10W ledengin and MR s/board off 1500mA puck?
« on: January 29, 2010, 08:56:16 AM »
In the absence of an ample number of superior quality soundboards to go round would it be possible for me to use a MR board for sound only and run a 10w Ledengin in parallel from the same source? i.e. 1500mA buck puck or similar. Any info would be greatly appreciated as I am just starting to get the ball rolling on my first custom, Cheers!

A 5w ledengin can be driven by a MR board

also the 10W can't be driven at 1500mA but the 5w can  ;)

Cheers Kota but if i can run both in parallel it gives me greater scope regarding choice of LED and i suppose soundboard?

I would go with the 5W and an MR board

The board will only handle 6v Max
The 10W will need 8v-14v depending on the color you choose and each die(there are 4) will want 1000ma to run at optimal conditions.

You can overdrive the 10Ws, we have driven them at 1300 no problem.  However, I do not know of a 1500 ma buck puck.  There is a 1000 and a 700.  People sometimes use two 700s. It is the voltage requirements that are the problem.  You are looking at anywhere from 12-19V to properly run them.  You'd have to have a very serious voltage regulator heatsink setup or the MR board will fry.

EDIT: You beat me bounty hunter.  I'll get you next time ;)

Cheers for the info guys. Buck puck was just an example, it is the driver below or similar i was hoping to use:-

Electronics is a bit lower voltage than i'm used to so its not really my thing (he says stating the blindingly obvious) I know a man who can but don't go back to work until Wednesday so trying to hoover up as much info from you guys as I can. If you listen carefully you can probably hear my brain frying  ???

Those aren't 1500 either ;)  Nice find though.  I might try some of those 1.2s :D

haha I knew that would come back and bite me (i almost edited) but there are others which are pcb mounted and some ridiculous amperages, ridiculous i tell you! So could i power the MR soundboard direct from the batteries and parallel the driver? (sizzlesizzlesizzle)

What COLOR are you going to use? LE10W LEDs vary greatly in voltage requirements, which will impact my recommended setup.

In any case, with an MR board you will definitely need a hybrid setup of some sort. For example, I have setup an MR via a single 3.7V 14500 cell, with two more cells in a separate series circuit plus 1A buck. Both circuits were closed via a DPDT switch. Upon startup, two dice of a Green LE10W received 1A from the buck, and a third dice received 1A from the MR board. The four die was not wired, but in the case of the LE10W Green, it didn't matter because it was STILL noticeably brighter than a LuxV Green, plus I had MR sound (LuxVs cannot be run off an MR board normally, due to the LED's high voltage requirements). '

It's a double positive. I discuss it in more detail in the "LedEngin Discussion Thread".

Cheers Goodman your name is apt indeed. I found that thread after i started this one.  :o

I had the green in mind. Could i use a 1200/1500mA driver and have 3 dies connected to that with the 4th from the MR board? Like i said up there^^ if it was a few thousand volts higher i'd be giving advice rather than seeking it hahaha

Yes, you could run three of the dice off of a 1A buck (or however you plan on getting 1.2-1.5A) and an 11.1V li-ion pack (three 3.7V...14500 or 14650 size).  Wire the fourth dice off its own 3.7V li-ion cell, driven by the MR board.
