Help!! Yoda Fx rubber grip turned sticky
« on: August 01, 2009, 01:14:18 AM »
I just bought a Master Replicas yoda fx lightsaber which was mint in box (sealed) .

To my nightmare, after i opened the box, the rubber grip of the lightsaber was sticky and i believe it is eroding.

Any advice?
Please help!

hmmmm, I have had a few yoda sabers and I never run onto this issue. New one to me.

It sorta sounds like it may have been left in the heat. I would google around to see if their is a conditioner or method for re-newing rubber.

Yes, I'm also wondering if this will work, because mine used Yoda has the same problem - rubber is kinda sticky and unfriendly looking. If anyone knows other methods to deal with it - I'd be greatly appreciated.

mine did this (or something similar), it felt tacky and appeared like the surface of the grip was sort of peeling/disintigrating.  I ended up using a cloth towel and rubbing all the sticky stuff off and they now seem brand new, smooth to the touch and look perfect.

I don't know if its the same thing you are seeing here, but you may test a small spot and see if just rubbing it off cleans it up.  it felt on mine as if it was some kind of coating on the surface of the rubber.

i did not try any cleaner, so i can't speak to that although it might make the process easier. i wasn't sure what was happening to the grip, so i didn't apply any cleaner or chemical to the rubber and  they came clean with friction so i left it at that.

Necrothread, I know.

I want to add for anyone who comes across this problem that dish detergent and a rag (plus a little fingernail scraping) did the trick.  The grips are hard plastic with a rubbery coating as opposed to being rubber all the way through.  Once the coating that is breaking down is removed, it will be fine, but the smooth plastic is a wee slippery in hand.
