Hey Everyone,
I can announce today that the run is officially a go!

If you're on the list below please email me with your FX-saber name, full name and address. And your preferences for bargraph colour, charger, hard case. I will then send you an invoice - AFTER THAT you may pay the $500 deposit.

I've secretly been working on the ultimate Ascend upgrade fow awhile now. It's a heavily weathered Ascend with the emitter turned down to fit a shroud. I have been looking forward to using the copper powdercoating, but in a lighter coat to give the emitter a pale copper - almost bronze look. I've also lined up a window to reveal the 7 segment LED bargraph onboard the CF. and Best of all. I've found a way to install the CEx for colour mixing AND an internal RICE port!

This will be a run of 15 sabers

The saber will have:
- All the above mentioned features CF6, CEx, bargraph
- Bargraph colour will be your choice blue or white, or green.
- Cree R/G/RB LED
- 7.4 v. twin 18500 Lithium ion Battery Pack, 2.1mm recharge port
- Brass aux button
- RICE port and SD card access by taking off pommel - exactly like the Ascend PC upgrades
- 1.5w premium speaker
- RICE cable included
- No blade with this run
- Charger is an extra $30, and there will be an option to include the hard case for $50 plus extra shipping.

Price is $1170, A non-refundible deposit of $500 is due by December 1, 2012 or you lose your spot. The balance will be due when the saber is completed

The timetable: deposits dues Dec. 1, and run completion target will be mid Feb.


The design is the Weathered saber, but I will also be offering a clean version;

Regarding the timetable - If there's alot of interest quickly, I would get this rolling by Dec. 1 and hope to finish in Jan-Feb.

I don't think so. I wanted the shroud to be an element that sets the CF version apart.

Currently it is removeable, but I plan to use some adesive just to keep it vibration proof. There could be a way to make it more easily removeable.

I'm awaiting word from the machinist on one part, and then I will post the price and details and turn this into a sale thread. I'll also do my best to order extra parts to leave room for a few people to jump on board later.

Take a look at my Jaina video. That is with the LedEingin, but with RICE, you can acheive almost ANY colour.

I'll probably set up the saber with several different colour and FoC cofigurations for the various fonts. Like my other sabers- it will come fine tuned right out of the box.

Hey scorpion, the tri leds might be brighter when it's 2 leds to one or two ledengin dice, but for a color xtender saber it's about how the colors mix, not how bright it is (to a certain extent).  I can't say one way or the other is better because i haven't tested a tri cree rgb but it's pretty easy to see how a tri led would have noticable color separation whereas a multi die but single dome led would mix much better.  Again that's just theory and it looks like Rob is gonna try both and choose the better option for these sabers. 

Rob, since you're making note of it, i'd like mine to be clean.

On the Weathering, I love your weathered version on this Rob, I'd ask that on mine, the choke and perhaps a little of the shroud area also be weathered with that oxidized, worn look as well.Will the brass aux switch be back lit? I also hope your new Jaina Solo font is on it, I saw your video on it, sounds excellent!

I'll update the list with preferences this evening.

But I need to be clear on a couple things.

There will be no choice on what main LED you get - I'm selecting what I think is the best for brightness and colour mixing. I don't want to specially configure each participants settings - everyone gets the same.

And there are only two versions to choose from;
1. Heavily Weathered - yes the shroud will have some weathering but not the choke - it's intended to appear polished from use - a natural place where one grips the saber and exerts force.
2. Clean  - black pc, pale copper pc, and polished aluminum.

There is no lightly weathered option.


The reason I'm being strict is to keep the cost down. On a run like this I have to streamline the process so that everyone saves. I can't let it become 10-15 similar custom sabers.

The brass aux switch will be slightly backlit. I will show that in the video - hopefully next week once I get a couple things ironed out. Fonts will be decided later.

 this is my 1st rice saber
vid saber looks awesome nice variety of colors and the saber sounds great i hope those are the fonts we get also

Hey Everyone,
I can announce today that the run is officially a go!

I will change the title of this thread to a sale thread and update the first post with deposit info and timetable. If you're on the list please email me with your FX-saber name, full name and address. And your preferences for bargraph colour, charger, hard case. I will then send you an invoice - AFTER THAT you may pay the $500 deposit.

I just ordered the green - have not seen it yet. Both blue and white are very bright for such small LEDs

Blade colour and font choices will be posted later.

All the CF and CEx are here, now comes the long task of soldering tiny 0402 LEDs onboard the CFs.

I will start installation of electronics next week in the order of the list on the first page (spot #1 first, then spot #2 etc.) Final balances are due before the saber ships. I should have all the sabers done in 3 weeks.
(There may be a minor delay on the two sabers with a green bargraph, the batch of green LEDs was bad - new batch coming).

I will post a video when I have the first couple wired up.

Even though I already own one of Rob's Elites, I could see myself getting this saber. Guess its a good thing I didn't join the boards until after the run was locked (not good for me but good for my bank account). Looking forward to the reviews when all of you receive them and definitely looking forward to Rob's next creation.

New batch of green accent LEDs are here, tested and soldered on.

The colours are;
Hero - green
Fates - royal blue
Bespin II - sky blue
REVENGE - orange
Jaina - Purple
Vader - Red

After removing the blade retension screw, taking the shroud off is pretty simple - slowly pull it straight off (not twisting). It will come of slowly due to the tension from the rubber O-ring.
Getting it back on is the same, but before you do - the O-ring must be squeezed into the groove it sits it.

I just picked mine up from Rob today. Gotta tell you guys, it's better than I hoped it would be. I've had a few minutes to play around with it (fending off my two little boys), and I just love the feel of it. Out of the seven sabers I own (and I have some really nice ones), this has instantly become my favorite. Can't wait to hook this up to the computer and play around with the colour mixing.

I will post some pics later, if I can figure out how to do it on this forum :)

Thanks again Rob, it's a real pleasure having this saber in my collection, and it was nice to meet you today. I certainly don't think this will be my last GCS.

Sabers number 1-6, and 9 are shipped. Still waiting for some final payments.

Saber #7 is being tested.

I hope to assemble #8-12 next week.

I've never had more fun testing a batch of sabers. Every time I switch banks and see a fresh blast of colour I'm hit by a wave of awesome all over again.

UPDATED- 2/7/13- I recieved Ascend #9 today. She's the weathered one in the latest video Rob just posted. VERY IMPRESSIVE in person! The custom Luke V2 type weathering is perfect! Rob uses just enough weathering to simulate a worn, used, exposed to the elements looking weapon,  without overdoing it. The weathered copper PC on the emitter really tops it off.
 When I fired her up, what first struct me was how loud, crisp and  clear the new CF 6 is. Erv keeps improving each CF generation. I can't wait to see what these can do in the next few years. The different colors are amazing! This is my first CF 6 saber with RICE and color changing and to have each font or charecter have it's matching blade color is so much more fun, it really adds to the experience when going through each font.

The colors are all even, bright and well saturated, and the shade of Purple Rob used reminds me of VV " OSPP", my favorite shade of Purple, so this really has that Mace Windu look. The overall balance, fit and finish is exceptional, and the saber is a little heavier than I expected, which I like, it feels like a real weapon in your hand!

The fonts are among Madcow's finest, and I love the new Jaina font, my favorite in this group!
I also am glad that Rob offered that backlit momentary switch upgrade- Very nice touch! It's very bright and the Arabash script is a cool feature that adds to the realism of a working weapon. The visible Blue Bar-Graph is also one of my favorite elements on this design. Those tiny leds are extremly bright and add to the look of a real weapon showing it's constant power levels.

 Rob's communication, service and craftsmenship were all top notch on this run, from start to finish! Rob does not rate this as a Genesis "Elite" custom saber, but I'll tell you what, to me, short of her not having that PVC chassis, this IS an elite Genesis custom saber! I always admired Rob's personal saber, "Fulcrum 3", and this is a pretty close relative, and I am proud to have her!

I completely agree with Sithslayer1. The quality and attention to detail is absolutely second to none.! I love a good SW replica, but this saber design is just so much more intuitive of what you would expect from a "real lightsaber". It's balanced, comfortable to wield, and just feels like what you would expect from a real  world design. This thing is honestly just amazing! And the sound from this saber is like none other in my collection!!

I was very happy to see a package waiting for me when I got home from work today  :D. You have to see it up close and hold it to fully appreciate how much work went in to it's design and construction.  It feels very solid and comfortable to wield, and as others have said, it is nice and loud.  The copper powdercoating and shroud add a really distinctive look to an already great design.  I really enjoyed going through the different colors and experiencing all of the features of the CF6.  Rob puts so much detail into his fonts that each color/font combination feels very different.  I'm going to have alot of fun with this saber.  Great work, Rob!

Forgive my lack of pictures, but I'll answer your question. I have compared my new #9 custom Ascend to my VV/SC Qui Gon with Green Led Engine 10 watt and some of my sabers that have a 10 watt Red Led Engine:
 The Tri Cree in Red and Green are not as bright or saturated to my eyes as the Led Engin, however the dramatic white Foc on the Tri Cree Red makes up for it. The Green Tri Cree is a more minty shade, reminds me of a Seoul P4 Green, only brighter. Green, I prefer the Led Engin 10 watt. The Blue Tri Cree is very nice-a true Blue and bright, again, not as saturated as a 10 watt Blue Led engin, but still very nice! The Tri Cree Purple is Excellent- Almost dead on a VV OSPP shade and Bright!

Indeed! Let me be clear, I think the Tri Cree are great Leds! Very bright and even for the 1 die setup. The Blues and Purple in particular are very impressive, IMO. I should add that if Genesis Custom Sabers, VV, MH and GG all use Tri Crees, that's as good as it gets for an endorsement!

I received my Ascend today ;D Thanks rob, I love it already! Unfortunately though my computer doesn't seem to like the rice cable so I haven't been able to play around with the colours for the blade yet. Every time I plug it in I hear three quick beeps, anyone have any ideas?

Hey Aginor,

When I first plugged in mine, I had a problem as well. You will need to unplug the cable, go into the device manager and delete the entry that was created when you first plugged it in. You will see an entry with a yellow yield sign beside it. It's telling you that you are having driver issues.

Once that's done. Plug the cord back into the USB port (not the saber yet), you should get the usual USB connect sound, then a pop-up telling you that you need new drivers. Have the computer search online for them. The driver that is needed, is a windows driver that is available online, but not included with Windows. The computer should find and install it for you. If you have a Mac, I have no idea :)

I don't know of a way to decrease the menu volume off the top of my head... but the beeps can be controlled with this parameter in each banks config file;

vol=4
beep=40

The "vol" parameter is the overall volume (also affected in RICE)... the "beep" parameter is just the volume of  the confirmation beeps (not configurable with RICE).

Try taking out the SD card and putting the following into the "override" file

beep=20

I really like this hilt design... dare I say more than my corran horn. I mean its a different animal all togther, but the feel of the grip and balance feels so nice on the Ascend. I'm torn between which is my favorite GCS hilt.

I really like this hilt design... dare I say more than my corran horn. I mean its a different animal all togther, but the feel of the grip and balance feels so nice on the Ascend. I'm torn between which is my favorite GCS hilt.

Lol, QFT Scottjua! I have a Genesis Custom Sabers Curved Bane and while I LOVE that saber and will never part with it, from a balance and wielding standpoint, I love my # 9  custom Ascend! The balance and comfortable grip is excellent, and while a bit understated, this design looks like an actual field use combat weapon!

What setting when it comes to sensitivity do you guys use? Seems like I can't find the perfect balance and that's I wonder how do you fare with this.

I normally keep mine standard, I lowered the volume to 3 and changed the LED sequences and blade and FoC.

These are my setting when it comes to sensitivity, I found them to be the most accurate and realistic.

lc=80
hs=50
ls=10
i=55

You should put your SD card into the cardreader, and open the config.txt file of each font, find these lines and replace them with these. Alternatively, you could just open override.txt in the root of the SD card and just paste thse.

This saber has been so useful to me since I got it. Late at night when the house is dark, the parents and sister are sleeping and I'm hungry or thirsty? On goes the Ascend with its "Mute on the Go" function and off I go to the kitchen.  ;D

While I don't own an Ascend (yet, hopefully), I've done this a couple of times myself with my saber.  haha

Not in the near future. I will re-evaluate some things this summer - but I pretty much have the year planned out.
