Swordplay Studios and The Basic Zones
« on: March 12, 2007, 03:09:28 AM »
Hello everyone

I would like to introduce everyone to the Gentleman who traind me (Yoda)

His Name is Tim Weske and His accolades and work of His students range from
Pirates to Higlander and many others...

The Place Facility:
SwordPlay Fencing Studio, located in Burbank, CA has been in operation since 1992.

Owner and SwordMaster Tim Weske has established a successful and unique training
facility offering a variety of training in Olympic-Style Fencing (Foil, Epee & Sabre)
& Stage Combat for film and television.

Many of SwordPlay's fencers continue to be a driving force in the competition circuit
under the USFA (United States Fencing Association). In addition, Mr. Weske has proven
to be a mainstay in Hollywood through his work as SwordMaster in the film & television industry.

Here is a link to my original Article with a pictorial break down of the basic 1-6 following
the prefered methods of Swordplay Studios.
http://fx-sabers.com/saber_duel.html

Now of course each zone has high mid and low points.
Also the amount of Parries in Star Wars extends up to aproximately 19
so it does get much more involved than my simple explanation, but know this...
Those 6 zones are all there is.
Regardless  of the parrie choosen to defend from the attack it will fall with in one of those
zones and that is how they are numbered for competition and choreography.

Learn the zones and you'll be on your way to a better understanding of Dueling with your Lightsaber.

Im going to give Tim Weske a call this week.
I really want to take some classes,im just uber broke right now.
But with the coming of Lajedi it is a must I get in there to get my skills up,so I will do what I must.
But another prob is the class time.
It`s not a good class time for anyone in LA,to get there at 7pm I would have to fight traffic for like 2 hours just to get there every Monday
Would the Stage and Theatrical Combat be the classes I want to take?

But I see now reading more there is Private Lessons: $25
That might just work out if I can get there early afternoon.
How many Private Lessons: for $25 do you think it will take to get me up to par master Yoda?

Call Him you should Kit

I talked to Tim a while back, in fact it was recently after the Com-Con and I sent Him the Video Links
and was telling Him about all the Lightsaber things that were going on and that  I'd be sending people
His way as well as to check out His instructional Videos and Classes etc...

Do be aware that Tims classes are full swordfighting classes where you go from Foils and
on up to heavier weapons as you progress.
I went through a full year of classes but broke it up in to a couple years off and on during the early 90s.

(Actually it was my Father who taught me fencing and swordfighting early on... Tim just made me better)

Oh and they don't use Lightsabers... it's all Metal.

A Lightsaber combat is basically considered a broad sword and there fore adapts it's fighting style.

I used to use a Samurai against a fellow classmate who used a double ended battle axe which was the closest
we did that could be compared to an Obiwan vs Darth Maul Duel 8) we used to free fight after class which was
always fun because we could get in-to it more with out as many people around :D
Ahhh yes good times...

Now Classes are a bit pricey to get to the level you want, however

If your on a budget and don't have time or money for the classes... definitely get one of His DVDs.

It teaches you the industry accepted basics in the beginning (more like a few hours of trainning) ;)

Then goes into the various ways to put them together on to choreographed duels etc...
(I've discussed it with Tim and the Macbeth is the best for what is closest to Lightsaber Combat.)

JUST REMEMBER the most important hing you can get from this is PROPER instruction for placement
and zones.
To many times I see Clubs that just make up their own thing and if they met up with a person actually
trained to what the industry adhers to and expected to put together someting on the fly at a convention
they would have trouble coming together correctly.

Mostly people would just look out of place  :D  but worst case scenario is some gets poped in the eye or even
a tooh knocked out by a thickwalled blade ::)
My Example:
Defensive: goes to block at a low 1 (which is your left lower leg)
Offensive: Swings at Lower left Leg (this would be correct)

But can you imagine if He swung at His head instead of His leg because someone decided to change the placement?
or didn't know what it was to beging with so they make something up? It could get messy :-\

Anyway you can't go wrong with Tim's trainning as He's trainned not only mant of the people you see in films
but their instructors as well.

Just be sure and tell him I sent you ;D

Yes Kit that's correct.
Stage and theatrical combat is what your looking for.
I'd say about 3 - 6 months of Classes because He always starts you from the begining.
That's a Class or Two a week and they are are 45 minutes on average.

The Class will be focusing a lot on proper foot movement etc... mostly for balance but also for looking
good on camera so sometimes it can be slow and theres no dueling :D so just be prepared ;)

Then there are Classes where (when you get to that point) it's all dueling practice...you'll be
a little worn out after the first few times but you get used to it 8)

It really depends on how far you want to take things, and Like I said if you get the "Macbeth DVD" first
it will help you as well as take a class here and there untill you feel you want to get more into it etc...

Anakin and I will be down during C4 so we can go over some things then as well ;)

Position, the key to control in anything. I've said it before and will say it again, position will mostly always prevail over any strength or skill. The most basic of skills is the strongest. (Think of a pyramid, the base is the strongest) Flip the pyramid and too much skill will collapse the foundation.

Man, it would nice to have some saber enthusiasts around here. :(

There are plenty of enthusiasts around here Cin :)

Just getting them to do abide by the rules of international swordplay rules of engagement...
well were working on it ;)

That's what the Dueling Society will help bring in to focus in order to get everyone on the same page 8)

Maybe we should open up a section on here so we can see where everybody else is located at. That way when we want to get together it will be easy to find other enthusiasts in our areas.

EDIT:

After I posted this, the site brought me to the board and I saw the child boards. Oops ;D
