Title: Questions about CF 4
Post by: killphil on July 26, 2019, 01:07:06 PM
I know this is ancient in terms of todays saber tech, but was hoping I could get a little information.

I have a GCS saber with CF4. Great saber and soundboard but the issue is with modern SD cards. According to the manual on Plecterlabs, they are meant to be used with 1 or 2 GB SD cards from sandisk or kingston. Problem is, I cannot seem to find those cards at retail in this day and age. Are the SD cards shown for sale at TCSS gonna be appropriate for a CF4? And if not, is there any way I can source them?

Second has to do with the SD card holder on the board itself, It uses the old tension pin style, and those pins have warped and are not ideal any longer. It works, but sometimes impact can easily dislodge the connection. I have a spare CF4 lying around that has a more modern spring loaded SD card holder, so the question is, how hard is it to desolder those holders to swap them out?

You'll find 1-2GB cards on aliexpress, but indeed the SD driver from back then was limited to gen1 cards, so I can't guaranty for sure that they will work.

regarding swapping, it's possible, but beware : if that's a CF4 with a regular SD (not micro SD) I used to secure the butt side of the connector with CA glue, because if was as large as the board and I couldn't use the wings anchors. When removing this with hot air, you'll get CA glue vapor, wear mask and glasses, it's not really dangerous but it remains cyanide vapor and it stings the eyes sometimes.

Thanks for the quick reply, Erv. I want to swap the one on the left with the one on the right side.

So being that it is micro sd card and not the large ones, does your above statement still apply to the driver? On aliexpress I dont see any cards from kingston or sandisk in 1 or 2 gb and as I recall, those were the 2 brands that were used on those boards in those days.
