The prop they used in ANH and ESB was lost, so they had to build a new one. And since the flashgun they used for the other prop wasn't in production anymore, they came up with something entirely different.

Lol i can Tell you what happened to the ESB  Prop they used in the movies. They like sold it for $200,000 those Cantina rats!
