Thermal Detonator mk1
« on: October 30, 2017, 08:19:32 PM »

I'm moving at the end of the month and I realized I wasn't going to be able to finish any sabers, so I decided to bang out a thermal detonator.  This is 3D printed at home from an existing model, with custom electronics and coding.  Even though this is totally functional and looks pretty good, I consider this to be in a work in progress or perhaps a beta version. I'll be making a new version using my own model and some added features next year once I'm settled in my new home and new work space!

Thank you! Sanding is the order of the day! The finishing was the real fun part, I experimented with some new (to me) techniques and I'm really happy with how it worked out.  I have had a hard time taking decent photos, but the aging and dirt are the parts that show up the poorest and look the best in person.

This is amazing, so far certainly the most detailed thermal detonator model I've seen! Well done Jason, the sounds and lights turned out excellently too! You are turning into - or already are - a true 3D artist! Ever considered giving lessons? I would be interested  :azn: Xmas is coming and I plan to persuade my family to give me a 3D printer.

Thanks guys! I was originally planning not to post until my next version is done.  I'm glad I did because all of the feed back is very encouraging.

Thank you! 18 months ago I didn't do any of this stuff, other than make things like the odd costume, furniture or website.  Designing models and having them printed was pretty cool, but the immediacy of being able to design something and have it exist in the world a few hours later is really a thrill.  I nearly don't know how I could have lived without it.  I'm a "learning by doing" type of person when it comes to this stuff, and I always recommend to people to start with a specific project in mind.  Make something specific and useful.  Work on it as often as possible, try different things, and be willing to start over.  Eventually you'll have learned quite a bit and you'll have something to be proud of.  The next step is to make something else!

Not to get ahead of myself, but I look forward to sharing the next version and I am considering my options.
