Title: Santa Cruz Jedi Academy
Post by: MasterScott831 on May 01, 2010, 05:48:52 PM
I've finally started up my own saber academy in Santa Cruz County. It's totally free of charge and anyone is welcome.

EDIT: We now have a webpage for those who would like to know more about the academy.

Well, thank you very much. If you really are interested, we take on anyone from anywhere. Even if you can't physically participate, I do encourage those far away to join the forum (the link can be found in my profile under website). That way, if they are ever in the area, they have a general idea of the Academy as well as head start for when they do want to participate in our meet ups.

I live in Capitola! I'll see if I can drag a few friends along.  ;)

By the way, I do not mind necroposting. I'd prefer if this topic did not die, as it is the only connection between SCJedi and FX Sabers. So no badgering new posters please. Thank you. :)

A little to far from home for me, but I do often go to santa cruz (1-2 times a year) might have to talk the wife into stopping by if we have a trip, just had a baby so wouldn't be for a few months.  :)

1st off, several friends and I duel every so often & would very likely love to meet fellow saber enthusiasts and duel. we're all 20 somethings with our own Ultrasabers/MRs. I know you guys posted an update on FB saying you'll be meeting up again sometime & I look very forward to meeting you people.

That's very kind of you to consider us in your backyard as I believe your a few hours away. I can't honestly say I've ever considered Holis my backyard.  :)

@ the VERY least, I think it would be a grand idea for any/all of us to shake hands eventually. I was convinced for years that I was the only saber enthusiast in the 831. But in recent days there seems to be a certain discovery in our area of saber swingers.

May the Force serve you well.

Hollister is 40 min. away from Capitola  ;)
San Jose is an hour.  :D

Well, let's hook something up, then. We'd be down to saber playing at the beach perhaps? If y'all PM me for more details we can get it set up.

Ok, so we are leaning towards two locations. Cabrillo college and the parking structure downtown, the one across the street from Clouds. Thoughts?

@nartules: We would love for you to come duel with us sometime. Basically, the conditions for joining us are if you have a saber and are willing to come out. That simple. :)

@Mikkyo: I agree. I think it would be wonderful if a bunch of ppl from all around the central coast banded together and shared a common interest. This is mainly the reason why I stated SCJedi in the first place.

@Caine: We are a small bunch of 20-something year olds, though we have a few young ones (high school students) who practice with us, occasionally. We would be highly honored if you would duel with us sometime. Sending you a PM...

Keep in mind that dueling and saberplay in parking garages can attract the attention of security guards. Nova and I got told to put away our sabers in a parking structure in LA one time, when we were just lightly touching them together to show a friend.

I would suggest a park if you can..or even Cabrillo's sports fields if that works.

The particular parking structure I mentioned is publicly owned and we've had permission to be there in the past. I'd have to talk to the city again, but I'm sure they'll let us use it once again.

Ok, so Cabrillo College is most likely going to happen. As for the parking structure, that's a backup plan. Sabers on the Beach? That will probably happen eventually, but I want to have a few successful meet ups before we pursue that, first.

In Addition: I updated the first post and even embedded a video in it. From now on, I'll continue updating the first post instead of adding more posts to this thread.

Not seeing a video in your first post.  :-\

It isn't really relevant anymore. In the video, it mostly talks about the first meet up (yesterday), so I removed the link. But if you still wanna see it:
There you go.  :)

What did y'all work on?

We did orientation, introductions, some stage combat, some full contact combat, took photos and ended with knighting three of the members. It was really fun! I loved how we all got along almost immediately and meshed pretty well. We had some people show up around 7:40pm, so we extended the meet up for almost another hour. We are all looking forward to the next meet up in two weeks.

EDIT: Oh, almost forgot. New video coming soon!

Greetings Darth! I was the fella with the Green lightsaber that showed up a little later ^\^ I had a few ideas i wanted to sling your way. I recall in your pre-meetup video you mentioned that PVC pipe wrapped with blue painters tape is a viable solution for those without the money to get Ultra or FX sabers.  I have another idea that may prove to be less damaging against our sabers: we should pool some money together and by 3-5 grab bag sabers with blades from ultrasabers.com so those who can't afford one can use the loaners. If we need to appoint a treasurer to handle the money i would gladly accept the responsibility ^\^ That's all for now, and I'm happy to see an Academy starting in Santa Cruz!

Ah yes, hi Brooke! We hope to work with Ultrasabers in some fashion that could help the academy, possibly in the instance that you mentioned. As for a treasurer, we would need to appoint a senior member to manage such a responsibility. But because you were the first to bring this up, we might just consider appointing you as treasurer. But you'd have to become either a Jedi Master or Sith Lord first. If you spend enough time to earn either of those ranks, that will tell us that you are a serious member that we can trust with such an important task. Good to have you with us on board. I have a feeling that your enthusiasm will greatly benefit the academy. :)

Hehe I have a feeling I would have been up there getting knighted if I had been able to come for the whole thing ^\^; Many of my friends comment on how good I am managing my funds and making payments on time so it would be no problem to take on such a task when I am deemed worthy :)

Don't worry, I have faith that you'll be a great Jedi Knight in no time. :)

Thank you for volunteering to be treasurer. Only time will tell at this point though.

If anybody is willing to replace the battery pack on my grab bag with the spare pack I already have, the Academy can have it. I just don't have a soldering iron anymore. It's been through a bit of abuse, but it's still intact. I'm just not a big fan of blue sabers.

Just bumping the thread.

For those who would like to know, we are holding our fourth meet up this Saturday. Details are on the first post.
