Title: Mandalorian Lightsaber (update)
Post by: Amptrooper on July 09, 2009, 03:47:39 PM
So I bought that saber from MH a few posts below.  He worked with me on getting a really nice looking amber LED. I spent the next few day customizing. Let me know what you think. It is a Madalorian lightsaber based off of a comic character that a few of us here are working on (still need another artist). The main character is pictured below as well.

I am going to add accent lights after I get a CF 4.1. I want to try to get the Mandalorian skull to light up. It's going to be hard to do. Not quite sure how to tackle that one.
Here are some updated pictures. I added a ruby jem button.
Also pictured are some other sabers I mad way back durring TPM.

Ruby button or no?

That is so awesome it's scary! :o :o I love the Mando skull. Perhaps you could dremel it out and then place an accent LED behind it to light it up? ;) ;)

The skull and the stripes are dremeled it is just so tight to the main body I don't know how to go about placing the leds. I thought about using a film behind the skull and light it bottom up. I don't know.

That is very cool 8)  I am not usually a big fan of concept sabers, but you pulled this one off well.

Wow, that is breathtaking. Perfect colour scheme for the saber. And the skull is fantastic.

That's some serious Dremel-fu you've shown there.

Nicely done.

The skull and the stripes are dremeled it is just so tight to the main body I don't know how to go about placing the leds. I thought about using a film behind the skull and light it bottom up. I don't know.

One way to do it would be to cut away a window behind the skull, and replace the wall with a semi-tranluscent material (a slice from a round shampoo bottle works nice). Then, wire in an accent LED or two behind it to illuminate the skull cutouts. When the saber is off, the material will block people from seeing into the battery back.

There is a brand of shampoo out there that uses a dark orange-ish bottle that is semi-transparent. A 5mm white LED shining behind this material would match your Amber LED the closest, off the top of my head. Try to stay away from films, since they are flimsy and can crinkle. The semi-trans plastic stuff is a good bet because not only is it flexible (so it stays in place easier), but these days you can find bottles molded in a variety of colors and levels of transparency, and they are also relatively strong.

Good luck with it. Even without the illuminated skull it is still a very impression saber.

I sent an email to you MH. With the polished hilt. Let me know if you can't find. That would be two emails this week that have not made it. Last one caused some problems. Thats what happens when your using a Lap Top from 1998.

The brass gives the saber a great wight. It feels very balanced even without the blade.

Thanks all for the kind words! Very humbling!  Anyone have an idea for securing the emitter shroud with out showing screws? I thought about epoxy but I think that wouldn't hold up. It's on fairly well but I would like it to be more secure.

The saber looks great, for the first custom job I've seen on this forum its dazzling. It looks like it has had lots of love and care poured into its making. Makes me want to go start a war or blow up a planet in its honor. *thumbs up*
