Holy thread revival!
They brought Maul back because they made a mistake not keeping him for the 3 prequels and fans wanted more Maul story's.
He survived because of pure Sith hatred for Kenobi.
Also TCW deffinatly Canon, it fills all the gaps between ep2-3.
And now Rebels has filled the gap between ep3 and Rogue1 ( although that was unknown when this thread started lol ).
I don't know, i gotta bad feeling about this!

I'm a fan of the overall Maul arc.  It was done much better than some of the major canon.  Twin Suns was just an amazing episode.

I loved the Maul arc in TCW, it was done wonderfully (as many of the TCW episodes in fact, some of them better than some of the movies). It seems he is meant to attempt once again what we failed to achieve due to the would-be Emperor back in the days of the Clone Wars. That can be a starting point of an interesting anthology movie, whereby we know how he ends in the famous 3 secounds battle.

I did not like the 'Spider-Maul' (does whatever a Sith Lord can? lol) beginning of his TCW arc but in the end it was good...however I loved his arc in Rebels and his fateful encounter with OWK and death scene were awesome imo. I know some thought the final saber duel was too short but maybe that could be expanded into a truly epic duel for the live action Kenobi movie.
To DREAM the IMPOSSIBLE DREAM. To FIGHT the unbeatable foe. To BEAR with unbearable sorrow. To RUN where the brave dare not go. To RIGHT the unrightable wrong. To LOVE, PURE AND CHASTE, FROM AFAR [-sigh-]. To TRY, when your arms are too weary; to REACH the unreachable Star!... This is my Quest; To follow that Star, no matter how hopeless, no matter how far...

Maul's inclusion in Solo completely trumps this whole silly idea that Maul being alive somehow decanonizes the Clone Wars series by Dave Filoni; other than old George himself and later Disney confirming that CW was canon already years ago...
