Title: Vader ROTJ + Luke ROTJ V2 mini lightsaber modding (NEW Vader pics)
Post by: levelnext on October 21, 2007, 03:37:59 PM
Hello dudes and duddettes  :D

Well I am starting two little mini saber projects:

- luke ROTJ V2
- vader ROTJ ...  yes!

For this i used a luke ANH, vader ESB and luke ROTJ mini sabers.
Parts from luke ANH went to the luke ROTJ and parts from the vader ESB went to the luke ANH.

it's still a work in progress... we'll see how it goes.

here are some pics:

Very cool, I did a Luke V2 mini........but I don't have a cone knob very nice indeed...... ;D Can't wait to see the Vader when it's done. What's your idea for the emitter?

I'll be watching this with great interest!

I already have an extra Luke ESB and a Luke ROTJ sitting around for just such a purpose =)

I've got  more knobs Beggar, if you want one i could send it to you.  ;)

I am thinking of cutting the ESB vader's emmiter to fit it into the graflex.  I've already dissasembled the vader and it fits.
Then paint the top part of the graflex black.  Still need to figure out the parts under the shroud and the allen bolts.
I am planning on a weathered version of the ROTJ vader as the ANH luke is already kinda weathered (grips, and damage of dissasembly, one s or two? lol)
Then perhaps i'll try and make a pristine one.

I'll keep you posted Biggs.  We need a V2!! I have a knob for you if ya like.

Did you have them made?

How much?

Hey R2,

On your Vader ROTJ, how about some small headless set screws for the hex bolts? I'm sure that a hoody or model shop should have them small enough to fit the right scale (or close to it).

you'd have to use precision drill bits on a dremel, and then tap the holes to the proper thread pitch for the setscrews. ;)
Title: Re: first steps into mini lightsaber modding...
Post by: levelnext on October 22, 2007, 02:30:25 AM
Thanks BEN!  i will keep posting pictures of the process to keep you updated  :D

@ DT :  I was thinking headless screws too, but also found some very small black screws but i think they are a little too big.  I'll try and find some
            that fit.

The precision dremmeling time is what might be a little difficult, but i know someone who can do it for me (i guess lol)

For this weathered ROTJ vader i used an ANH luke (for the 7 grips) but i might be using a luke ESB for the pristine version (because of the d-ring).

No progress for now.

I received another luke ROTJ today on the mail (that's great cause i got a little nervous when i started modifying the only one i had) ROTJ luke minis are getting harder to find.

That's all for now, have a nice day fellow fx-saberers  ;D

Excellent R2 I'll be interested to see how these turn out for you.
(I have a Luke ANH I chopped in half for obvious reasons ;))

Thankyou Yoda.

So you making a Vader ROTJ too master Yoda?  :'(  oh noooooo,  now mine is going to look horrible next to yours  :'( :'( so unfair ;D :D

Did you chop it in half to use only the upper graflex part and fit it into another bottom?!?
What are your plans on it?

Anyway i look forward to exchange of experiences on making this mini.

Thankyou my friend.  We'll see how it goes, hope i dont destroy the hilts LOL
Title: Re: first steps into mini lightsaber modding...
Post by: BIGGS DARKLIGHTER on October 22, 2007, 12:01:35 PM
I'm not worried about messing up the hilts making a Luke V2. Worst thing that can go wrong is getting a paint job you dont like and then just having to strip and repaint.

However, making a Vader ROTJ worries me.
Title: Re: first steps into mini lightsaber modding...
Post by: levelnext on October 22, 2007, 12:18:07 PM
Yes, i meant the Vader ROTJ.  There are some minis at risk, specially that Vader ESB lol.

Hope i only kill one.

By the way, i am starting tonight with the V2 luke.  I'll keep you posted with pics later this night (it's night over here).
Also want to take some pics of how i managed to take the ESB clamp and fit it into the ANH luke. (there was some sawing involved)
So stay tuned for some extra pics of the first steps of the process.

cheers
Title: Re: first steps into mini lightsaber modding...
Post by: levelnext on October 22, 2007, 05:14:34 PM
double post..  :D

Ok i did some work tonight here it is:

First with the luke ROTJ V2.

I was reading a tutorial HERE (http://threads.rebelscum.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=2653909&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1#2653909) at rebelscum on how to dissasemble the luke ANH/ESB and it was good,
but when it came to sawing the control box on the luke ROTJ i took another path.

pics are clickable  ;D

I ripped the top part of the control box (copper part) and the screws immeditely showed up

(https://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/th_d3.jpg) (http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/d3.jpg)

it didnt take that much time as the tutorial said but i kinda bent the circuit.  No big deal. so then i just unscrew them and then
i realized that this part is a sleeve and without the screws it moves freely.

(https://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/th_thispart.jpg) (http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/thispart.jpg)

So i tried some screws  but they got in the way of the clamp (couldn't spin it freely so
it got locked in a not accurate control box/d-ring position)

(https://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/th_d1.jpg) (http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/d1.jpg)

So i had to chop this screw: sand it  and use it on the saber:

(https://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/th_c8.jpg) (http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/c8.jpg)    (https://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/th_c7.jpg) (http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/c7.jpg)

Re-assemble and:

(https://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/th_c5.jpg) (http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/c5.jpg)    (https://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/th_c4.jpg) (http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/c4.jpg)

or

(https://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/th_c3.jpg) (http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/c3.jpg)    (https://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/th_c2.jpg) (http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/c2.jpg)

And then for the cone knob i've got:

(https://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/th_c1.jpg) (http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/c1.jpg)    (https://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/th_c.jpg) (http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/c.jpg)

Not fixated yet.

Well that's for now with the luke.  I'll keep you posted.
Title: Re: first steps into mini lightsaber modding...
Post by: levelnext on October 22, 2007, 05:31:13 PM
triple post! sorry  ::)

and now the progress with the vader ROTJ.

I didnt take photos when i dissasembled the luke ANH, it was kind of messy  :D  Some parts are
hard to take apart.  (good thing these sabers are going to have a weathered look lol)

But here's a quick guide to take apart the Vader ESB:

First i unscrewd the following part and the screws were revealed:

(https://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/th_b5-1.jpg) (http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/b5-1.jpg)    (https://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/th_b3.jpg) (http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/b3.jpg)

Then took out the center part which had to be saw and sanded down to fit the ANH luke hilt.  It
had a little part coming out in the middle that fit into the ESB vader hole but made the assembly on the ANH
luke impossible.

(https://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/th_b4.jpg) (http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/b4.jpg)    (https://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/th_b1.jpg) (http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/b1.jpg)    (https://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/th_b2.jpg) (http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/b2.jpg)

Then unscrew the little knob by the d-ring and all these screws to take the shroud out:

(https://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/th_a1.jpg) (http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/a1.jpg)    (https://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/th_a2.jpg) (http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/a2.jpg)    (https://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/th_a6.jpg) (http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/a6.jpg)

I did grind the emmiter piece and it's metal! So it is going to be hard to saw off all the upper part.  :o

here's more pics:

(https://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/th_a5.jpg) (http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/a5.jpg)    (https://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/th_a4.jpg) (http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/a4.jpg)    (https://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/th_a7.jpg) (http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/a7.jpg)

I'll post more pics as i work on the minis.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I mean, is the luke ROTJ mini = aluminum?

LOL

no problem man, i am searching for info all around, just a matter of time for me to find it or for
some member here to post some tips and we'll be up and running, bad thing today (saturday)
a lot of shops close around here, so might have to wait till monday.

I've only acrylic paint here at home, but something really tells me that it wont work, i need some
other kind, maybe dull coat and sealer or something else.

BTW biggs n' beggar:  got 2 post cards today, who knows for what?!?!  ::)

Which part do you wanna paint, R2? The black part on the grip? Do you want to consider anodizing?  :D
Title: Re: first steps into mini lightsaber modding... (help needed on painting)
Post by: levelnext on October 29, 2007, 01:48:43 AM
I dont think anodizing is an option here my friend, could be a little expensive, or difficult to perform by me.
I was thinking something more like someone posting:

dont use acrylic paint but "_________" kinda paint
clean the aluminum first with "__________"
add a coat of "________" at the end for "_________"

and something like that.

but thanks man

Not sure if this helps but we used a zinc chromate primer over aluminum.  Then painted like normal.  I would always clean the surface to be painted to get off any oils from your hands, dirt etc.

BTW  They look great so far.

Thanks TK, thanks 3PO.

Primer! that's what i wanted to know.
I am hitting the hardware store today to find out about the paint, primer, saw, and all the stuff needed to complete these two.

I'll keep you updated.

I normally use paint thinner or the like to clean off the thing being painted.  Any type of degreaser that evaporates quickly.  MEK (methyl ehtyl ketone) works great also but there are lots of cautions with it as it is very unhealthy.

Hay man .....I used a black paint pin from Fred Myers it's flat black and has a ball in it like a paint can, I taped off the parts I wanted to change and colored them in solid it drys fast and you can weather the paint with a safety pin after by lightly scratching off the paint you don't want. You can color right over the copper neck don't try to strip off the copper it will just wear down the part, I don't think it's metal it seems plastic to me.......... ;D
Title: custom Vader ROTJ + Luke ROTJ V2 mini lightsaber modding (vader ROTJ update)
Post by: levelnext on October 29, 2007, 02:08:48 PM
Sorry for changing the thread's name, i thought this one would be more appropiate.

Formerly called:  first steps into mini lightsaber modding..

Well i have some updates on the Vader ROTJ.
I will be starting paint job on the Luke V2 tomorrow, but for now i leave you with the Vader progress:

First I cut these parts with a saw and then sanded the interior of the shroud so that it fit the graflex hilt:

(clicky pics)

(https://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/th_a8-1.jpg) (http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/a8-1.jpg)  (https://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/th_a7-1.jpg) (http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/a7-1.jpg)

Notice the little button on the left of the first pic? Well I used that and half a transistor for the control box:

(https://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/th_a3-2.jpg) (http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/a3-2.jpg)

I found a screw/rod that fit perfectly in the hole left by the graflex emmiter rod:

(https://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/th_a2-2.jpg) (http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/a2-2.jpg)  (https://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/th_a1-2.jpg) (http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/a1-2.jpg)

I still need to work out the emmiter d-ring cylindric holder/part, the latch, the knob on the back part of
the emmiter (it's already there but not glued yet), the allen bolts and the paintjob.
For now this is what it looks like:

(https://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/th_a6-2.jpg) (http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/a6-2.jpg)  (https://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/th_a5-2.jpg) (http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/a5-2.jpg)  (https://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/th_a4-2.jpg) (http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n178/levelnext/a4-2.jpg)

Any tips, suggestions, questions or comments welcome.

More pics tommorrow if I actually get some work done.

Very nice so far  ;D

Question time!

What did you use for the D-ring cylinder on the Emmiter? I know you say it's not worked out yet but it looks pretty good so far.

The one in the photo is a capacitor, but it's not good cause it is not very solid.  I still need to find a plastic or metal cylinder for that part.

going to the parts market tomorrow see what i find.  ;)

Some progress:  I found the emmiter d-ring cylinder.  I used a pen, took the top part off and voila!
With a red hot pin i made 2 little holes to hold the d-ring.

then i started a little painting work and....

Ok i wasnt that careful and i did a bad paint job  :-\

But there no problem cause I am letting my painter girl do the second try.
So for now here's some pics of my bad work and the emmiter d-ring assembly:

I've done not much lately on this projects.  But tonight I am going to attempt to fabricate the ball catch latch of the mini
vader ROTJ.

Thankyou TK.
I've got some updates.

I've got a rough final version.  Only a few parts need to be changed for more accurate ones,
and some other cosmetic details that need attention.

Here's a general view:

As you can see it is not perfectly accurate  :P
And my skill (more like lack of)  with tools really shows.

I still want to work on it, but now it will be just changing little things, maybe adding real mini allen bolts,
finishing the ballcatch so it looks good, presentable at least  :D

Anyway, I'll keep you updated as I try and make the mini better.

Thankyou guys.

While working on the mini today i realized i have no practice when it come to tools.  :P

it took me a while to do some parts.

If you guys have any experience with drills or dremel type tools, you could easily
make a better one.

I am thinking of making another one, not weathered.  But I really need to learn
to use the tools LOL.

If someone is trying to make one, i welcome any question,
I might not know the answer but i could tell you where I messed it up and how
so that you dont.  ;)

Thankyou dudes  :D

Well the Luke V2 is almost ready.  It's a pristine condition version.
I still have to paint the emitter.
I¡ll be making another V2, a weathered one.  ;D

I made the ballcatch on the Vader a little better.
Still gotta work on the eye too.

Here's some clicky pics of the ROTJ mini collection, hope you like em:

Is it very hard to do these mods?

Well It really wasnt that difficult, but the vader didnt come out that good either.

for the luke V2 i say it's an easy process, the painting is what's kinda tricky.

R2 the Vader looks great man....whats up with these risen parts are they something your going to be selling ?................ ;D

Beggar:  Those resin parts were made by a RS member, you can read about it ON THIS THREAD (http://threads.rebelscum.com/showflat.php?Cat=25&Number=2984354&page=1&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1#2984354)

I pm'd him to ask about the resin parts, would he sell them etc.  got no answer.

I would certainly be nice to have a resin kit for a rotj Vader, or a metal kit would be better  ;)
