Title: Custom Obi Hybrid saber run w/ real copper and brass thin neck sign up thread.
Post by: CHEWBACCA on July 08, 2014, 07:58:47 PM
OK sorry for the delay but I was waiting on a couple of things before I posted.

Everything is clear so I will be offering the run.  The saber will be based on this saber:

(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fmandysbabies.com%2FMHSOBIhybrid%2FMHSOBIdone2.jpg&hash=e9d5d8c34188348342b66c409b075b1948fb028e) (http://mandysbabies.com/MHSOBIhybrid/MHSOBIdone2.jpg)

Hybrid MHS Obi with real brass and copper thin neck...run interest posted page 3 (http://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/index.php?topic=43707.0)

The run will be limited to 10 and if it fills up then its full.  If not I will probably leave it open for a week before I close it and order the parts.  If its closed and someone wants in later (if it doesn't reach 10) please PM me and we will discuss the possibility.  Once I close the order and get deposits I will be ordering all the materials I need.  I will post progress pics in this or a new thread.

I am offering a few options and when you post you are ready to pay the deposit you will need to specify what the options you want are.

The saber will be $550 plus shipping.  To be on the run you will need to paypal me half of the money ($275) and I will ask for the remainder when I am finished.  I am hopeful to finish it by the end of September but do not be surprised if I am able to finish before (a lot depends on work and how smoothly my machine work goes).

To secure your spot post in this thread that you are ready to pay the deposit and what your options are.  I will PM you after that (when I am on so do not worry if there is a little delay) and give you my paypal address to make the deposit.  I think that is the best way so I do not have to refund anyone just in case it goes over 10.

OK here are the options and I want you to list them just like the example I will give below.

First option is the emitter.  You can have the emitter I did on the other saber which is blade holder 16 or you can have the more traditional blade holder 8 (but it will be cut to fit over my blade holder like the other saber).

Second option is the grenade.  You can have either 6 or 8 groove (these are the grooves that go from the top to the bottom not the circular grooves).  If you want just want to be different and use a different number of grooves that is doable as well if I have the correct spacer (I have 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12 and 24) for my rotary table.

Third option is the side greeblies.  I have someone machining the star for me so that is an option.  You can have no greeblies, a star and copper stud, a transistor and copper stud, or two transistors.

Fourth option is the LED.  You can have either a rebel or a cree.  The difference is the color.  The Rebel is a light blue (kind of sky blue color) and the cree is a more pure blue.

Fifth option is the activation card.  You can have either the PJ brass activation card or a bubble strip.  If you choose the bubble strip it will be silver under it (aluminum tape).  Talking with the owner of the other saber the copper wears where it contacts the button (from the pressure even though it has protection under it).

Sixth option is D ring, Covertec or NO belt clip.

Seventh option is the FoC color.  You can have W, G, A, R, or it can be full power (all blue no separate FoC color...just flicker during FoC)

The sabers will come with a CS2 but if you want a different board you can PM me for a quote.
They will take a 7/8th blade but will not come with one.

Here is an example of how I want you to list your preferences.

MH
blade holder 16
6 grooves
star and copper stud
Rebel (light blue) LED
brass activation card
covertec
W FoC

Ready to pay deposit.

Please keep in mind that once you choose your options they are not to be changed especially after I order parts.  If you really want to change it BEFORE I order parts you can PM me to talk about it (do not want changes in the post that I may miss).

When you pay your deposit please put your forum name in the PayPal notes so I can keep up with who the deposit came from.  Also use normal payment for goods.

FAQs---I will add questions I get in case others have the same question.  I try to remember to cover all this stuff but forget and instead of redoing the main text I will just add the question and answer below.

For the most part look at the other saber I built to answer most questions.  It will be basically the same except for the options you choose, sound board (including RGB and external RICE port) and the copper on the bubble strip.

---will it have in hilt recharge?  Yes it will have a 2.1mm recharge port in the pommel.

---Is FoC extra?  No it is included in the price.

---will it have touch plate activation?  Yes but I prefer to call it pressure plate activation ;) .  I do not do any clamp/card type switches without using this method.

If I was interested in an as close to canon Obi-Wan ROTS saber, what options would be recommended?

I would say

blade holder 8
6 grooves
star and copper stud
tri cree
brass activation card
covertec

I intended for it to be more of a custom but with that mix it is a fair interpretation of the ROTS saber I think.  Not exact by any means but not a bad interpretation.

I think blade holder 16 is more accurate than bh8.
Why many people select BH8?

I feel that this design can lend itself to the possibility of Obi's continuous modifications to his saber as time goes on leading to the end saber in ANH.

For those that want reference to the ROTS saber, here is the MR LE version:

(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.yourprops.com%2Fmovieprops%2Fdefault%2Fyp4f94af3ed2f984.54015599%2FStar-Wars-Revenge-Of-The-Sith-Obi-Wan-Kenobi-Lightsaber-3.jpg&hash=5f44a9c685a6fe121c3ae75a2078c767011c78e0)

(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.yourprops.com%2Fmovieprops%2Foriginal%2Fyp4f94af3e61d748.75072993%2FStar-Wars-Revenge-Of-The-Sith-Obi-Wan-Kenobi-Lightsaber-1.jpg&hash=595a4e1864e06bc369ce0241b578fac39ff62fe4)

 8)

And I agree, Chewbacca, those are probably the right specs to go with to get as accurate to ROTS as possible.  Blade holder 8 is the most accurate of the holders for ROTS after looking at the pic above and the pic of blade holder 8 on TCSS.  :)

Just remember that you can choose whatever you want (within the options I mention) if you feel it makes it more accurate to the prop but it is not my intent at all to make this an accurate prop.

It is a cool custom saber that is fun to hold, spin and play with that just happens to have a lot of cues from the OBI saber (because the Obi sabers are among my favorites).

I understand why people want to make it as accurate as possible but my fear is that people will be disappointed in its accuracy when that is not the intent of the saber in the first place.  If you want a 100% screen accurate saber this is not the saber for that.  That may not be the best selling point but I just want to be honest with people and if they want accuracy I would rather them NOT buy than to be upset they did because its not accurate enough.

I think Cad-Bayne has the right idea on this as being an in between or even one he may have thrown together over the years etc.

Agreed! The cool thing about this run is that we are getting the choice to make the saber our own interpretation of what WE think makes for the best elements of the Obi-Wan ROTS/ANH elements.
As for me, I think the #16 blade holder is a bit more elegant. After the Mustafar battle with Ani, one could surmise that Obi's saber took a beating and that's when the emitter was changed for the more accurate #8 holder.  The fact that MH is giving us these options makes this run all the better!

What is closest setup to ANH?

With the options available...

BH8
8 Grooves
2 transistors
Rebel (light blue)
bubble strip
D ring

But keep in mind the ANH has a lot of differences that are not offered.

Graflex clamp (though that may be possible if you are OK with the TCSS clamp)
solid brass neck instead of brass and copper
windvane instead of a solid neck ring

Just a quick update since its been a while since I posted.

I have all the raw material I need for the custom neck pieces and grenade.  When I placed the order with TCSS some of the components I needed were out of stock and I asked Tim to hold the shipment until the other parts come in to save on shipping.  Once those come in I will purchase them and have Tim send the entire order.

Just a quick update for everyone since its been a little bit since I posted.  Unfortunately it has not been a good month and a half with work.  I have been out of town almost every day this month so I am behind on things.

That said I am winding down on a couple of projects that were left and will be moving onto these within the next couple of weeks.  I am sorry for the delay but unfortunately that is the way my work cycles sometimes.  I am hopeful that it slows down some so I can knock them out quickly.  I originally said I would start in September but I was hoping it would be earlier in the month rather than later.

If anyone has any questions or concerns please feel free to email or PM me.

OK guys I know I have PMed everyone on the run a while back but wanted to publicly post updates to make it easier.

As I mentioned with the new contracts my company has gotten I have just been swamped for the last 6 months or so but I have a little help now (new tech south of me) and although I will still be much busier I am getting a little more free time to work on these.  I do apologize that it went out of my time frame quickly but I did not know when I started the run that we would be getting these new contracts that would try to work me to death (or I would have never started the run).

That said here are my updates so far.

The necks are done (brass and copper) and right now I am working on the emitters (part of the emitters is done) and grenades.  I have to get some new brass for the neck ring because I got the wrong size when I ordered (didn't realize until I started machining).  What I have will work but is just too big and will cause too much waste of material and time.  I will get that ordered today or tomorrow so I can get them knocked out.  I hope to have those finished in a couple of weeks and then start the installs.  I am going to push to try and get these knocked out as soon as I can.  I am "hopeful" that I can have them all finished and start shipping by the end of Feb and that is a realistic goal if things stay like now (steady but not overwhelming like before).  I appreciate the patience that everyone has shown through the delays.  It has taught me that I may probably never do a run on my own again unless I get a different job.

As always feel free to PM or email me if you have any concerns or questions.

I will post some pics this weekend.

OK here is a progress pic.  I know it doesn't look like much but it represents hours of machining time for me.  turning down the copper and brass pieces, parting them, threading them, grooving them all in the exact same place and cutting them down to the exact same size.  And of course there is the blade holder that takes a little time as well (but its only one so far).

The neck ring is not the correct one.  It is one I made a while back when making the first hybrid saber.  The dimensions are just off a little.  I am just showing it on the neck piece for reference.

(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fmandysbabies.com%2FMHSOBIhybrid%2FHybridprogress1.jpg&hash=6f7ad66750e76e679f92b30c9f15e024a8c7df9f) (http://mandysbabies.com/MHSOBIhybrid/Hybridprogress1.jpg)

I hope to have all the blade holders done by the end of next weekend and then I will move to the grenade section.  Once the new brass piece comes in I can finish the neck ring.

again thanks for the patience and hopefully I will be able to continue the progress I am making now.

After I posted my last update picture with blade holder style #8 I had one of the people on the run PM me and say they didnt like how the emitter looked with all the steps and asked if I could do something about it.  I did and am offering this to all who have blade holder #8.  If you have blade holder #16 and want to change I would have to charge extra since I have already bought the #16 holders and modified them.

You will lose the amount of blade depth of that last step in the original design but its just a little bit shorter than the BH #16.  I will be drilling the hole for the blade later and will give an exact blade depth measurement then.

Please post here if you want me to change your BH #8 to style #2 (what I am calling the custom version).  If you do not post I will assume you want to keep the emitter un-modified.

Here is the original pic with the unmodified BH #8 (click images for larger views)

And here is my modified version that looks more like the ANH version of the Obi emitter.

You originally picked BH#8 (on page 2 where you posted your options).

There is no charge if you already have a BH#8

The only reason I need to charge more for those that chose BH#16 is because I have to buy a new BH#8 for them (since I already bought and modified the BH#16s).

Hi Michael,

When you a get a chance to picture all three style holders on their neck assemblies, I may change mine (hard to tell until I can see comparisons).

LOL, your making too many options for us (which is a great thing!)

Thanks again!

You are going to have to look at the pics of each one to decide because I am not going any further on the blade holders until I know what everyone wants.  Right now the only thing I can give you a side by side comparison on is the modified #8 and regular#16.

I will give the blade depth differences later.

Thank you, that is fine with me and I appreciate the comparison shot of #8 vs #16 whenever you get to it.

Well I had hoped to have a big update with the grenade section and such but it is taking a bit longer than I had hoped.  I have been dealing with some major dizzy issues for almost 2 weeks due to an ear infection (scared me a couple weeks ago when it first hit me and I thought I was going to pass out while driving)...I seem to be over it now but it has slowed down my work on the machines.

Since I promised an update a couple weeks ago though I will at least show the neck rings.  Hopefully I can get a lot done on the grenades this week.

Not much I know but its slowly coming together.

Thanks for the pics, looks great. I hope when you can, you will post a picture of the #8 and #16 blade holders, can't wait to them.

Thanks again.

Thanks, I am better though I did have a couple of small dizzy spells yesterday as I was driving...not bad ones thankfully (it was a 3.5hr trip one way).  I have an appointment with an ENT on the 30th so hopefully he can pinpoint what is going on.  At least its not happening all the time like it was so I can work on things I need to (and actually go to work...I had to take a lot of time off).  Its strange to think that something going on with your ears can cause strange issues.  At least all my blood work came back OK...no diabetes (I was scared it was that), thyroid problems or anything else.

It will be a little bit before the pics you request.  I started on the grenade instead of doing the blade holders.  I may try to do at least one blade holder this week so I can put it beside the other one for you.

Hope you feel better Michael!

This run is turning out wickedly awesome! But please take care of yourself... and not for the sake of the run... but for family and yourself. Life is too precious.

Thanks Scott.  I am doing better and have only had one dizzy spell in the last 3 days.  I see the ENT Monday and hopefully he can see what the general doc missed in my ears and get me fixed up completely.

On the run.  I stopped on the grenade section and decided to get the blade holder knocked out first.  With that I am able to show the side by side pics that SS1 was looking for.

Please keep in mind that the blade holder part is longer on one so ignore the extra part sticking out the top and just focus on the length stopping at the end of the MHS piece (which is where I will be trimming it back to).

below you can see the blade depth difference by how the MHS pieces align.

I hope to have all the blade holders finished and drilled out for the blade and LED by the end of the weekend but we will see how it goes.

Thank you for posting the pictures Michael!  I'm changing to Blade holder #8 (modified to ANH style) and I edited my original post on page 1.
I realize I'll need to pay extra for a new blade holder.

You mentioned a difference in blade depth between these two holders? Will that effect blade brightness due to where the led is mounted or how secure the blade will be? I know these are not duelers, just want to be able to swing it around and not have the blade feel loose.

Thank you again.

well it is knocking the already slim blade depth back some but it should still hold secure but until I bore it out and test it I am not 100% sure.

I will get with you on the extra cost and payment later today.

Ditto, could I please pay the extra to change my blade holder to #8 ANH style?  It looks awesome!  Updated my OP

Michael
I was wondering if you might consider selling some of these parts by themselves?  I have a Karbanth Obi ANH hilt I am trying to convert to a Episode 3 Obi.  The Korbanth has a 7/8th inch copper tube that connects the emmitter to the grenade.  The thin neck you have created is the best I've seen and I don't think anyone has created buttons as accurate yours.

I am sorry there are no more spots available.  I am way behind on just getting these done and I cant really add any more to it.

trebuche...I am not sure how I missed your post, I am really sorry for the late reply.  I may or may not have some spare parts to sell but I will not be doing any fitting or trying to make it work with another saber.  IF and that is a big IF I do have anything it will be after the run is over and it will be as is with the person getting it responsible to make it work with their own saber.

Greypanther wants to buy my spot Cheebacca but he was wondering if he buys it can the specs be changed to
blade holder 8
6 grooves
star and copper stud
tri cree
brass activation card
covertec

I am not sure what I picked when the run opened so they might be those already ?

Thanks

Ohh man, that looks great! I'm I for your V2. Darthvix was in for the #8 so can this be done?

Thanks!

Thanks,  It was never really vertigo and it was hard to describe.  It went away for the most part but would come back every now and then.  I finally got an answer to what the problem may be though (after going to a ton of doctors without a solution earlier in the year and thinking I was just crazy) and found out last week after a HIDA scan (because I was having chest pain but my heart checked out OK) that my gallbladder is not functioning at all (0% function).  My guess is that it was failing earlier in the year which was causing the majority of the strange feeling issues and just recently failed completely...that is just a guess though and I have 0 medical training lol.

I go see the surgeon on Wednesday and we will talk about what to do from there (more than likely remove it or possibly try medication to thin the bile and see if that helps it start working again). Sorry if that was TMI lol

I will put you down on the run.  Everyone else I will probably be sending out long overdue PMs in the next few days to discuss the run and its long overdue completion.
