Crack sound Prizm5.1 and Ledstrip ws2812
« on: September 03, 2018, 02:13:20 PM »
Hi everyone
I have a lightsaber with ledstrips which has a loudspeaker cracking problem. I've read many posts reporting that kind of problem and tried many recommended solutions without positive results :(
My installation is:

Prizm 5.1 (bought July2018)
Speaker Vecco 2w 28mm
Ledstrip ws2812b IP30 120 leds each strip 2 back/back
Carbon resistor 470 Ohm 1W
Neopixel PCB connector pin set from TCSS
Bateries used Sony VTC6 HighDrain 3000mah / LG HG2 High Drain 3000mah
Aluminium custom hilt works fine with Tri Cree Leds

For the test I've set 3 color profiles where each one lights one led core RGB without color mixing. When all of them turn on there is no problem but after 2 minutes just the red profile starts to generate a cracking sound. When I remove the battery it is still over the 4V and this happen with both batteries tested.

The mixed colors have the same problem. That's why I wanted to limit the ignition to each core.

I've changed the PCB just in case but the problem is still there, I've isolated the ledstrip just in case it was generating a short circuit or something internally. I don't know what else I can do.

Help me please!!!

Looks like the battery, you need high drain high amp batteries for Neopixel.
Also it could be a blown speaker.
I've had a few over the years just start crackling after a little use.
I don't know, i gotta bad feeling about this!

Lots of people say they have an issue with red I hear but I've never had the issue with red. Only prolonged highly mixed colors with multi die effects are draining to low quality batteries or high quality batteries that are just running low. Could there be a wire or something touching the speaker like a shard of metal on the speaker (magnetic). If it's the battery type like Bombarta says try the Orbtronic high drain 18650's really good luck with those and the Panasonic ones that TCSS sells are also excellent.

A possible hack: Limit the drive of each die to less than what you have now but producing the same color hue, but less bright. See if it lasts a bit longer that way.

definitely a battery issue, the drain is not sufficient and the voltage drops and ripples.
It could be a wiring issue as well (small gauge wires used)

also, I don't understand the 0.47 ohm resistor. Especially 1W. If that's the data line resistor, it's incorrect.

It is 470ohm 1w was a typing mistake. Now I am testing with another Sony VTC6 3000 mah 15A High Drain and the same happens. After just 2 minutes the cracking sound appears with the red profile( Blue and green works ok until now). The testing voltage of the battery is 4.01v I think it is not considered as low.

voltage of the battery must be measured under load, it will give you no information by just looking at the voltage after use.

Also, a video would be great to see and hear what the problem is, thanks
