Loved it. I went in expecting a continuation of TFA's remake of ANH, and I was quite pleasantly surprised that it wasn't a remake of ESB. I'll agree that the forced comedy was stupid but hey, it's Disney. If it worked in Marvel, they'll just keep ramming it in all their intellectual properties, right?
I do not like TFA. I don't care much for JJ Abrams and his ridiculous unsolvable mysteries that he keeps setting up, building up, and never, ever resolving in a manner that would ever live up to the hype (Cloverfield and Lost, anyone?) So I was just so glad that TLJ just answered most of the "mysteries" he set up without letting him ham it up for some major letdown in EP IX.
Didn't think much of the casino planet stuff, or the weird pacing of the film with the whole fleet chase thing. I'm really not sure that Luke should have died, either, although, he's one with the Force now, I'm pretty sure he'll be back as a ghost in EP IX. Also, I don't know why, but I was really angry they just killed off admiral Ackbar so like that.
The battles were good. That lightsaber duel in the throne room was awesome (and I imagine that we're going to see some Praetorian Guard weapon builds in the gallery in the next year), so was Crait. I did think something was up when Luke drew a graflex with a blue blade. I wish we'd have had more space battles, though. This new trilogy is seriously lacking in starfighter combat so far. the bomber stuff at the start was cool, they really nailed the WWII aerial combat vibe, there was just not enough of it.
the one thing I was expecting that did not come to pass was a role reversal. I had this unshakable feeling that the film would end with Rey and Kylo swapping alignments, and that the final shots would be Rey training with Snoke and Kylo returning to Luke, then cut to credits.
Also, it was good to see Yoda again. A nice surprise.
Oh yeah, biggest disappointment for me was the score. I don't know if it's John Williams getting old, but TFA and TLJ's music have both been really, really weak. there's nothing new. nothing memorable. None of the intricate leitmotif work from the prequel soundtracks (heck, even little leitmotif work at all, I can't think of a single character's tune from TFA that returned in TLJ. Rey had a quite memorable one in TFA that just vanished) none of the great, bombastic themes of old (the March of the Resistance is ok, but it's nowhere near the Imperial March, or even duel of the Fates or Battle of the Heroes.) I was more impressed with Michael Giaccino's Rogue One score than any of the new main series music.
