Mace pics and video
« on: June 24, 2005, 12:14:24 PM »
Here's some pictures of the Mace, mostly at night, but there are some daytime ones at the end.  The movie might be a little spotty/blurry, but it had to suffer the encoding from a Quicktime file to an .avi file.  And yes, the pictures really show it to be blue sometimes, but it's closer to the purple in some of the other pictures.  Also, a couple of the later pictures show the blotchiness, or at least one of the red lines (there are two on opposide sides) that go up the length of the entire blade.

Also, I'll take requests for any pictures people might want to see of the Mace, so long as my camera behaves. :)

Enjoy!

Sorry about the first link before. :(  Forgot to capitalize the avi in the filename, but it should work now. :)

The blade is very bright (as long as there are fresh batteries in there), but I was a little disappointed by its less than full purple color at first (more bluish than purple).  However, it began to grow on me, and I'm appreciating the color more and more.  As for the hilt, it does feel a little heavier than a 3 battery model, but it doesn't feel much larger.  I'd say it's about the same girth as the newer models since the 6-battery compartment is longer rather than wider (imagine 2 of the 3 battery compartment's stacked on top of each other).  The hilt is a little longer than the Vader ESB, but maybe by a centimeter.  And the hilt is in fact very "pretty," but take care when you're holding it.  I tried practicing a couple duels with them, and I noticed a little bit of the gold accents beginning to rub off.

As for the red line, I'm actually more inclined to believe that it has blue LEDS with a red lining (in the picture, you can kinda make out a red circle inside the foam with another red line going though the circle).  But whatever the red is, it very well might be a case of it being too close to the foam at the edges.

Actually, it made me cringe each time I hit the blade on the wall (yes, it was a wall), but I figured it'd count as my taps for the day, or the week rather.  If you remember someone posting about a rattling and squeaky blade from hitting a bed, that was me. :(  So it was a double cringe each time I made a clash sound, but my saber thankfully made it out alive (though I don't think I'll try that again).  And I might try just hitting the hilt next time instead of the blade; I remember trying it once or twice but not getting anything, but maybe I wasn't hitting it hard enough.

About the purple, grogTM, they didn't use purple LEDs because I don't think they make them; I could be wrong about this, but it was always my impression.  The blade isn't as purple as this, but more of a lighter, kinda pastel-like version of the purple.  I think the few pictures where it actually has a purple glow is the closest to what it actually looks like, though the picture hides the blotches pretty well.  It's not quite as cool as the real thing, but you'll love it if you have it, even if it takes a little while.

Now that would be pretty cool.  I don't know if they actually do make purple LEDs (you think they would), but it'd be pretty cool to see.  The blade right now is pretty nice, but I wouldn't mind having some real purple in it.

yes that would be absolutely cool....but this is a home-made emprovement....about the "normal" saber......I'm going to pay 150€ (a lot of money in dollars :D )  to have a fx lightsaber, so, if it's not perfect, I'm waiting till MR new releases to have a new one.

pretty good purple vs. outstanding blue or green (obiwan saber or quin-gon saber or what else ;) )....yes I'm waiting :D

(for that time I hope a anakin's lightsaber would be in my hands!)

I actually paid more than 150€ (if converted to dollars) for my Mace, but I love having it, though I hate the hole in my bank account from it.  I don't think they'll really fix the Mace to make it more purple, so this might be as good as it gets from MR.

hey guys, I'm new here.

I ordered a Mace off of FAO too....

Purple LEDs do exist, but as I understand it they are somewhat harder to produce than the standard colors, and quite more expensive...

http://stores.ebay.com/Chi-Wing-LED-product-shop

Look at this guys Ebay page...

100 Super bright Blue LEDs are $30, 50 Purple LEDs are $65.

I think cost was a factor more than anything in choosing the layout that MR did.  However, I have a hard time believing that they couldn't figure out a better solution....I mean, clear LEDs and purple glass paint would've worked too...

if the question is the price...then MR could sell the saber for 140/150$ but with real purple leds....what are 20/30$ for pure realism? :D

It's actually 500 of the ultraviolets for $65, so it'd be about $8 for 64 LEDs (I think there are 64 in a saber blade).  The ultraviolets actually say they're purple in the listing, and there's a picture that could be construed as purple, but I'm not entirely convinced you could use these LEDs in a saber, unless you wanted to make a black light (which would be cool, but not quite a lightsaber).

If only I had the techno-savvy know-how, I'd make my own saber too.  But alas, until then, I'll just keep buying them from MR...

And apparently, purple LEDs do exist, but they can get kinda pricey.  Here's a site that compares a whole bunch of em: http://ledmuseum.home.att.net/ledvio.htm  Some of these actually seem to be solid purples, though also very close to the UV range, so it leaves some hope for modding the Mace.

Dont worry about it dyslexia rules KO.
I think the Windu blade looks just fine. Nice white core glow with a kinda purple light eminating from it.

In pictures, you see a nice white core glow, but you can definitely see the blotchiness from the red and blue mixing together.  Otherwise, it's a cool purple.  Not very purple, but still cool.
