Title: Rating system for Component blade sabers and Luxeon sabers
Post by: Yoda on January 24, 2007, 03:27:19 AM
From my experience with all the types of blades I like to stick to a general rule
of dueling against the same type of blade.

component blade vs component blade or film vs film.

Each type of tubing has it's own characteristics and rebound flex so I'd rate them
and pair them as follows...
Level (1-4) Light to Spirited Swordplay
Level (5-7) Spirited Swordpaly to Moderate Dueling
Level (8-10) Moderate Dueling to Heavy Full speed/Dueling

I'd rate the Current Types of Saber Blades as follows considering their relative component
performance.

Master Replicas: LED strip type component blade with plastic and foam diffusion.
Polycarbonate Dual Tube (inner 7/8in and outer 1in )
Yoda: thinwalled 3/4inch blade Level 2
Darth Maul: thickwalled 1inch blade Level 5
3 Cell Models: thinwalled 1inch blade Level 4
6 Cell Models: Thinwalled 1 inch blade Level 3

Hyperdyne: LED 3 piece strip type component blade with plastic and foam diffusion.
Nylon Dual Tube (inner 3/4in and outer 1in )  Level 6.5

Luxeon Polycarbonate Blades: Film filtered diffusion hollow blade.
Thinwalled 3/4 inch Level 4
Thinwalled 1 inch Level 6
Thickwalled 1 inch Level 8

Ultra (fiber reinforced) Polycarbonate Blades: Film filtered diffusion hollow blade.
Thinwalled 1 inch Level 7
Thickwalled 1 inch Level 9

Typical Lightweight Boken: Level 7.5 ( untill it starts to crack :D )
Solid Hard Oak Boken (samurai preferably ;)): Level 10

Similar to the way you'd rate Metal blades in practice since you wouldn't use an Aluminum
stage blade against a stainless steel blade and like wise a stainless against a harder steel etc...
Aluminum blades are what is most widely used in movies etc.. because the make better much
better sound than steel ;)

I may post this Level system in a more general area as long as everyone concurs
that the strength levels are similar to your own experiences.

Once again Yoda comes up with something new.  Great idea for a rating system on how much all the different types can take.  I think I may have to get one of these new blade boards, sounds like what I'm looking for.

Yoda, beautifully written sir!  I really liked your synopsis, thank you for taking the time to write it up.

I would agree you can perform serious dueling with our blades.  And guess what, if the blade gets damaged it was engineered to be easily repairable.  All the expensive components are protected by the torque header wires.  BTW I can fight with a shinai no problem with my blades.

So I would even go a step further with the analysis.  If you happen to damage your blade, how repairable is it?  Do you have to throw it all away, do you need new components, another LED, driver, etc?  This is akin to asking "If I bought a car and had a mechanical problem with it, how much would it cost me to repair"?  Would you want to get a car that couldnt be repaired at all?  Or would you rather get a car that is easily repaired, something that even the customer could do if they had the knowledge and parts?

To me, that is just as important as the aforementioned question, but something not addressed until now.

Food for thought.

BTW, we are having the one-piece boards manufactured now!  I hope to get them up on the website soon...  :)

I'm glad you guys like the raring system 8)

The one piece Sounds cool 8) those will be the best for a display blade, and then the 3 piece for dueling :)

A good Jedi knows when to take the initiative and and I have copied Master Yoda's rating system and made a closed, stickied thread in the Dueling with your Lightsabers forum.  ;D
