7e508a325294420bf65f7feb4138752b0400f850) (http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h444/EgonMcGregor/Yoda%20DIY%20Graflex%20Chassis%20Kit/DSCN1489.jpg)

- and here a photo with flash, you can see the slight weathering of the Graflex, this will be a nice ESB version!  :)

after installing the chassis to its final place, i made a little test run and everything worked as it should, the slider has a little less way ( up and down )
than my Yoda Graflex V, but it worked without any problems. speaker and soundsfonts work like they should, led test is ok, the only thing i didn't made so far
is the led sequencer for the bottom and top crystal leds. but the optical lines also worked fine!

Egon,

I'm glad you're writing this review :) I have already finished my chassis but I don't have a good camera to document the build. It was a fun process though. it was like building a Lego set, but with screws and glue. I don't know how Master Yoda came up with all this stuff, and then there will be upgrades later :o

Enjoy your build!

thanks Evan, maybe you could show us some pictures of your finished chassis? do you use a replica or a vintage graflex?

I am using a Parks replica. I bought some things from him a while ago and there was something that was back-ordered for over two years. I called him and he asked me if there was anything else that I would want instead, so I asked him for a Graflex. He never really asked me whether I wanted it dressed or not, he just sent me the ANH version. I kind of wanted ESB but he put the ANH grips and D-ring (not screen accurate) on it ::). He put the grips on so well and drilled holes for the D-ring, so I decided to keep it as ANH.

That must have been insanely annoying  :-\ ....Just noticed the other day you can now get them dressed, neat, but sort of takes the fun out of it. But nice, if you don't have a drill press/ printer (grip templates) to do the grips for an ESB yourself.

 Cheerios!

Yeah, I figured it would be plain and he would include the grips, D-ring and bubble strip, but whatever :D He did me a favor. The Graflex was worth more than he owed me. I say: Jeff Parks is the man!

.... like described in the manual, i tried to use the small springs from the Graflex vintage for detailing the top focusing crystal, i ended up using some little springs out of my electronic junk
because the sprigs from the Graflex where a way too big. but it worked really nice this way! .......
Egon and others reading this
just wanted to confirm which screws were too big.
The springs Mater Yoda uses are the ones that come from behind the Graflex Pins that needed to be unscrewed. They're used to make contact with the centre contact and are Silver plated.
They are tiny and smaller than the ones that you ended up using, so small that they could have fallen out when pulling the black insultator out and not noticed - OR perhaps a previous owner of your Graflex had already opened it and lost the screws before you bought it?
The springs are a snug fit over the brass rod used for holding the crystal.

Not a worry at all, yours looks great none the less.
I'm at the wiring in of the PC on mine.

maybe the last owner lost them, i carefully pulled the black insulator out of the graflex, but there where no springs :/

Very cool ;D Are you still waiting for your blade adapter to come or do you have one already? I ordered one from The Graflex Shop, but it tends to take a while for them. I have another Graflex, that was meant to be completely custom, that I am going to upgrade anyway. So, I took the blade adapter out of that one because I wasn't going to wait for TGS.

Beautiful m8, beautiful! :D

I'm very curious about how these sound, compared to , say , a inch or two of resonance. I LOVE to hear your graflex's sound compared to a MR Luke ANH or something to get a comparison. I spent a while tweaking the sound on mine to get it to desirable levels. I think I will be grabbing one from Yoda's next run. I have a video up of mine compared to a LUKE ANH, maybe you can use it to gauge a comparison m8. Keep me posted!

this "little" step need some more modifications on the graflex shell. i have to drill the holes for the grip section, and trim the slide switch to fit
the graflex blade adapter and the tiny tactile button. but after that... my first self built graflex is finished!!!

Danke! ;)

Dude, be careful when you cut that metal tab for the slider switch, I screwed mine up a little bit. Nothing I had would cut the metal, so I was going to kind of bend it back and forth. It broke off a little too high up. I ended up having to bend down the remainder with pliers and it worked out. My slider switch is a tiny bit farther up though. 8)

They sound great and are very loud even with the small resonance chamber.  Mine is powered with a CF 4.3 and its the perfect volume.  I have the ESB version with sound holes under the d ring bracket.  No issues at all with sound volume or quality. You will be pleased.  :D

                 Cheers m8!

                            Shane

They sound great and are very loud even with the small resonance chamber.  Mine is power with a CF 4.3 and its the perfect volume.  I have the ESB version with sound holes under the d ring bracket.  No issues at all wi sound volume or quality. You will be pleased.  :D

I spent quite some time tweaking mine till I was happy with the sound, It is louder then my Luke ANH at least. I wonder, how much louder is the CF vs the PC? I don't think I've read anything on that subject. I still wish it could be louder though, I find myself increasing the volume in the soundfonts I have even, Makes me wonder if I have a bum speaker. I vented the holes like you told me over a year ago when I first asked you for help, I also went and hollowed out the 2 D ring mount set screws( that made a huge difference). I also played with making the air chamber , sealed, or ported( not fully sealed behind the speaker), ported seemed to work slightly better. Think I'm straying from the subject here. haha.

Cheers! Looking forward to his next run

actually the sound chamber is sealed with the bigger plastic tube/foil Yoda includes in his kit.
as i can see so far, the soud chamber will be about half an inch, that is not too much, but should work pretty well.
if you like, i can make a sound comparison in my video with my CF5 graflex! i puttet the soundfiles from my Yoda Graflex V
on the PC card so it would be a 1:1 comparison ( the chamber in the Yoda Graflex V is a little longer because of the different
battery setup )

Of course my knowledge is based off my drilled edition chassis which is a bit different than the DIY chassis.  Although I have the 14550 battery setup that takes more space.  It's possible the resonance chamber is a bit different.  It's hard to tell from your pics and I don't have a DIY chassis to do a side by side.

the DIY chassis has about 1/8 inch  space to the bottom of the shell when attached to it ( and the graflex is closed ), my drilled quartz edt. has more than 1/4 inch.
i will try to make the soundhole setup as nearly as possible like Yoda did. but i think the CF is a way more louder than the PC.

BUMP for some little updates and Graflex Vintage photos  8)

tomorrow there a a few things left to do:
-drilling the holes in the bottom of the Graflex ( d-ring and sound holes ) and for the grips
- attaching the d-ring
- attaching the T grips
- applying the mylar tape
- refit the bunny ears
- and not to forget all the little details like the graflex pins aso.

well a lot todo for tomrrow  ;)

ps: the reason why there are no photos of the activated chassis yet is because the guy at conrad ( local electronic dealer here in austria ) gave me
3,7 lithium cells with 2200 mAh  :P didn't check that at the cash desk and i noticed that yesterday when i was trying to fire the saber up, something
sounded wrong with the pc ( my first guess ) a lot of crackeling. i checked the cells and the have too much mAh over 2 Amp. i remembered on the
descriptions in the manual: PC supports cells up to 2 Amp. so today i ordered some recharable 1750 LIon's that Yoda recommended in the DIY Kit
question thread, and a Lion recharger ( should arrive to the end of next week ).
for testing i bridged the pos. and neg. contacts of the chassis-batterie holder to a 4 AAA Batterie holder i usually use for testing purpose.
ok, more updates tomorrow!!!  :)

Hmm, sad to find out that the CF is considerably louder then the PC  :-[...... Sigh.. Cant win no matter what. haha.

This is coming together beautifully. It really does make me want to get a Yoda DIY chassis. I really would like to see EXACTLY how the aux switch mounts to the 'small slider' on the side next to the red button, the long silver part that is on the inside of the slider broke off on mine almost as soon as i got it, its kinda fragile :P. Is it necessary to have it to make Yodas aux setup work? Cheers bro, back to working on some more bases!

Obi-Shane,

I was able to bend down what was left of my tab. You just have to mount the side switch a little further up in the channel. Master Yoda supplied a side actuating tactile switch for under the slider. He said they were the last of that kind that he had, and he would supply a different kind in the future. It just gets mounted with thin double sided tape, but I had to also use some hot glue to keep it from sliding back on me. After a couple of times turning the saber on and off (that will happen ;D), the slider wouldn't contact the switch quite right and I would have to remove the chassis (which means removing the pins, glass eye and the screw) and fix the position of the switch. The side switch is kind of all trial and error to get right ;)

i had the same "problem" like Evan with the slide switch. the first time i putted together the chassis and
the upper shell, the tactile was to close to the sliding switch, so there where not enough room for it to slide.
so i sanded the blade holder a little more to get a different position for the tactile. with the last modification i
used a drop of glue to fix the switch and used some electric tape to hold it in position. and now it
works!
without a dremel it will be very hard to trim the slider to the right size, like Evan said you have to be very carefull
or otherwise it will break!

only thing i have to do tomorrow is to shorten the screws from the grip section! haven't the time today  :-\
i will post a short review and a video ( also sound comparison video of PC and CF Graflex ) in the forum gallery! but i can so for now: CF is much louder!!!

Yoda did a great job with this kit, everything was explained very clear, even the modifications that where necessary on the Graflex!
it was a great fun how things come together step by step, sometimes it was a bit tricky because a few parts are really small  :)
this will definitely not be my first and only Graflex chassis kit from Yoda!!! and i'm looking forward for his modification options  :o

Again thank you so much for putting our hobby to the next level ( like several times before  ;) )

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
parts used for the complete conversion:

. Yoda DIY Graflex Kit
- Vintage Graflex
- Seoul P4 blue LED and lens holder
- Graflex blade adapter,  Graflex pins and red button set screw from the Graflex Shop
- ESB kit from tfx studios ( card, D-ring, textured mylar tape and screws  ) mixed them with the notched grips from tcss
- extra brass tubes ( a little smaller in diameter than the one from the DIY kit ) and fiber optic
- premium speaker from tcss
- PC unlocked from tcss
- also a lot of heat shrink
- MAAS polish for cleaning up the Vintage Graflex
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

hope you liked my review of grand Master Yodas DIY Graflex Chassis Kit

thanks Evan, this is a cut down blade plug from tcss, only thing i made was cutting down the metal disk and
carefully sanded  the id of approx. 1/8 inch so that the glass eye fits.

Hey, when you glued the glass eye pieces together, did you use that cyanoacrylate stuff or something else?

yes evan, at first i just fixed the contact pin to the glass eye button/screw so that it had the right position,
after that i filled it with hot glue  ;)

Cool, I ordered a blade plug from ARKM but I'm still going to make my own. I've had this blade for years that I never use and is too long. I figure I can cut some off and make a blade plug. I'm going to get some 3/4" polycaronate and glue it inside the 1". The glass eye should fit nicely into that, I think. Now, if I could just get me a stand....

he did great work on those bases, and they have a wooden bottom!!!

i ordered a complete case from the guy in the firsts link, and it is outstanding, the quality is very good, he ships fast and the package was, well it took me
about 15 minutes to get the case out of it ( very well packaged ).

Thanks for the shot out EgonMcGregor. Yes, he was kind enough to purchase one of my first bases at around materials cost. I reluctantly sold it to him since it wasn't as perfect as I'd like, Even though he was happy with the way it looked in the first pictures I disassembled it , repainted it 2 times and polished it up a bit. Yes, I use a piece of solid Maple wood for starters. It would be cheaper and easier ( MUCH less sanding and prep work) to go with some other material such as laminated press wood or some cheap alternative, but that's just not what I want to go with. Ducos contacted me to make one for one of his build threads and I just completed it this weekend, I went ahead and made 2. One is reserved for him and I will probably be putting the other up for sale here.

Oh, and EgonMcGregor, Like we talked about, when you want a more perfect base, I'll custom build you one for a 'reveal' setup at a good price, and it will be a good 2 inches longer then the one I already sent you. I have also gotten some materials for a custom designed saber stand I will be trying out, as well as an acrylic cover. they will all have brushed aluminum and brass accents to them to compliment the bases. they look great in my head at least, lets hope they will in real life as well, haha.

Here are the ones I did this weekend after Ducos contacted me..

EDIT:  As an after thought, Egon, were you thinking of installing screws for the upper grip section? I'm kinda diggin that look, and it prevents your grips from creeping on you. Just trying to locate the perfect screws for it myself as i dont want to go with phillips heads.

Egon, that stand on ebay is like $90 and the shipping is $44 :o That's more than I paid for my Graflex. I was trying to get one from ArkaiHalon for $20. The problem is that he's not getting back to me. I was also hoping that Master Yoda would sell his stands(and blade plugs), or at least make them available to those who get the DIY chassis ;)

Obi-Shane, those are very nice :) Do they come with arms?

Cheerios!

EDIT:  As an after thought, Egon, were you thinking of installing screws for the upper grip section? I'm kinda diggin that look, and it prevents your grips from creeping on you. Just trying to locate the perfect screws for it myself as i dont want to go with phillips heads.

not for this graflex, this is built as a wampa cave version, it hase the spange behind the graflex button and will not have additional screws in the grips
like the dagobah version ;-)
during the chassis building process i thought it would be nice to have another version of lukes lightsaber on the shelf, maybe i will convert my parks replica to a esb/stunt version with only the necessary parts installed to it ( PC, batterie pack, speaker ). maybe later this year...  ;)

and Evan, don't forget that these are complete cases! sure they are a little bit pricy but
came out really nice ;-)

Oh, it's nice, don't get me wrong. I am unemployed at the moment and I can't spend that much on a stand. I bought the DIY kit with money I had saved for over two years just for that purpose. I can justify a $20 or so Halon stand though 8)

you can't go wrong with a custom stand from ArkaiHalon, i contacted him a few weeks ago and
waited 2 weeks for a reply. he told me that he is very sorry about the delay and its because he is
very busy at the moment. be sure, he will reply!  ;)

I'm sure he will. I've heard nothing but good things about him. I'm sure his whole life isn't just to make $20-$60 saber stands for people :)

If your handy with some tools I would recommend possibly making your own? It's quite fun and rewarding, such as building your own DIY chassis or Graflex. After doing my Graflex and being unable to find an adequate base/stand/case combo I decided to just build everything myself. It is a tad time consuming though :D

I thought that they (the acrylic ones anyway) had to be laser cut. Like, I could go to Home Depot and get a sheet of acrylic, but I wouldn't know how to cut it other than by laser :-\

Easy peasy actually. Just get a "L" square and measure the peices yourself for straight lines. and use a zacto knife or sheet metal/ acrylic score tool. and score the lines then snap em. this method is for larger peices, then sand and polish the edges yourself. Small peices i would just use a rotary tool, then sand/ wet sand then polish them. materials are dirt cheap for small stands, its just takes time to make em. I'm doing one this week and will have it complete with any luck by the end of this weekend

Well done Egon McGregor ;D
I am very pleased to see your progress and how everything come together for you as well as your ability to modify what you needed to
and the kits ability to adapt to those needs.

Thank you so much for your compliments on the kit and manual and I'm glad they helped you manage to convert your own Graflex.
IT came out Great and I hope you are enjoying and learned from it 8)

Something tells me you have deep pockets Egon,  ;D. I too am looking forward to his next run. I wonder by any chance, how difficult it would be to install a slightly larger speaker to the end of the chassis. With a new line of speakers on the market soon, 2W 4/8 Ohm speakers, I wonder how hard it will be to modify one of these chassis to fit the speaker. JQ has a new line of speakers in the works, and this is the route I think I'll try and go if its possible to fit them on the DIY Yoda chassis.

not so deep like they should be for that hobby  ;) i've seen the speaker prototype from jq, and if they have the same diameter like the premium speakers from tcss, the only thing we need is the REAL CR123 battery setup from Yoda, that will give us the necessary space for mounting a deeper speaker. by the way, those speakers
sound awsome, deep in bass and rich in the high frequency tones!!!
