The LDM "obscure object" saber challenge
« on: May 30, 2009, 01:55:14 PM »
Well, some of the comments on Cingere gave me an idea.  I mean, what can we really build a saber out of?  Here is your chance to challenge me.  Post your ideas here and lets see what I come up with!  I will then auction it off for charity.

Here is an example of a suggestion:

mmmm, ..I THOUGHT I commented on this one.

It's getting harder and harder to be unique in the saber hobby, .......that's not a bad thing, ....there are only so many things you can do with a saber hilt, but this little saber here represents that through use of unconventional parts and supplies, we can still on occasion put out something completely different and new.

And I also think that if you give LDM a cardboard tube, one shoe, a twig and some pocket lint, ......he'll not only make a saber out of it, ....it will be quite stunning!

Congrats LDM, ....always one step ahead.

Here was another suggestion:

I'd like to see what he comes up with!

Give him a:
Cardboard tube
One shoe
One Twig
Some Pocket Lint
His tools
Luxeon III
Battery pack
Heatshrink and wire (all the stuff for internal electronics)
Golf Ball
Polycarbonate blade

There's your challenge LDM! I want to see what you come up with! ;D

Let the ideas flow and lets have some fun!  Also feel free to challenge (throw the gauntlet down as it were) any other sabersmith as well! ;)

I like the way you think Darth_Call 8). I challenge Do-Clo to the same standard, Do Clo vs. LDM "Obscure Object" Saber Challenge. May the best sabersmith win!

Also, great idea on the auction for charity!

Hey all,

I am new to this so if the idea was already done, SORRY! Ok crystal chambers and pommels are very cool things. BUT what about a saber with an opening to the core (like some of you have now) showing the crystal from the outside glowing with all of it''s brilliance. Now replace the crystal with a mini 1.6" Plasma globe I found at an auto parts store after reading a blog last week. So plasma globe in the handle or in a machined out extension and small enough to fit in a hilt. That's what I think is going to be in my saber. Hint Hint DC/MJ.

Have a great weekend everyone!!!!! KNP

How about a laser pistol lightsaber?

One that has pistol sounds, then you can pop in a blade for the saber part.

I am talking about the weapon from Ulysses 31.  (Yes, I am that old)

I second that one. Loved that blaster/lightsaber thing when I was a kid (gosh getting so old as well...)

How about using small diameter side emitting fiber optic wire in conjunction with a blinking led strip or two to make a kind of "electrifyed" crystal chamber.

Good replies so far guys and I am getting some good ideas.  I will give this a month or so and let the suggestions pile up before I decide what to do (I may do a poll)

That's a great idea Jasher Kain but you can't fly with nail clippers these days.  ;D

I used the tooth brush attachment from a Oral-B sonicare - does that count?

And the colored translucent toothebrush handles would make great crystals - dude, this is totally a feasible idea. ;)  Maybe not the bristles...

You could use

A mag light
a guarded latching switch form TCSS,
a battery pack
a box of toothpicks
some chewed gum
a foot long piece of coaxial cable
heat shrink
a lux III cyan
a dull pocketknife
and last, but not least, a piece of PEX tubing for a blade, as well as Christmas gift wrap for "magic" film. :D ;)

I'm thinking about doing the maglight part.

Here's a few...
start w/ a lux (wattage of your choice) and a bare sink tube (once again, your choice of diameter)
1 36" polycarb tube
1 roll of poly wrap

Any ONE of the following:

VCR

DVD player

any one of the old cartridge systems ie: Nes, SNES, 64, Genesis, Atari etc...

an old printer

a vaccum cleaner

any of the above would work.  I have done the vacuum cleaner and vcr one already, and they turned out rather nice!  All the resistors, wires and the materials to make a battery pack/chassis can be found in any of the above items w/ the exception of maybe the vacuum for the resistors.  If I remember correctly, I think I yanked the ones I used for my vacuum saber from an old cordless phone.

Have fun!

Also, if you can take some quick video of the process, I'll feature this build on "Junkyard Sci-Fi".  First episode airs next month people!!!

Peace,
Silkvein
