The Old Republic Sith saber: My next project
« on: October 19, 2012, 07:56:21 AM »
Now that the Darth Malgus Saber is done (http://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/index.php?topic=37062.0) a friend of mine gave me this picture of the Dual bladed Sith Sabers from the Old Republic.

He suggested i make the bottom one... and well challenge accepted.

I have an idea on how to do the center chamber which is kind of like a plasma lamp... but have any of you seen a plasma lamp in a tubular form? more importantly one that its about 1-1/4 inch in diameter ? LOL... ok maybe its too much to ask...

Ill start with the basic stuff of the TCSS shelf then ill move on to the customizations... in the mean time ill think on how to do the plasma tube.

Thoughts? thanks.

@aaron506:  i believe that is just a widget (mac software) but thanks anyways.

@ Rusty: i know... i would love too... just need to do one at a time.

Anyways if i dont find a plasma tube that can be powered up with li-ions then ill have to simulate as much as i can the lightning tube.

Let's see what happens.

For the bottom one, Cannibal might have a good lead for a plasma tube

Yeah, after Cannibal posted that we were going to pick one of those up and try it to do the very same saber the OP was doing but never found the time :'(.  I'd be interested to see what happens with this build :).  I've always thought that was a cool staff ;D.

Thanks for the link, totally missed that one.

In parallel (while i find a source of a plasma tube) im planning on simulating the lightning by doing the following

1. A frosted tube on the outside, let say i use a 1" thin wall blade tube and sand it... the idea is that its not transparent so you cant tell whats inside.
2. Make individual lightning bolts out of a translucent plastic (3d printed in shapeways of course) make several paterns that connect from end to end. on the end they would have a sleeve for an LED. Think of it as fiber optic nerves. I know that eventually each beam will not carry the light all the way trough but if i place the LED's in several spots and light them up at  the right time it might work.
3. LED's everywhere and make a customized controller for them... a simple LED random sequencer at high speeds. This will not be controlled by the soundboard because it would be too much to handle.

So its tricky but doable... not as good looking as a plasma tube but good enough to impress a few kids.

I think ARKM did a version of that one as a stunt, IIRC.

I suggest a clear 1 1/4" polycarbonatel with corbin film. They have several thicknesses at mcmastercarr.
1 1/4"   1"   1/8"
1 1/4"   1 1/8"   1/16"
I am guessing you will use 4(?) steel rods for the support?

For the lightning effect, how about side emitting fiber-optics? They could be run from an audrio controller. I'm not sure if the FO cable can be crimped at the angles needed for it to look like lightening. :-\
The FO could be glued to the corbin film :)

Good luck with the project!

yeah you are right 1 -1/4 would be better.. yes ill be using 4 steel rods around the tube... these will need to be strong.

I see... i could lay flat the corbin film and glue the FO's in different patterns and then just roll it... thanks

I think ill try that.. ill go hunt the side emitting FO's

Thanks Jango

Yeah, I made the top one as an empty stunt for someone making a Star Wars fan film.

I would love to see the third one made.  That would be pretty sweet.  Good luck with the build.
