So, I've picked out my post-finals project
« on: December 07, 2013, 11:15:30 AM »
Usually, when finals are over, I play xbox for a few days, then jump right in to my build log.  Well, this time, I've decided to add in a fun project for myself while I have the spare time.  I picked a pretty good one too.  It will take a maximum of 4 hours and probably $20, but it's gonna make one of the props I already own look 10 times cooler when on display.

Info about the project:

It's going to be made out of concrete.
The model is "to scale", but obviously not 1:1 given the dimensions on the drawing.
the drawing shows specifications for a wooden mold that the concrete will be poured into.
One key feature of the mold is left out of the model, but this item would be totally useless without it.
The prop that this goes with is from a videogame, and only chosen heroes who have endured hundreds of hours of gameplay on the wii will even have a chance to know what this is for.

Anyone wanna take a guess what it will be?

I have no idea, but I would love to see what it is. My only guess would be something related to No More Heroes, given how you worded the last hint.

My guess:

Welcome to saber building. You've taken your first step into a larger world!

yep, you nailed it.

I was surprised to find that there are no pictures of that shot from the twilight princess game, which I'm basing mine off of, but watching the cutscene again, there isn't even a good shot of it.  I was able to blow up one shot and get a scale for the length of the top and an angle, so I pretty much just guessed the height and depth.  Plus, if it's too tall or too short, I can always pour a deeper or shallower part.

I'm still undecided on whether or not I'm gonna try to match that color, two tone, trim, etc. I just want the right shape.

I'm also gonna make a cool aluminum piece that that will go around where the blade inserts into the pedestal.  I got the idea somewhere on the rpf, but I'm really glad I decided to re-watch the cutscene again rather than completely basing my build off of someone else's.  His was completely wrong for this version of the master sword.

Well, I figure around 25-40 pounds tops, and yep, sword will be totally removable.  In the first pic, you can already see the raw blade tip holder I made.  I didn't clean it up yet, but it does hold the blade firmly in place (no wobble or chance of sitting at an off angle), so I'll just leave a hole for it in the concrete with a raised piece in the mold and then secure the blade holder into the pedestal after the fact to be absolutely sure it's straight.   Then the aluminum piece will cover it (sort of looks like an exaggerated coin slot).

This is pretty sweet! I have a replica Master Sword as well, I think it would be cool to have a display pedestal for it.  8)

you should rig it to play music or the "link finds" tune when the sword is pulled out

That is a very worthwhile project. I also believe it will the first of its kind. Extra props for originality.
