Title: How would you rate ESB?
Post by: Ki-Adi on March 07, 2006, 07:54:18 AM
I gave ESB a 10!!! This one is my favourite out of all of them.

wow ki i too gave this one a 10, it is my favorite. This is my favorite lightsabe duel of the OT and second overall just under Anakin vs Obi Wan

Ya this lightsaber duel I thought was better then ROTJ. It showed how much Luke has progressed. Plus the biggest twist, hoth, dagobah. Come on it has everything. I love bespin. haha
Title: Re: How would you rate ESB?
Post by: Jaden Korr on March 07, 2006, 08:14:57 AM
ya bespin is soo cool i do that board the most on Jedi Outcast cuz i think its the perfect setting for a saber duel, they really need to remake the OT games imagine how cool they could make em now

Ya I know what you mean. I want them to make more star wars games. I have never played outcast. But back to ESB. This one is my favourite and I love the classic blue vs red. The way vader pops out of no where sometimes in their fight. Like did he hold his breath? I mean anyone would be able to hear him sneaking up with that loud breathing hahaha.
Title: Re: How would you rate ESB?
Post by: Jaden Korr on March 07, 2006, 08:23:44 AM
yaaa, and that freezing room was just the perfect stage for that lightsaber duel it was just darkk so all you could really see was the sabers it was soo cool, and when vader started throwing things at luke with force coooool.
Title: Re: How would you rate ESB?
Post by: Ki-Adi on March 07, 2006, 08:27:08 AM
hahaha I made my dad laugh at that part. Luke kept swinging his saber and missing the things that were being thrown at him. I said "wow he must suck at baseball." hahaha

I gave this a 10, it's my favourite.
The best out of all 6 star wars movies.

Another 10.
That would seem about right, it would be difficult for me to choose between ANH and ESB.
The Battle of Hoth- fantastic, thrilling battle to start the film off.
The 'I am you father' scene totally blew me away when I saw it as a kid. I think I had a harder time accepting the truth than Luke did.

Ya haha. I love that part. I was too young to remember that. I watched these when I was like 4. I remember images from them. But I don't remember my reaction to that part. haha

Irvin Kirshner was a brilliant director.  he was the (only?) reason that the Yoda puppet "worked" onscreen.  he never shoved the camera right in the puppet's face and expected it to to do any "acting" (like Lucas in Episode 1).  the camera never lingered; the puppet almost never completes a full line of dialog with its mouth showing; the camera always shoots "around" the puppet and never straight "at" it.  its brilliant.

same with the Han/Leia scene on Bespin right before they get taken to Vader.  brilliant.  as if these two characters can't quite look each other in the eye... the dialog unfolds as the camera peers in from the ceiling and moves around the room.  its doesn't sit motionless right up in the actor's faces so every line of dialog is a close-up.
like Lucas in.. etc.. etc.. hehe.

and the screenplay was also brilliant.   Leigh Bracket for tehWiN.   Best. Screenplay. Ever.

when I saw the "I am your father" scene it hit me like a hammer.  I was numb.  I was (literally) bumping into stuff on the way out of the theater. I could barely function.

ever since then I've been like a sponge for the Star Wars movies.

thats when I became a hopeless fan(atic).

unfortunately, I haven't enjoyed a Star Wars in the same way since.   and now they're all done.  ???

after ESB,  Star Wars just wasn't the same.
the success of the Yoda puppet seemed to encourage George to fill the entire next movie with puppets.  probably because he thought they would "work" onscreen, like Yoda did in (Kirshner's) ESB.  but these were not cool-looking 'ultra-realistic' puppets operated by masters of the art (like Frank Oz) and filmed by a brilliant director (like Kirshner).  these were silly-looking muppets like Salacious Crumb and Admiral Ackbar and that big blue "shmoo-thing" playing the bagpipes (wtf?).

oh, and the robot in Jabba's dungeon, he was the worst:  "..ever since our master got angry with our last protocol droid and dismembered him.." with the camera lingering RIGHT ON ITS FACE the whole time.
((opposite-of-brilliant))  ::)

point is, the success of ESB seemed to give George a lot more freedom to inject his own personality into the next ones (ie: to be 'cute and funny' in a 1950's/bugs-bunny/kind-of-way)  ::)

but at heart,  George's  "1950's-style"  sense of humor/drama/timing..  well.. it really.. just doesn't work for STAR WARS.   (sorry George)

I know Star Wars is supposed to be all about "George Lucas' Vision" but..   I think I'm starting to realise..   I actually fell in love with the work of Leigh Bracket and Irvin Kirshner
(based on characters created by George Lucas).  heh :/

ESB defined "Star Wars" for me.     best. episode. ever.

Shoulda been:
STAR WARS and Irvin kershner filme based on the writings of George Lucas
Title: Re: How would you rate ESB?
Post by: WEDGE ANTILLES on March 07, 2006, 11:21:23 AM
I can't say enough about Kershner.  he was awesome.  after ESb they gave him blank check and told him to pick his next project. he wanted to do a James Bond movie with Sean Connery, which, at the time, was pretty much impossible because Roger Moore had the contract and Connery hadn't played Bond in fifteen years.   but they made it happen.  "Never say Never again".   it was released at the same time as Octopussy (and it made Octopussy look stupid ) ;D

I think ROTJ would have been great had Kirshner directed it.

I give ESB a 10. It's an excellent movie. It does tend to bore me a bit, though, so I still prefer ROTS. I love all the Hoth stuff and the duel... it's the best one of the OT. Even the ROTJ one wasn't nearly as good.

Check this out.  There's a vid that shows there was no vest, just a trick of the light.

Easily a 10, easily.  So much stuff is introduced in ESB.  We get to see Han Solo use a lightsaber, lol.  We meet Yoda for the first time.  Luke furthers his training as a Jedi.  And most importantly we learn that Darth Vader is Luke's father.  Still gets me everytime...lol...fantastic movie in every way you look at it.  I've heard a lot of people say this is their favorite Star Wars movie or favorite movie period so that says a lot.

10/10. This movie IS Star Wars. It has everything. Best characterizations. Best starship battle. Best romance. Best climax and twist. Best lightsaber dual. This movie set the standard for the Star Wars franchise and it has never or ever will be eclipsed.

I gave it a solid 10.  ESB ties as my number one favorite Star Wars film.  The other Star Wars film that it ties with for me is ROTS.  Plus ROTS mirrors ESB in a lot of ways.

This was an excellent film, gotta be one of my favorites. I cannot bring myself to give it a 10 because there was not enough lightsaber stuff, and it had some older glitches and such from the 70s/80s movie era that still bug me.

10 ESB is very Cool and could easily stand on it's own,There's a lot of sequels that can't do that.It had the cliffhanger mode all throughout the movie. It's my favorite movie out of the OT ;D
Title: Re: How would you rate ESB?

This was my third favorite SW movie. Typically because they kept action flowing through the whole movie. The best part in my opinion was the Hoth battle. I didn't care for the part with Yoda up until he lifts Luke's fighter out of the lake. ;D

9/10

one thing that bothers me, on the new DVD version, they redid the scene with vader talking to the emperor via hologram:
in the DVD version, the emperor tells vader that the kid who blew up the death star was the son of skywalker and vader says..
"..How Can This Be!?" as if he's hearing of it for the first time.

BUT,

earlier in the film they LEFT the scene where Vader tells General Veers: "..thats it.  the rebels are there."
Veers:"My Lord. There are so many uncharted settlements.  it could be smugglers, it could be.."
Vader: "THAT is the system.  and I'm sure SKYWALKER is with them!"

 ::)

--> if Vader (and the entire imperial navy) was already looking for "Skywalker" then why would Vader be so surprised to learn of the kid's existence 1/2way through the film,

and/or,

--> if Vader (and the entire imperial navy) was already looking for "Skywalker" then why was the Emperor the last in the entire fleet to know about it? only sensing the kid's existence 1/2way through the film? (and looking like a bit of a Moron, quite frankly,  by calling long distance to "tell" vader something he already knew. and this is the first historical appearance of the emperor and, what..? is he supposed to be 'senile' now? is that really supposed to be our first impression of the emperor in the OT? some guy who only clues into what his ENTIRE FLEET is up to, after the fact? and then acts like its HIS idea?)  :-\

at least the original edit made it seem like they both already knew about Luke, but, suddenly, the "Great Disturbance" came from the fact that Luke had gone to dagobah and found yoda and was now on the path to becoming a jedi, which had only jus5t happened in a previous scene.  (hello!)  the point of the long distance call was:  "...I sense that [skywalker is becoming a powerful threat BECAUSE of events elsewhere in the movie]; the kid must not become a jedi" and the discussion ensues from there: "He's just a boy" etc.

it all makes sense, within the context of its own plot.

but, by rewriting the scene just for the sake of tying it into the PT, the 'new' ESB doesn't make sense anymore.

unless we consider that the Emperor is now Mr. Magoo.  ::)
Title: Re: How would you rate ESB?
Post by: hullbreach on April 16, 2008, 01:09:40 PM
I could be very wrong but I always took the "..How Can This Be!?" line to be an expression of shock, as "how can this be that I didn't sense this myself?", as oppose to questioning, even rhetorically, the veracity of the statement.
Title: Re: How would you rate ESB?
Post by: Sidneyious on April 16, 2008, 01:25:20 PM
ESB is by far IMO the best SW movie.

Ya know I got to thinking after watching ROTJ. Vader said "obi wan was wize to hide her from me".

So its possable that vader knew about luke cause she was pregnant and dident know they were twins.

So Iam guessing that vader knew about luke. about the whole shock thing I dont remember I will have to look at it in a bit.

EDIT

After reviewing this Iam still kinda confused why this move was done.

IS there a posability that it corilates with a book like splinter of the minds eye which was the first EU piece written and was to be made into a movie if star wars was a flop.

Maybe theres another book that might have something to say about this.

Maybe vader knew all along and was making sure that palpy was or wasent playing him for a fool or something.

Iam sure theres a reasion for this change but with my lack of works in the EU I cant formulate a reasion for it.

For me ESB is the best of all of the films it has the dark attitude the awesome lightsaber duel, Hoth and ends on a down note, the perfect middle act.

By far and away the best Star Wars Movie. I think this is quite possibly the greatest sequel ever (and has been voted as such by many online sites), and the one which achieved the impossible in topping A New Hope. Also, is this the only movie ever in which nothing good happens to the hero? I think this is why critics enjoy it so much, because it is an extremely daring movie- it literally is a perfect setup for a third installment. Think about it, the rebels have thier huge victory in IV, but just like the title of V suggests, the Empire STRIKES down upon the alliance with all thier might. And because of this, everybody is DYING to see episode VI, because they're all so eager to see how our heroes come out of this one. I wasn't around at the time, but from what I gather (from my dad) "I am your father" sent shockwaves around the world, and really gave everybody a cliffhanger for episode VI. Like the whole movie, from the battle of Hoth begginning, was building up to "Vader's trap", like a beautiful creschendo which culminated in the most shocking of revelations. Then our hero goes home with his tail between his legs, to regroup; the Empire having scored te ultimate equaliser. Undoubtably the greatest Cliffhanger in cinema history.

If you haven't already been able to tell, I rate Empire a 10. It's the one most critics love- from the evil and terrifying performace of James Earl/Prowse which cemented Vader as the all time greatest villain, to the breathtaking battle scenes on Hoth, to the witty banter between Solo/Leia/Lando/Chewie, to the chilling scenes on Bespin. On many people's all time film lists, Empire is a true masterpiece. I am not such a huge fanboy that I can't pick holes in Star Wars films- as my other reviews attest to; and undoubtably Return of the Jedi will soon fall victim to a little criticism as soon as I finish this review- but it is simply that, with Empire, I am unable to. Even the score is probarbly John Williams' best work.

Best part: The moment before the Bespin duel, where Luke enters the chamber, and Vader's silhouette can just be seen shrouded in darkness: "You have learned much young Skywalker... but you are not a Jedi yet". Luke must face his destiny, and in that one chilling moment, Vader is the most evil being in the whole universe. Truly wonderful cinema, which I wish I was around to see on the big screen :-\

This is the one which makes Star Wars to me.

A perfect 10.
This was the movie that got me into Star Wars, and I've been hooked since. Name any other movie from the 80's and the special effects pale in comparision. It's not only the best sequel of all time but, IMHO, by far the best of the six...and I think it had a LOT to do with the director.
Leia: "I love you."
Solo: "I know."
Enough said.

Hoth, T-47s, AT-ATs, the bloomin' Executor, the asteroid field (!), Dagobah, Yoda, Luke's training, Luke in the cave, Yoda raising the X-wing, Lando, Bespin's trap, Han in carbonite, the carbon chamber duel, Vader's bold announcement, the narrow escape...
...What wasn't there to love about this movie?

Title: Re: How would you rate ESB?
Post by: Juansith on July 17, 2009, 09:19:06 AM
I give him a perfect 10,is my favorite move ever.
I give 10 reasons why ESB is a 10:

1) I am your father

2) The imperial walkers scene

3) The asteroid Field ("they would be crazy to follow us")

4) Boba Fett  ("Hes no good to me dead")

5) Cloud City Bespin landing sequence

6) The most romantic dialogue in film history.. "i love you" - "i know"

7) Aside from E.T, ANH, i think ESB is the biggest accomplishment in a music score in film history, and the best for John Williams.

8) The whole Dagobah sequences are poetry. The relationship between Luke and Yoda. Master and Apprentice. Do,or do not...there is no try. Giving the final punch with one of the most amazing meaningful scenes of all time: Luke striking Vader. Luke versus his fear.

9)Another scene from Dagobah, when Yoda reminds Luke that "size matters not", and resurfaces the drowned X-wing with one of the best answers in human history:
Luke- "i..i dont..i dont believe it!"
-Yoda- That,is why you fail.

10) The fact that THE MOST AMAZING FANTASY FILM EVER MADE DIDNT NEED OF ANY CG CRAP LIKE MOST FILMS THESE DAYS,NO CG YODA,NO CG ASTEROIDS,NO CG CHARACTERS,NO  CG AT-ATS.

... UNTIL GEROGE DECIDED ESB  WAS TOO GOOD TO NOT RUIN IT AND MADE THE REVISED SPECIAL EDITION BY CHANGING BOBA FETTS VOICE, ADDING CG ELEMENTS WHICH DIDNT NEED....AND EVEN THOUGH HE TRIED TO RUIN IT..HE FAILED....THATS HOW GOOD THIS MOVIE IS..

And  i tell you,If George wants to ruin something, he will, and he does.

Well,just my 2 cents.

I love the original version. I can forgive most of the tweaks in the Special Edition. But when I heard the sound bite of the Emperor screaming at the end of Return of the Jedi added to the scene of Luke's leap of faith in the first version of Special Edition Empire Strikes Back a little piece of my childhood wept briefly & died.
I was glad to see it was removed from the recent DVD version. Episode V can return to it's rightful place as my favourite part of the saga again. 10  ;D

I gave ESB a 10 for lots of different reasons.

It was very well written and directed. Secondly is that it made more sense to me compared to all the rest of the Star Wars movies. I'll explain in detail if possible. Everything in ESB, characters and what-not were all struggling to do things (like we all do in real life). Nothing worked according to plan and the rebels were forced to improvise.

The bad guys seemed to win at every turn and all characters just kept getting deeper and deeper in trouble. Then the big bomb. Vader is the father. Ultimate good guy is the son of the ultimate bad guy. Hand is cut off, Han frozen and even C-3PO is disassembled. Like I said though. Realistic compared to always having the good guys win.

So much win in this movie. It makes me wonder if the director is still alive and if so......why not do another one with GL.

ESB is hands down my most favorite of all the movies. its got a great balance of politics and action.

I would have given it an 11 if it was an option

this movie inspired events in the prequels that wouldn't have happened otherwise.
like, when vader uses the torture of han and leia to get luke's attention.. how did he know this would work?
also, when yoda says luke is "too old" ..  they never tell us 'why'.

(there's a lot of unanswered stuff in ESB which begs a backstory) ;)

-->  turns out, the jedi aren't supposed to have loved ones.  they are taken from their families at infancy.
so Vader was, quite possibly, the only Jedi to even know about this quirk of the force.

turns out, the jedi made their fatal error when they trained anakin in Ep1, as per quigon's wishes.
Anakin WAS too old.  he was old enough to know his loved ones.  old enough to feel their pain from across the galaxy.

(who knew?  not obiwan or windu. they never knew their mothers.  obiwan said: "bah.  dreams pass in time". he had no clue)
(Yoda said "bah.  always in motion is the future.  best to ignore it".  these jedi had no loved ones)

anakin learned about it the hard way .. and then 20 years later he used it against Luke (!) while Yoda and Obiwan were STILL training Jedi "too young".

*facepalm*

in a way, the entire prequel trilogy feels like a checklist of plot points left unexplained from the OT, which were addressed in "point form" by the PT's

(( I only wish Alec Guinness had left out the line about "best starpilot in the galaxy" , so we could do without the buzz-droid-scene))   ::) *sigh*

I gave this a solid 10.  I love ROTJ because of the new ships, Luke's new lightsaber, speederbikes, etc.  But when it comes down to a deep storyline, ESB has it.  I love the lightsaber dual in Bespin, it was very dark, Very haunting.  The part where Luke takes a hit to Vader's shoulder armor and the sparks flew was awesome, it was like I took a piece of you.  Then Vader returned the favor and cut Luke's hand off, with fierce solitude.  "Luke I Am Your Father" will go down as a shocking moment in cinema history....Very Awesome indeed.  The snowspeeders were awesome too, the battle on Hoth was great.  Yoda looked very real, again, there was no CGI, just pure creativity and hard work.  We need those days back!!!  I also enjoyed the comedy elements in this movie also, that is what makes it enjoyable too, the light-hearted moments.  Perfect Movie-I could watch this Any day of the week ;D

here's another off the same list:   it always seemed out of character for vader to stop bobafett from firing on chewie during the carbon freeze scene...   but now, suddenly, out of nowhere, vader is 3po's daddy.

now: rewatch the scene.

boba fett levels his blaster JUST as threepio begins screaming "no! stop! I'm not ready to die!".   in the context of prequel-anakin, this would be the part where vader first recognizes the droid hanging on chewie's back.  he knows its his droid.  he doesn't quite understand the connection to the princess (yet), so he's gonna take prisoners and sort it out later:"Calrissian. take the princess and the wookie to my ship. I am altering the deal". (now we know why he altered the deal:  it all happened when threepio started screaming).

its almost as if they threw that 'anakin-creates-threepio' nonsense into the prequels , just to explain a certain scene in the OT (which seemed out of character the first time around).   the entire prequel trilogy is like an incidental list of band-aid explanations to fill holes in the OT (which didn't need to be filled).   when you string them all together, you can them "movies".  I guess.

((although, phantom menace lacks a protagonist, so it really doesn't make sense AS a movie.   in ANH, the protagonist was clear: with the exception of the first ten minutes, the camera follows luke exclusively.  luke is someone the audience can relate to. he guides us through a galaxy far away, and leads the audience on a journey;  in TPM there is no clear protagonist.  the audience is wandering around without a guide)).  :-\

perfect 10, i can watch this movie over and over again (which i do). The tone, plot, emotion, drama, comedy and action are all balanced and never seem out of place or forced. The effects are brilliant and the whole experience seems real, something the prequals should have realised, apparently ROTS was "dark" well it has nothing on the cave scene or the first moment Vader confronts Luke in cloud city. They should never have touched the original edit apart from maybe some effects like making the fuselage on the speeders solid instead of opaque. I cringe at the updated vader/emperor scene as well as the change in Fetts accent.

ESB is leagues ahead of any other SW movie in every way

Perfect Movie!!! Wouldn't change a thing...except...in the new version the new lines Vader said on his way back to his shuttle on Bespin after his battle with luke and loolsing him were no where near as powerful as the original. The original lines were short and he was obviously pissed when he said "bring me my shuttle". The new line seemed more like "oh well, ladida"

I love this movie... it has the best of everything - acting, plot, character development, etc.  Classic scenes like the battle on Hoth, the asteroid field, training with Yoda, and of course the final duel really just make this one of my favorite movies of all time.  10/10.

Of course I gave ESB a 10.

This movie opened my mind to the world of Sci-Fi! I love the grit that this movie emanated, and Darth Vader made me want to be a bad guy from the moment he cuts Lukes hand off and then reveals that he is his father... Simply genius! It also showed how versatile and tough Lord Vader really was.

The first SW movie I've ever seen! The best SW movie I've seen! And a very good movie by itself, taken out of context as a standalone film.

10/10

The greatest movie of all time.  A 10 doesn't do it justice.

Oh gee. At a kind of loss for words. A 10 for sure. Best of its trilogy, and indeed of the saga as well. The film to judge the others by. And one of the all-time greatest films ever, as well as the crowning achievement of Lucas's entire film career. Can't really put my finger on any one particular part that sold me... I love every last second of its well paced 129 minute run-time. Saw it first in '84 when I was 3, and in theaters for the first time when the Carmike theater ran a matinee in '86, still a full 3 years before I even knew there was A New Hope. I even saw Jedi before Hope. Guess thats why I'm biased against Episode IV, though its still better Jedi. And Menace. And Clones. Hopefully Disney takes a good look at what he did right in Empire before they mess up the sequels (with little kids, rabbit-lizard alien retards, force-channeling bacteria, and silly sappy romances).

Best movie of the series by far. The Luke/Vader duel near the end was epic! The Hoth battle in the beginning really set the tone as well. We got to see Yoda for the first time(at that time anyway). Despite all of their bickering you could really see Leia's love for Han near the end before the carbonite freezing. This movie really had it all and defined a whole series!

I already said that ESB gets a 10 from me, though I failed to specify why. The Imperial victory at Hoth really showed just how deep in bantha fodder the Rebel Alliance is. The plot twist was excellent and unexpected. Lando's change of heart was moving though predictable. Obi-Wan's ghost made it feel as though he wasn't truly dead.Yoda managed t be amusing and wise at the same time. Finally, Han being frozen in Carbonite left an excellent cliffhanger.
