Title: Mace FX impressions
Post by: Kyp Durron on March 21, 2006, 07:48:32 PM
Well, I finally received the Mace FX that I won Friday night back in February during the MR Trivia game.  ;D

The Hilt :

Like others have said, this has got to be THE prettiest hilt MR has ever done. Just the right amount of BLING, without going over the top. It makes you want to take a cloth to it and polish it up every time you put it down, lol.

As far as the size is concerned, I really can't understand why people complain about it's size, I have small hands and I think this is one of the most comfortable sabers I have held yet. But then again, I can handle my Luke ESB just fine so that might have a little to do with it.  :P The rubber grips were an excellent touch, and in my honest opinion, the grips on the Anakin ROTS, Luke ESB, and both Vaders should have had the same rubber texture. But that's just my opinion. Definitely one of the best looking and feeling hilts in the MR line.

The Blade :

Now I have heard that the AOTC version wasn't that good of a purple color, but this one MR did pretty xxx good on considering it doesn't even have purple LED's in the blade. The only down side to it is the red lines on either side of the blade, but I can overlook that because the splotches that seem to plague most if not just about all of the MR line is hardly noticeable on this example that I have.

I really love the blade because of it's uniqueness as it's the only purple blade in the MR line and the only purple saber in the SW movies, period.

The Sound :

They say that they made the sound louder on this version V.S. the AOTC and I cannot dissagree. It is easily as loud as the Luke ROTJ and Anakin ROTS.  8)

The blade motion sounds are overly sensitive, in my opinion. The slightest movement sets it off, and it shouldn't be that way.  In contrast, it seems to take a bit more to set off the clash sounds than the other sabers I have. Why this is, I am not sure. It may just be mine, or perhaps it is common on this version.

All in all, I am very pleased with this saber and I love swinging it around in the living room with the lights off. When I look at it in the mirror, it looks very real which is really cool.

Obviously, I can't beat what I paid for it, which is NOTHING since I won this from the MR trivia, but I would gladly have paid the $100+ price tag, and I can say it's worth what they are asking for it.

If you can get one, then by all means, get yourself one before they become scarce. This saber belongs in ANY StarWars collection.  :)

I would also like to point out that there is absolutely NO dark spots on this blade what-so-ever. Something that I forgot to mention in my original post. Is anyone else's Mace ROTS this way, or do I happen to have an uber-rare example?  ???

I know, the only thing that is there is the typical red lines on the sides, but they aren't that bad.

And NO typical dark spot from where the two boards are supposed to be soldered together.  ;D

Needless to say, it is my most flawless saber and my favorite for that reason.  :) 8)

no- none of my sabers have spots besides teh anakin -a faint one in the middle that i think they all have from the seperation of the LED boards in the pole..
besides that my Luke Mace and Vader are all crystal...
then again i dont duel with my sabers AT ALL....never have so that may be why also

Yeah, my Luke ROTJ is much better since I got all good batteries for it, and my used Vader ESB is crystal like the Mace except for the flickering LED that lights up and goes dark...hopefully MR will send me another one.

yeah true...battery issues account for a lot of the 'spotty' issues

Well are the ones that don't have spots ROTS or AOTC?

Neither of the Mace (AOTC or ROTS) have highly visible dark spots due to the extra diffuser. It's still there, just not a prevalent due to this factor. :)

Every FX-saber has a dark spot right in the center of the blade. It is where the 2 strips of LED's are soldered together. Although this is more visible on some sabers then others.

I was on the fence about getting this saber... Due to finances and that I had a Luke Jedi (2nd Gen), Luke ESB, and Vader ANH (1st Version). Then I saw that they were re-releasing the new version of the Mace. I went to EB (I think that was the store that was selling the newer ones, or GameStop... can't remember now). Anyway, they had three left, and I paced back and forth wondering if I should get it. I knew that there were improvements, and I had enough money, so I went ahead and bought one.

That was the longest ride home. I thought I made the biggest mistake, the wife would beat me with it, it would not live up to expectations, a big bill would arrive in the mail, etc.

I took it out and powered it up and she thought it was the best one I had. Loved the hilt and the color. I was never so relieved. The color was as clear, bright and even as all the ones I own. (Which, I should point out, all have different variances of distribution through the blades depending on lighting and how hard you really look at it, as you are all aware of. I just thought it was a great color and great sound. A very happy spontaneous purchase.

My Mace was my first FX.   I got it for fathers day this year after my wife got sick of me waffling over if I should spend money and get  a FX or not.  I don't have a noticable dark spot in my blade, but I don't have the red lines i read about here either.  This is the RoTS Mace FX, but I still think my blade is more of a lavender/blue then a true purple.

Not complaining.  I am going to do a full review of my collected items shortly, if people can stand another review!
