Title: LDM's Philanthropy contest!
Post by: GENERAL GRIEVOUS on November 14, 2008, 12:48:48 AM
Okay, here is the deal.  I started this contest on another forum, but I don't want to limit the spread of good will!  Post stories here of selfless things that you have done for others.  It must be something done simply out of respect for your fellow man!  Don't be modest.  It can be the simplest of things as long as it is heartfelt.

This is indeed a contest (unless the Big Bosses tell me otherwise).

Here are the rules:

0.  Post your entries in this thread.
1.  LDM is the one and only Judge.  Rule Change---I will throw all qualified entrant's names into a hat and draw a winner!  There should be no value judgement on philanthropy!
2.  Don't make stuff up. (this is serious!)
3.  The contest will run until January 1st, 2009
4.  Enter as many times as you like, but each entry must represent a separate act of philanthropy.
5.  Philanthropic acts aimed solely at winning this contest WILL be considered.  (afterall, a good act is a good act!)
6.  Anyone who would like to contribute to the prize list must PM me before posting their idea.
7.  The prize will be awarded to the person who meets certain (secret) criteria, but I have outlined the basics for you!
8.  The prize will be sent to you not later than one month following the last day of the contest.
9.  You must be a member of Judgesabersmith.com, Fx-Sabers.com, or TCSS and in good standing at the time of contest close to be eligible!
10. The winner (one and only one) will be announced in this thread not later than 01-04-09 and can come from either site where it is running concurrently

And now for the prize:

It will be a custom LDM saber with MR sound (donated by darth_call), with input from you!  (You get to pick the color of LED and maybe a few small details)  This saber will be free, gratis, cost you no cheese, no shipping, no handling, no partridge in a pear tree.  The stunt will be MR-based, but certainly unique!

Registered Contestants:

1.  RogueJedi
2.  Darth Eugaltsh
3.  Darth Talos
4.  LUKE SKYWALKER
5.  Master Jedye
6.  Kyuubi
7.  darth_call
8.  Romulus
9.  Je-Rel Drood
10. Shadeslinger
11. darthtater
12. WEDGE ANTILLES
13. DarthCaden
14. Darth Kaos

can we enter someone's name?  There's someone I would like to nominate because of what was done for me.

Also, due to his modest nature, do I have to post my entry? Could I just PM it to you?

Yes, PM me his name and he will be entered!  If you could post what he did (no name needed) that would be awesome (but not required!)  This "contest" is about doing good things for others after all!

well, i had a post already made, but my internet droped and i had to retype it so...

i had once been in D.C. airport, going to Buenos Aries, and i had been nearly dying to have a digital suduko game w/ alot of stuff i liked on it, but my mom and dad said not to them buying it for me and me paying for it myself.  so, i had gone to the Mc. Donalds there with my dad, and the woman in front of me was digging through her wallet and dropped a 20 on the ground, just enough to pay for the puzzle game, but instead of pocketing the bill i went and caught up with the woman and gave her the money back.

efter that, i had felt real great, and i had done more good things in my futer, i'll save those for later/....

That was very noble and kind of you, darth eugaltsh.  There are definitely people out there who would have taken that $20 and ran.

But the way I see it, giving back the money in these situations is the ONLY course of action to take.  ;)

I think I will throw my hat into this. ;)
About 4 months ago, I found out an elderly friend of mine (actually my former nanny) was moving out of her apartment that she has lived in for a long time. Lousy neighbors and a better deal opened up so she decided to move. Anyways, my mother mentioned to me in passing that she was moving into a new apartment. Knowing that she doesn't have the best knees in the world and she doesn't have the money to pay for a mover, I decided to abandon my Saturday plans to go and help her. So it was me, her live in partner, Dennis, and the father of the kids she watches now. Unforunately dennis and the father had to leave and I finished the move for her. Took about 6 hours but it was worth it in every way. For once my tank of a car actually came in handy :D. I actually saw her on Saturday for the first time in a few months and I took her to lunch and then we went and enjoyed the new James Bond, on me. ;)

dang, that was pretty nice of you, she deserves to have you ;D

ok, for my second act i will, umm, just say it... ;D....

a couple weeks ago, my sister's truck got broken into, and they stole her gps.  now normally someone would just shrug it off, file the report and get the car fixed, but i knew how much she relied on her gps, soooooo.... i had my grandma take me out and i made a withdrawl from my bank account, next thing you know my sis has a bigger (literally) and better GPS system to go with the fixed windows my mom paid for since my  sis can barely pay for the car itself... ;D

but Rouge's is better :-\

oh why not, Darth Thalos has done some things out of kindness as well.

It was back in March of this year.

I was at McDonalds with my band mates and in front of us a lady, and her three kids had just got done ordering for them and when the woman began digging for money in her purse she began to become frantic.  At first I didn't think anything of it, but then I looked closer at her kids, who almost looked skin and bone, including the baby, and her boys were wearing some pretty old clothes, that didn't seem to exactly fit them.  I shook it off and then looked at the mother again.  I started feeling like my stomach was twisting into a knot.  God I remember that feeling pretty well.  I shook my head and just walked up to the register, and put my hand on the mother's shoulder and told the cashier, I will cover her and handed the cashier my deibt card to swipe.  I remember the look of shock on her face.  She thanked me and walked away with her kids.  Later she approached me and my friends as we were eating and she thanked me and her two boys did also, as her daughter was still an infant.  She tried to pay me back, but I refused her money saying "I can't accept that ma'am, you need it more than I do."  she smiled, nodded and left. I felt really great that day.  Those are the type of memories I should keep in my head more often.  Instead of the bad ones that have happened lately.

What a great idea LDM.  These are the types of things people need to think of more often than all the bad stuff we usually poison our brains with.  When we hear encouraging stories like these it puts us in the mindset to help others.  Many times we don't see people we can help simply because we are not looking.

OK, I'll throw my name in the hat but my saber will go to someone I have been wanting to give a saber too that can't afford one this Christmas.  ;)

For over 8 years I have sent money to support a little girl living in the Dominican Republic that is extremely poor.  My wife and I have also given up 3 weeks of our vacation and the money to go on a vacation to travel down to the DR and do service projects like help build her school.  I have lugged, cinder blocks, bags of cement, gravel, sand, water, and wood up 3-4 stories where the workers needed it.  I busted old cement blocks to make filler.(Rarely did I ever come home without blisters all over my hands)  I also did clown shows in the street and the school gym for all the kids.  I road a unicycle, juggled, did silly tricks and magic tricks.  We also have given money on one time occasions to purchase things like desks, chairs, computers, and other school supplies.

I have also done the money give back when I see someone drop it.  I have found things like water skiis, tubes, kneeboards, rafts that I have always taken the extra effort to find the owner.  Most recently I got a DR Pepper out of a soda machine at a hotel.  When 2 of them came out I went down to the front desk to give the other one back.

I spent about a half hour one day arguing with Home Depot about how they made a mistake and didn't charge me for items I bought.  In the end they finally got it through their heads that I owed them about $200.  Frustrating.

I chased down my neighbor one morning when I saw her go past my house with an almost flat tire.  We got her back to my house where I filled it with air.

I sat on the train platform in Atlanta with a homeless man as he ate all my food I had bought for my flight home.

There are other homeless stories like the time I passed a homeless man in Boston on a freezing winter day.  I was so convicted when I was eating my own lunch I bought him a lunch and walked about a mile back to where he was to give it to him.

I sent a box of SW toys and collectibles to a friend that was going through a tough time and needed a little pick me up.

I sent an MR FX Ani to a friend that was going through a very difficult time also.  Later I gave him and his kids the pick of a huge lot of SW figures and collectibles before I Ebayed them.

I secretly sent a little girl a whole bunch of supplies for making bracelets.  She was making them to raise support for people in China.  I knew she would run out of supplies so I loaded her up and stuffed them in her mailbox.  The times people don't know you helped them are always the best as you can't get credit but you get to secretly watch how happy you made them feel.

There is always someone that needs help.  It is up to us to see the need and fill it. ;)

This is what life is all about.  It's not about us but how we can help those less fortunate.  Kind of reminds me of my favorite Spiderman quote, which I will now butcher.  "With much power comes great responsibility."  When we have been given much, much will be required.  How can we have so much and then pass someone in need without helping them?  Besides making us feel good it is the right thing to do.

what I did, doesn't seem like much compared to all what you have done.  I felt good though, helping a family that needed to eat.  I once used to work at Wal-mart in electronics as a senior in high school.  This little boy about 7 or 8 was seperated from his family.  so I decided to stay with him until his family could return.  come to find out, they had left, not knowing that they left their son.  I stayted with him for about 4 hours.  That kid was cool, loved star wars too.  Made me think about having a kid one day...awkward.

Don't forget it is not quantity but quality.  If your heart is not in it, it's good but not as if you meant it.

Also I could be Bill Gates giving away $100,000,000 which would not be much of my overall wealth. When on the other hand someone say in highschool that might have $20 to their name buys a lady and her kids lunch at MCD's lunch.  Who did better in this case?   I would say the guy that gave away all he had.  ;)

Very good Luke, and well said.

If people would do things for stangers more often, ....even small uneventful things, the world would be a better place.

Sometimes doing something right means sacrificing something on your part, ... but isn't it worth it. To know you have made a difference, ...whether big or small to someone else.

On a side note, ...I know this would be pointless as you make a saber for u anytime you want, ...but LDM should be nominated for having this topic, ..stretching across mutiple forums. Very good idea LDM,    thank you!!

LDM...I see what you there. lol
As I'm going through a list of things to post, it dawned on me how many good things people do, for no reason other than to help others.  My thoughts then moved to all the charitable things people have done me.  So it's certainly a two way street.  Higher thought and pose-able thumbs aren’t what made us the top species (though it probably didn't hurt).

I'm in the hospitality industry so I get paid for what I do.  BUT...that being said, it does take a certain type of individual (for better and worse) to do it.
But actually, my fondest thoughts throughout this topic goes back to my Army days.  We were deployed to Cuba, helping the Haitians refugees and the acts of kindness I saw from my fellow soldiers were indescribable.  Most of the refugees were children...some were even children that we had tended to back in Hatai only 7 months before.  Other company's (Medics, Infantryman, Field Artillery, and yes...even other branches...Air Force and Navy) had one simple desire...Make life easier for people, regardless of race, creed, color or religion.  The contagiousness of goodwill started long before I landed in Cuba so I can't take any credit.  I wonder how many other un-told stories there are...especially from today's miliary forces serving us oversees.  I just wanted others to hear this story.
Well done, Doctor!

I remember when I was in the hospital back during the summer before my sophomore year.  I was in a motocross accident, dislocated my right wrist and right shoulder, broke my left ankle.  There was one nurse, who never smiled, and never would say a word.  So one day while she was in my room, I asked her if she was alright.  She grinned and said she wished.  So, I replied, what's wrong.  Before long she was just talking on and on about how hard things are for her.  she would interupt herself and say that I was just a kid and didn't need to be troubled with her problems.  Only thing I could say was, hey lady, I am in a hospital bed, talking and listening to a cute nurse, who I just so happen trying to be helping here."  She laughed and said thank you, and that I was too young.  But after that, she was pretty happy to come in and check on me.  So out of my suffering, I showed some kindness, and made somebody else feel better about themselves.

Can we enter things that worked out for us in the end? If so, there's the story about my current girlfriend... but I've got three things. None of them really compare to Luke's, but I like feeling like I did something good.

-First, in high school... I really liked this girl. I won't say her name, but I had gotten to know her and she seemed really cool. I was working up to asking her out when I find that my friend liked her. I knew she was a bit interested in both of us, and didn't tell my friend how I felt about her. I backed off, letting my friend ask her out first. Unfortunately, they didn't get too far... since a few weeks later, she was all over one of my other friends. I tried to help my buddy out, but in the end my efforts were in vain.

-Second... My current girlfriend has been in a lot of bad relationships in the past. And when she is with someone that she has good memories with, she thinks the good always outweigh the bad. I agree with her, but her last boyfriend was a total a**. He would get angry at her for no reason and everything. I really liked her, and I didn't want to see her hurt anymore. During one of their weekly break-ups, I asked her if she wanted to be with me. We had already been really close friends for about six months, and we even considered each other best friends.

She agreed, but within a month... guess who comes back claiming to be a changed man? Her ex... despite my advice and caring for her, she still talks to him and eventually breaks up with me to go back to him. I argued for a while, but then I thought that if he really was changed, then he could make her happy. I let her go, because no matter what happens to me, I want her to be happy. Fortunately for me, he was only acting like he had changed to get me out of the picture and quickly went back to his old ways... She realized that I had always been there for her even when she didn't love me and finally broke up with him to come back to me. We've been together for almost a year now... and I gotta say, it's been awesome.

-Third... Rather than buying a CF 4.1 along with several other things I wanted to get myself (a car, a new computer, a Phantom, X-box Live, several video games) I spent ALL of my money on my family for Christmas. A $300 KitchenAid mixer for my mom (she's wanted one for years), an $80 jacket for my dad, a Wii for my brother and sister, and a Light Manticore for my girlfriend (WOOT for girls who want SW stuff for Christmas). And with my crappy job, my credit card won't be paid off for quite a while...

Once again, I don't consider myself a good person at all. I don't really have anything to give or even offer people in need, but when an opportunity comes, I try to do the right thing. If these don't really qualify, that's ok. I enjoy sharing my experiences with you kind people.  :D

Yes GOAT he is. :D  Number one great guy.  I used to race a Honda 250XR.  ;)  Paid for it by cleaning toilets at my highschool after school.

That will be fine.  Whoever wins may do with the saber as they choose!  I have some exciting news.  The saber will now be a full FX saber.  Darth_call has donated a 616 soundboard to the project so the prize just became that much more sweet!

Oh awesome! I would chip in for the prize too if I had any money. LOL

LOL, no one worry if you can't "donate" to the prize package!  I don't expect anyone to.  darth_call just wanted to contribute because he was able, just like I am contributing because I am able.  Everyone else, just keep posting positive stories and keep the good karma flowing!

Just so I can have my name in green text, I'll share something not quite as extravagant as the others;

I was hanging around at local pool and most people were leaving/packing up when a kid dropped some towels. Bending over to pick them up, a PSP slid out of his backpack and plopped into the 12ft end. The kid who seemingly didn't notice continued to leave the pool. Then I say to myself "What the hey." So then I dive in to get it and I go over to his house to explain to his parents what the deal with his PSP is. I end up taking it to my house and going through all the reasonable methods to drying it, and after letting it sit for that night and a full day after doing everything, I try to turn it on and the red screen pops up with options to do a bunch of stuff.Cool deal. I take it over to their house and give it to the parents, and he never knows anything happened.

I don't think it is a matter of anyone not wanting it.  You started a list of people that go out of their way to help others.  I already have 2 sabers and in my case know of a few well deserving people that would appreciate it more than me.

Didn't want you thinking we weren't greatful.  ;)

I'm sure we're all grateful, I'd enter in myself, except that I'm not sure what story I'd give - I mostly do the small everyday things like donate blood, food, and blankets/scarves/hats/etc, or "accidentally" order too many pizzas when I go over to my (laid off) friend's house.

That's why I entered my friend in my place.  If he wins, he gets a thank you that I could never give him.  Honestly though, his preferred method of repayment for his good deeds is to "pay it forward", so he might just turn around and donate the saber anyway!  (if he can bear to part with it, of course...)

Everyone!  I did not think anyone was being ungrateful at all, but I had a few folks ask me if it could be donated to charity if they win and I thought that idea was perfectly adherent to the pay it forward spirit of this "contest".  It won't hurt my feelings in any way if the winner decides to donate it!  I am already donating two customs to charity this year so I know first hand how good it feels to have your work bring joy to others or to those in need!  Keep on posting those great stories and Je-Rel, I would post something if I were you!  It won't hurt and may make someone very happy this Christmas/New year's season! ;D

Wracked my brains out, and couldn't think of a single thing I've done!  So, I'm going to list a whole bunch of things I do on a daily or regular basis, and hopefully they'll accumulate into an entry!

(um does nominating my friend in the first place count as a charitable act?)

 - I give blood every 3 months even though I'm afraid of needles.
 - I crochet scarves and hats for the needy - working on a blanket, but they take longer
 - I donate to the local food pantries
 - I take personal days from work to volunteer in their community outreach programs

Thought of one!

(way back before cell phones were prevalent, we're talking late 90s) I was driving along the highway and saw this older couple dressed up all fancy pulled over on the side of the road.  I pulled over and found that they had called a tow truck, but waited with them anyway.  When the tow truck driver got there, he said the car was just overheated and needed some water.  I drove the man to a gas station, bought a couple bottles of water for them, and then put the water where the driver told us to put it (didn't want him to get his clothes all messy).  They tried to give me money for my trouble, but told them not to even think about it, and drove away.

But I don't know if this should count, because my kindness was repaid.  About 5 years later, I was the one on the side of the road, and some kind stranger gave me a ride to a gas station.  ON TOP OF THAT, a couple (yet more strangers) saw me get into that person's car, and followed us to make sure I wasn't kidnapped or anything.

So, uh, could my entry be me nominating my friend?

Well, since it worked once before, I think I'm going to nominate a proxy of your choosing, LDM.

I would love to nominate you just for having the contest, but some people might throw around words like ethics, and rigging and stuff like that. (see, everyone said that you SHOULD be in the contest, I'm actually putting you in it.)  SOOOO....

Pick somone to stand in your stead or throw your own hat in the ring and have some innocent bystander pick the name out! :D

Seriously. 8)

Well, I recently won an Xbox 360 at work thru a charity raffle w/ the United Way. I already have one and was going to take the cash value, but my younger brother has been wanting one of these for awhile so I gave it to him free of charge. Granted he's family, not a complete stranger, but I felt pretty good about it. :)

And btw, it's really nice of all the people involved in starting this contest to do it. Proving that this is still one of the friendliest forums I go to. 8)

I just feel greedy continually adding my name into the hat.  I do stuff, like I'm buying toys for kids currently in DYFS (department of youth and family services) for a program that my company is sponsoring, but I don't want to be here every week saying, "Look what I did!"  It kinda misses the meaning, IMO.

Ok, here goes. I worked night shift delivering auto parts in Seattle Washington about 10 years back.  So it's like 3am in winter and i see this homeless lady walkinng around with a shopping cart. I casually say hello as i go bye. Upon returning fro the business i noticed she wasnt really wearing anything substantial for clothing( tee shirt and baggy pants with a coat like 3 sizes too small). Well, after talking with her for a few minutes i ended up letting her have my gortex jacket,(which was like a sleeping bag for that poor woman), half a pizza i had ordered earlier, my gloves, and a scarf my now wife knitted me(she thinks i lost it). And ya know what? That was one of the best feelings i've ever experienced. It cost me very little to make all the difference in the world to another human being.

my next door neighbor died a few years ago and left behind a wife with teenaged kids.  the kids all moved out and she was living there by herself.  last year she had a tree removal company come in, to remove 4 massive pines about 60-80 feet each from her front yard.  but instead of actually "removing" them, they cut the trees up into 18-inch sections and left her yard covered in 'un-cut' firewood. and I mean literally "covered". every square inch. I drove up and she was out there by herself wading through a sea of wood, struggling with these logs, trying to move them, one by one, into a pile in her her back yard.  (she's probably 5'6" and 140lbs. and each 'chunk' of wood was 18-inches x the diameter of the tree). she could barely even move ONE of these things. and there was probably 100 pieces lying around.  after about five minutes of watching her struggle I went out and told her "I can't watch you do this by yourself" so I pitched in and started heaving the logs over the fence 'basketball style' into her back yard (pushing from the shoulder like a shot-put). after about two hours I saw a truck pull up and these 4 burly biker-types got out (friends of her late-husband, come to help) but by then all the heavy work was already done and I had already gone back to my house.  I heard her joking that she had done it "all by herself" --> she beamed as they marveled at her independence ;)

About two years ago we were at the Charlotte Autofair in NC. While walking up and down the rows, I saw a piece of green paper blow out of a man's van. Picking it up, I handed it to the man without even looking at the bill. He saad thanks and I started to walk off. He called me back seconds later and told me he owed me a huge favor. The bill i had picked up, was a $100 one. I felt so good after I returned it.  8)

Edit: Here's another one: We have lunch in seperate periods. (1st, 2nd, etc.) There is a group of kids in my lunch period that no one likes because they are a little strange. I talk to them sometimes and on this particular day, one of them needed some lunch money. I had some left over from that day, so I gave it to him. It was just enough so that he could buy his lunch. Once again, I felt really good.

1. Help out my not so nice classmates with their work (tutor, not cheat) ;D
2. I give pencils, paper, pens, etc. to whomever may need them
3. I stay and help the woodshop teacher clean up after class sometimes

I am blessed with some intelligence and the ability to help others. What kind of slimeball would I be if I didn't? I feel like if you see a need, you should fill it. ;) :)

Well I had the chance of all chances today and lost out.

About 2 miles down the road from my house is a family that a year ago the father of 5 lost his job.  They fell behind on the mortgage.  They then had a house fire that left holes in the roof and uninhabitable.  About 10 months after that the father takes 3 of his kids swimming.  He starts having trouble breathing the oldest son first gets the 2 younger kids to the shore then goes after the father.  Both the father and son end up dying.

Fast forward:

Last night I am coming home from dinner with my wife, which we never do and we chose to go to the Olive Garden that we never go to, when on the way home we see the road closed and all these huge lights up.  We get home to pickup my son at my mom's when she tells us it is Extreme Makeover building the lady and her four kids a new home.

I am on vacation this week so I wakeup this morning all excited to go volunteer for the week.  Turns out they have 2000 volunteer applications and aren't accepting any more.  :'(

Not that I really cared about the whole TV thing but I thought it would be a fun thing to do for someone in my town.  Oh well, I guess it is just nice to know they are turning people away instead of coming up shorthanded.

I offered a couple kids rides this afternoon.. It was raining, they live right near me and they have to walk, so I had to give them rides. Besides, it was raining. :P I feel good right now. :)

I never realized just what a small act of kindness can mean to someone. Maybe I should reflect on this. :-\

Man, I feel selfish, like i'm bragging even when I'm not. "Hey everyone, look at me help this person!" Then the fact I'm telling someone that is holding a philanthropy contest to give away a lightsaber, well, that doesn't help. But If I win, I did promise a friend of mine the he would get the Luke ANH in my sig. :) So I guess it evens out. ;) Boy, I feel better for having shared my emotional contortions. :P

Great point.

You don't need to do much.  Maybe just give encouragement to someone that is lonely or depressed.  Maybe someone in school that is an outsider or gets picked on because they are not "cool".  I have stood up for the underdogs before.  It doesn't seem like you are doing much but to someone that has no friends and feels like they don't fit in it can be the world.

I work in the Medical Field along with my wife and wanted to share a story...

My wife's co-worker, Katherine is expecting a baby soon and is faced with a rather HUGE Dilemma. I'm sure y'all know about the recent economic influx that's plaguing our country. Katherine works crazy hours as a Referral Coordinator (for those of you that's confused, she refers patients out to see specialists that a Family Practice or normal Provider can't treat completely), while her husband works 2 jobs (minimum wage level  :-[) to prevent their house from being repossessed and prepare for a baby. We all know how expensive it is to have a newborn  :P

When my wife told me this, I was like, "Well they have 3 incomes so they should be fine?!" to her until she told me the "coup d' gras" part of the story. Katherine is taking care of her Sister's family (5 kids) in the Philippines. Her sister passed away last year from a chronic type of Diabetes that would have been prevented or even cured but her sister had to choose between buying her OWN medications or putting food on her family's table and being present at work 6 days a week. We all know that people in other countries (particularly 3rd world countries don't even make what our minimum wage people do here!). Her jerk husband left her for another mistress and you know how it goes...

Now one of her nieces (her sister's kid) is needing heart surgery and is at the hospital in the Philippines. They have a heart ready for transplant but will only go through with the operation unless they have the money PAID IN FULL. They have no such thing as DSHS or public assistance in their country. To make matters worse, they are trying to keep her at the hospital (what I'm suspecting is they still want to get money from her by charging hospital bills for staying  >:().

Back to Katherine, having a baby and helping out your sister's kids while having your own finances to worry about is TOUGH. I know this as I was at this point for most of my life. Katherine only opened up to my wife (who is Caucasian/white) when she found out that I was Filipino also. I'm not trying to stereotype but I can at least speak for my culture that we only open up (mostly) to others that are not Filipinos when we really know them well or have a really good "relationship" with. She was still hesitant to open up to my wife, but is trying.

She then brought her 2 Coach purses yesterday at work to sell to help raise some additional money so that her niece can go through with her surgery ASAP. She was selling a REAL Coach purse that's worth at least $498 outside for $220. This is a real-deal purse and not fake. She has the receipts, packing tissue, boxes and all. My wife was so touched with her story so she called me yesterday if she can maybe give her some money ($100) as tithing (just like what we do at our church) as we really wanted to help someone out this year. We've thought of Charities, Toys for Tots, etc. I thought that this was the best way to really help someone out this year.  I told her to go ahead and cut her out a check for $100 from my savings account. Katherine was in tears and even OFFERRED the purse to my wife (that same purse that was $498) just because she gave her $100. This is an uber-confirmation that she wasn't lying or making something up to get money.

Now that little girl is almost on her way to get the surgery, just a wee bit more!  ;)

This really made me feel good and I'm kinda tearing up when I'm writing this as this is the most touching story that I've ever had to share with to anyone in a VERY long time, if not the only one.

Thanks again for listening guys,

Darth Kaos
(Kris)

EDIT!!!
News from my wife: My wife felt really bad and offered to give Katherine another $100 to help out with the surgery (they need about $350 more in US Dollars), but she wouldn't take it unless my wife takes her purse. So my wife reluctantly accepted the purse that was originally on sale for $220 for $200. I'd say it's a Win-Win situation for everyone, my wife got a new purse that she couldn't ever afford unless we charge it on a credit card and we were able to bless and help out a little kid by doing this. God works in mysterious ways and blesses people that are not asking for anything in return and are willing to help to no matter what. God bless you all!

Kaos:  I hear you, and can back you up on how clannish we Phillipinos can get.  Of course you know that means that we see one of our "own" in trouble, so we all rush in to help.  Please PM me if there's anything I can to to help out your wife's friend that won't go against her accepting "charity". (I also know how hard it is to accept help without giving anything in return.)

Forgive me all, if I seem a bit exclusionary, or even nationalist (can't say racist, that'd be inaccurate as well as get me thrown out) but I hear the stories of my grandfather's background, before he brought his family over to the US.  His first pair of shoes were given to him when he joined the US navy.  As bad as it is here, I'll never see the level of poverty that my relatives live in cheerfully.

Shaak, I'm there with you.  Every week I put my money in my work's lottery pool, and every week, we don't even win a rock, but still, there's always next time!   ;D

This is my story;

2 Mothers Days ago, I was at a restaurant, of coarse celebrating Mothers Day with my Mom and Fiance. When we were finished and out in the parking lot ready to get into the car, there was another gentleman looking under his Car Hood because he couldn't get his car started and AAA would not help him because his membership had expired a few days past and his Mother(Elderly) was sitting in the car. Several others tried to help him but could not fix the problem so I asked my Mom and fiance to hold on and let me take a look. After trying to diagnose the problem without any tools handy, I asked him to hold on and let me take my party home and would return with some diagnostic tools to see if I could get the car started. When I returned there were 2 others that had tried but to no success. I looked over the fusses and found that 2 of them had opened, 1 of which was the Main CPU to the car. I replaced the burnt fuses and the car started with no problem. He offered to pay me but I refused. I did show him were the fuses went and asked him for his address which he gave me and Thanked Me. I later sent him a complete fuse kit and a Tech manual for his car. I felt gratified that I could help a stranded driver, especially on such a celebration as it was.

I do believe that the phrase" DO UNTO OTHERS AS YOU WOULD HAVE OTHERS DO UNTO YOU".

I have been helping in this manner for a long time and never expect anything in return.

MTFBWUA and never ask anything in return as it will eventually be returned 10 fold for any good deed done.

I can't believe I forgot about this 1;

Back in 1989 I was flying back from from Houston Texas on a Boing 737-200 series airplane, the flight was supposed to take about 2 1/2 hours, well anyway when we were on approach to LAX the airplane was having problems getting the right wing main gear down. The Pilot announced that they were experiencing mechanical problems and were attempting to correct it. As I was an FAA A&P licensed Mechanic I decided to go to the ****pit and asked if I could be of any assistance. They asked to see my license and agreed. They attempted to cycle the landing gear sequence to no avail, so it was decided that we would use the emergency landing gear release which was located in the middle of the passenger cabin. The attempt was made but the leaver for the release was not budging, we scratched our heads for a few seconds and it came to me to use the fire axe in the ****pit as a lever to help in moving the release handle. The co-pilot tried first but he was not successful(not muscular enough), I took the attempt myself and after a few good yanks the lever moved and the landing gear locked into position. With that accomplished, the co-pilot thanked me and we both returned to our places. The rest of the passengers hooped and applauded that we could land safely, even though we still had to call in an Emergency Landing. After we landed the passengers and I departed the plane on the slides(routine) and I went on my way to the Terminal along with the rest. I didn't think anything about it except that the plane and the passengers were safe. A few days had passed and the FAA contacted me and wanted a debriefing about what had happened. I went to my local FAA office in Los Angeles wondering what they wanted to know about and was pleasantly surprised  to find out that they wanted to give me an Accommodation for my deed. I was given a letter from them and a Thank You for saving the passengers the plane and the crew from what may have been a horrendous out come if the gear had not deployed.

Well needless to say , I felt good about what I did and just chalked it up to destiny for being at the right place at the right time.

I have been an Auto Mech. since I was 16 and received my NTSB DOT License at the the age of 20, my Motorcycle Mech. License when I was 21 and my FAA license at the age of 24.

I do believe that a well rounded education and practical experience is a good thing.

Once again thankyou from the bottom of my heart to everyone who participated!
