Differences between a ROTJ Hero and V2?
« on: February 22, 2012, 03:37:18 PM »
I've been looking at the Luke ROTJ sabers and had a few questions:

1) Is the thin neck supposed to be identical dimensionally between the two (i.e., are they both "thin neck")?  obviously the hero is copper and the v2 is that dirty silver/black (so i guess i couldn't have an ldm mkvi turned in to a v2 unless the copper neck was replaced with an aluminum/steel one (assuming you did it right and didn't do a mickey mouse paint job over the copper).
2) the v2 has that graflex clamp with a different circuit card and clamp clip instead of the big Hero control box with 2 arrows and 2 black buttons
3) the section between the control box and the pommel is thicker(?) on the v2 than the Hero and has a diamond shaped clip of some kind.
4) The ribbed section is identical dimensionally on both?
5) The pommels are identical?
6) The emitter head is identical?

I was sure I preferred the Hero, but lately the v2 has been growing on me.  Maybe it's the control box--it just seems to make the saber look sleeker somehow.

They are not the same sabers. The V2 is the stunt saber that Obi used in ANH. And there are many different V2's as well.
 Check out this thread.

Moved to the V2 section.

1.Same diameter, but the V2 has a notch in it, near the emitter.
2.correct
3.V2 has a D ring, Hero has a triangle Belt clip
4-6. pretty much.

Correct. LDM has mentioned that he has some alum. necks avail for the MKVI. I also had that groove that Jango mentioned cut into the neck. Here is my MKVI V2 for reference.

I would NOT use the copper neck for this saber  if you can avoid it.

I say nay for #6.  Compare some pictures and you will see that an ls6 emitter is better for a v2 and a mkvi emitter is better for a hero.  They both "work" well for either, but they are not the same emitter.

So basically, the v2 emitter is squashed down and wider.  that's why an ls6 makes such an excellent v2 with a 3/4" neck mod.  It has that emitter rather than the hero emitter.

I'd also argue that the neck segments on the hero are longer than on the v2, but I don't have the time to compare pictures right now.  I just knew the emitter one off of the top of my head.

Let's assume the widths are the same or close... this is according to Master Replicas... I just made this gif that helps a little:

Hasbro Darth Vader Removable Blade
OR Qui Gon CFLS w/Makoto Green
MR Luke V2 LE
MR Qui Gon LE
EFX Ahsoka
Real Parts Obi Wan ANH (90%)

Both are MR LE's and 1:1 according to Master replicas.

Im holding both right now and everything is bigger on the V2 with the only acception being the activation box on the Hero being thicker but not longer. the chokes are a different shape. the Hero being a fraction longer. the emitter is smaller on the Hero.

If you're looking at one with electronics then im sure it will be different to the LE versions.

If you want any close ups i can take some shots for you

I guess my next question are you wanting to know the differences between the MR version or the custom machined versions or the screen used props? They will all be different dimensions. But you get the jist.

i was interested in the differences between the custom sabers.  i've seen ldm's/gg's hero, and i've seen other people's v2 but i wasn't clear on whether some of those v2s started as heroes and were transformed into v2s or if they were simply made to be v2s in the first place.  i didn't see any sabersmiths selling "screen accurate" v2s.  robiwan's link was very informative.  seems like there are a lot of variations of the luke rotj.

i came across this interesting piece.  it has no nipple (like the one protruding out of r2-d2 just before he fires it off to luke), and it kinda like an AFBB v2.

i actually prefer design of the mkiii emitter over that of the mkvi, so if this is just as legit as any of the other lukes, i might consider modeling my future luke rotj after this one, though the neck is kinda fat compared to the hero.  but then again, maybe a screen accurate" v2 is supposed to be fatter.

I think the bottom line is you can start with any Luke ROTJ saber as a base for a V2. Choose the base saber with the style you like the most and then go from there. In the end you will have a V2 that appeals to you.

Heck, you can even do it to a MR FX Luke ROTJ.
