Title: Slothfurnace's 'Derelict' - Finish pics, and video link
Post by: slothfurnace on September 14, 2010, 11:54:27 AM
Well, folks, I am in between tasks on my other sabers, waiting on parts and whatnot, so I started poking through my parts bin and found some things I can fiddle with while I am waiting..

So to start with, a sketch -

(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.slothfurnace.com%2Fimages%2Fcustom3%2F000.jpg&hash=e116f5e64ef6c54b9054533ad670ac4c44bb4e58) (http://www.slothfurnace.com/images/custom3/000.jpg)

This should be close to what I am going for.  I will have to cut into that oddball graflex (if it is a graflex) top to make it into a rear shroud for the MHS ribbed extension.

(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.slothfurnace.com%2Fimages%2Fcustom3%2F001.jpg&hash=2376b6ca0aff671236dbbbd72d23f7740566085a) (http://www.slothfurnace.com/images/custom3/001.jpg)

This is the pommel, it's an acerocket that I have had for a while.  I jumped at the chance to pick up this rare piece, but don't really have the desire to make an AOTC Obi hilt, because that's been done... so I weathered it up and started wearing off the anodization on the lathe.

(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.slothfurnace.com%2Fimages%2Fcustom3%2F002.jpg&hash=e455895affb95577f49ba6903f147228d3e9bad9) (http://www.slothfurnace.com/images/custom3/002.jpg)

Here's the oddball graflex top I was referring to.  I ended up with this section off ebay for about 20 bucks, and have been holding on to it for a while now, not knowing what I'd do with it.

(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.slothfurnace.com%2Fimages%2Fcustom3%2F003.jpg&hash=9a9dd85fc1e57d961f25a7d8e1b7e71e8ca164c1) (http://www.slothfurnace.com/images/custom3/003.jpg)

I like this top section because it's beat up, has extra details the normal graflex tops don't have, and it's familiar yet unique.

You can also see the TCSS blade adapter installed.  It took a LOT of effort to get that in there,  I don't think the "graflex" top I have is in spec, because I had to drive the adapter in there with a hammer and punch.  I can get it out the same way if I have to, but I think it's in there good for now.

(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.slothfurnace.com%2Fimages%2Fcustom3%2F004.jpg&hash=434f489ada6e1297e198591912171644556b94ef) (http://www.slothfurnace.com/images/custom3/004.jpg)

At this point, I ran across an extra triangle ring from a ROTJ project, and thought I'd install it in one of the pommel cubes.

(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.slothfurnace.com%2Fimages%2Fcustom3%2F005.jpg&hash=9e3a631d1169f8cc81ca9fdeec45bd5de5c2d27e) (http://www.slothfurnace.com/images/custom3/005.jpg)

After flattening one side with a dremel so I could get my drill bit into it without it walking off the slope, I drilled through it with a 1/8 bit.

(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.slothfurnace.com%2Fimages%2Fcustom3%2F006.jpg&hash=d2318e5b7b9984d1fcee2dc37306840b161a3bd9) (http://www.slothfurnace.com/images/custom3/006.jpg)

Here you see the triangle ring installed, I may pass a set screw into it to keep it from wandering back and forth, but keeping it loose enough to hinge.

(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.slothfurnace.com%2Fimages%2Fcustom3%2F007.jpg&hash=a6e24314149d2aa8bd459645dcb6169b0b9644e5) (http://www.slothfurnace.com/images/custom3/007.jpg)

Here it is with the parts I have so far.

Got my extension in from TCSS today, and testfit.  Looks like it's going to work.

I will have to trim down the diameter a tad just so it will fit inside the graflex top, and maybe cut down some length.

And I will definitely have to beat it up some, it's way too pretty right now.

Right now it's a bit too long, and I haven't cut the shroud into the gflex top, and the control box is just sitting there, but you can see where it's going.

I know this hilt will be nothing short of awesome!  I'm already excited about seeing how it is going to turn out.  Just how you have it set up right now seems like it couldn't get any better, but having seen your previous builds I just know that, you are going to continue to blow my mind through the whole process.  I've been waiting to see what you could do when making a custom saber.   It gots an obi/starkiller kind of feel to it already (which happen to be 2 of my favorite hilts in the star wars universe).

Hey! That's the graflex top I was going to bid on but my internet was down.  :(

But clearly it is going to be used in another awesome slothfurnace saber, so an incredible home it has found.  ;D

Looks great so far!

You may want to consider skipping the control box, and using a graflex button or the rivet as a slider switch instead of the control box.

It would make for a sleeker design.

Wow this is an exiting project to follow.
It has the best of everything.
Normally I don't like controlboxes, but kept this flat is very nice.
Won't give problems in your hand.
On the other hand, what to do with the holes near the emitter?

You know how to draw too.
Looks pretty darn good on paper, but the parts I've seen so far shows that this saber will be even more beautyfull.

Thank you everyone!  This saber is kind of a doodle in progress, so we'll see how it turns out...

(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.slothfurnace.com%2Fimages%2Fcustom3%2F010.jpg&hash=1ab04516382cfe30a05ed4bcdd61b2cad85b1a08) (http://www.slothfurnace.com/images/custom3/010.jpg)

Here I have my template from 3dMAX and photoshop printed out and taped on to my Gflex section, to see if I like where the cuts will be.

(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.slothfurnace.com%2Fimages%2Fcustom3%2F011.jpg&hash=141d1e4bd40f78ddb8a9ac4685dfa98fef6e5c2e) (http://www.slothfurnace.com/images/custom3/011.jpg)

And after a good bit of dremel-fu, and an application of some Birchwood Casey brass black to the newly exposed yellow brass section, it's beginning to come together.   The ribbed MHS piece is a bit too clean still, I want to darken or better yet anodize it so it gives contrast to the shrouded back end of the gflex top.

Ok.... sloth.... you've successfully made ANOTHER thread to be excited about and follow :)

VERY beautiful design (nifty use of the Acerocket pommel with how you stripped the black and added the triangle on it)... and I can't wait to see the end product...

Will this also feature another beauty of a crystal chassis?

So any progress on this beauty? I know you are working on the double-bladed saber but this one ranks right up there on my all-time favorites.

Very nice design. That is indeed a real Graflex upper section. If I am not mistaken it is an older model than was used for Luke's saber (late '30s to early '40s)

So any progress on this beauty? I know you are working on the double-bladed saber but this one ranks right up there on my all-time favorites.

Oh yeah, sorry... I have had some progress on this saber....

I decided to install the graflex clamp lever I have into the new TCSS box...

(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.slothfurnace.com%2Fimages%2FCustom3%2F013.jpg&hash=204b693bd646ab48b1f43b727d83f911db8a6f25) (http://www.slothfurnace.com/images/custom3/013.jpg)

I drilled a hole through the side of the TCSS box, and a larger hole on the otherside for the thinned nut.

(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.slothfurnace.com%2Fimages%2FCustom3%2F012.jpg&hash=4c622f86fcfb3095c25e9e8681b469d7bcc7956a) (http://www.slothfurnace.com/images/custom3/012.jpg)

It makes the saber feel more "original trilogy"   Which is what I am going for.

(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.slothfurnace.com%2Fimages%2FCustom3%2F014.jpg&hash=46f52c7ab271ef43224190f8619c1ee81b280c12) (http://www.slothfurnace.com/images/custom3/014.jpg)

Here's a shot of the freshly painted middle ribbed section. I wanted to enhance the contrast between the graflex shroud and the middle area, to bring out the curves more. I may weather this down a bit some. I also need to cut a hole for the AV switch for the box.

(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.slothfurnace.com%2Fimages%2FCustom3%2F015.jpg&hash=996fbb0c6fea7d2c4b75de808ae6516483b19d7b) (http://www.slothfurnace.com/images/custom3/015.jpg)

A little work on the emitter, made from found pieces and a chunk of steel I dished and polished to mirror smooth so it reflects the blackened metal gear piece I have around the machined brass LED holder.

(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.slothfurnace.com%2Fimages%2FCustom3%2F016.jpg&hash=c12e6d30c8c3f6ffc34c7115e54b217e484347ec) (http://www.slothfurnace.com/images/custom3/016.jpg)

I like the way the outer steel piece reflects the grooves in the gear.

(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.slothfurnace.com%2Fimages%2Fcustom3%2F017.jpg&hash=c0ebc7a9753aa5d557b8768cc0d51c3f2df25fdb) (http://www.slothfurnace.com/images/custom3/017.jpg)

Last night I decided to widen the switchbox slot  a bit on the Milling machine.  Much easier to true it all up with that as opposed to using files and whatnot.

(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.slothfurnace.com%2Fimages%2Fcustom3%2F018.jpg&hash=a47d067fca3258e11622b3600f08a7e9ccb987a9) (http://www.slothfurnace.com/images/custom3/018.jpg)

I also milled a slot for the back grip section screw, threaded the hole for that, and installed a black dome screw.  Also found some black oxide hex cap screws to mount the switchbox on with.  I had to mill out underneath the switchbox enough of a hole to fit the AV switch.

(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.slothfurnace.com%2Fimages%2Fcustom3%2F019.jpg&hash=5e6992b0bda8fe7f63b66ac1b98af4e0a91a2b80) (http://www.slothfurnace.com/images/custom3/019.jpg)

(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.slothfurnace.com%2Fimages%2FCustom3%2F020.jpg&hash=81a2da899fe3a32f1ca3f44ce1a677b7b1e91aa1) (http://www.slothfurnace.com/images/custom3/020.jpg)

The PC-U installed finally, and a spare white LED for now.  A red LedEngin on the way for this one.

(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.slothfurnace.com%2Fimages%2FCustom3%2F021.jpg&hash=5176e5fb1b925346852fb40561b971f07a6b10c0) (http://www.slothfurnace.com/images/custom3/021.jpg)

I also found a CB Radio cable plug ferrule that fits the threading of the graflex, and really simulates the "red button" enclosure.  This will be my blade retention knob.

(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.slothfurnace.com%2Fimages%2FCustom3%2F022.jpg&hash=9efc3669949a67941cf8c1f528f2bf4740cb47b9) (http://www.slothfurnace.com/images/custom3/022.jpg)

A shot with the lever and such installed. I'll need to shorten a few screws next, as I've had to put spacers in so the front box screw and the rear grip screw don't push too far into the electronics and whatnot.

(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.slothfurnace.com%2Fimages%2FCustom3%2F023.jpg&hash=e4c7378982f30263902878527951a121aa5bf9f4) (http://www.slothfurnace.com/images/custom3/023.jpg)

Got my red Ledengins in today!  a quick 5 minute install, and it's cooking red.  I can't tell you how different it looks in person, it's BRIGHT.  At least at the base.   It gets dimmer towards the tip, meh.

(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.slothfurnace.com%2Fimages%2FCustom3%2F024.jpg&hash=eecf3cf34cf21d6f3117cb2b92d5683089f990a9) (http://www.slothfurnace.com/images/custom3/024.jpg)

I'd take a pic of the whole blade, but I am still pretty unimpressed with the tip illumination.  Perhaps when I get the narrower degree lens, it will look better.
The blade is a regular TCSS show blade, the lens is ... I dunno, something I had laying around for a while.  Not sure what it is.

I have a 5 degree lens and such coming from Tim, so we'll see if that helps a bit.  Also I am using stock LED settings for the PC-U.  Az suggests I crank up the power, so I'll do that and have a look.  For now, here's a wide shot.

(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.slothfurnace.com%2Fimages%2FCustom3%2F025.jpg&hash=c248157bc18ef3d7491e5c80fd893f4ce3fcb08e) (http://www.slothfurnace.com/images/custom3/025.jpg)

This one is close to being done, a few minor details and it will be wrapped up.

"It makes the saber feel more "original trilogy"   Which is what I am going for."

It looks like it would be right at home there- I has the subtle detail that would work as a signature hilt.  I especially like the detailing on the emitter- the thin stripes gives it a "Deco" feel that I'm fond of.  Impressive as always.

How would that work  ???, since the bunny ears were at the emitter end. Where the blade goes...

I wasn't sure about the concept at first, putting several parts of different OT sabers together, but the way they are combined really works. I've really liked this saber from the start of you constructing it.

Ok, not to necropost, but I do actually think I finished this one...

(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.slothfurnace.com%2Fimages%2FCustom3%2F026.jpg&hash=c617731f6fc7c5502474a39df468545b0f66a21b) (http://www.slothfurnace.com/images/custom3/026.jpg)

Got my recharge port installed finally. Now I can recharge it without disassembling the whole thing every time it runs out of juice. I milled out an inset for it and drilled and tapped it to fit the threads of the port.

(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.slothfurnace.com%2Fimages%2FCustom3%2F027.jpg&hash=2caf0b70a9ab8e6bc905e9fa19549ee286097d1b) (http://www.slothfurnace.com/images/custom3/027.jpg)

I also have found myself a real graflex red button for the bottom switch hole.

(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.slothfurnace.com%2Fimages%2FCustom3%2F028.jpg&hash=2de80c077e5f41707008fd553434a16e270ad307) (http://www.slothfurnace.com/images/custom3/028.jpg)

I think it looks much more at home than the thing I had on there previously. Also i found a nice section of telescope that fit my one inch diameter blade, and put that in there at the emitter section, to emulate the bulb retainer ring from the "bunny ear" section of the original flashgun.

(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.slothfurnace.com%2Fimages%2FCustom3%2F029.jpg&hash=ad333be6edff587413c5767531aff7f5735255b7) (http://www.slothfurnace.com/images/custom3/029.jpg)

Will put pins and leads in the recharge ports...

(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.slothfurnace.com%2Fimages%2FCustom3%2F030.jpg&hash=f5cddceb7e9662a826b4fe2d73e4c59a6be1fbce) (http://www.slothfurnace.com/images/custom3/030.jpg)

As for what that red button will do, I'll probably install a tactile switch underneath it, and connect it to the PC, at the aux switch connection. So I can trigger extra sounds with that button.

To install a switch under the red button, I snagged a tiny momentary through hole mount switch and folded the leads out, soldered my wires to that and fed it into the shroud.

(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.slothfurnace.com%2Fimages%2FCustom3%2F033.jpg&hash=c73387b48bedc3bf8d086e9b86cca3544d061bb6) (http://www.slothfurnace.com/images/custom3/033.jpg)

Heat shrunk and installed for fit, I'll dab some hot glue over the exposed lead and that will also seat the switch and keep it from moving around.

(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.slothfurnace.com%2Fimages%2FCustom3%2F034.jpg&hash=024e80d384f6d3652a16f33ecb5f0488d8dabbba) (http://www.slothfurnace.com/images/custom3/034.jpg)

And the switch wires run the length of the TCSS graflex adapter channel and into the switch section. I had to mill out a little ramp in the MHS Ribbed piece to allow the wires to transition from section to section without crimping.

(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.slothfurnace.com%2Fimages%2FCustom3%2F035.jpg&hash=31e7a79e26bf53c64649b1c993fe147314884db2) (http://www.slothfurnace.com/images/custom3/035.jpg)

And now that I have all the wiring done I want to do to this saber, it's time to finish out a few details. I placed some short pin contacts in to the holes in the adapter, and modded one of the original graflex connector tabs to fit the shallower hole of the TCSS adapter. I also put a short setscrew in between the red button and emitter to anchor the blade.

(https://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.slothfurnace.com%2Fimages%2FCustom3%2F036.jpg&hash=cf2de2ea0d070d40867419b2d388c31886399bbc) (http://www.slothfurnace.com/images/custom3/036.jpg)

This saber is probably more fun than any of the rest I've made. It's been a great project to put together, and lots of fun once it's finished.

The giant heatsink beneath it will be the basis of my display mount when I get 'round to it.

Here's a vid of all the sound effects and whatnot in action. Thanks for looking!

This is by far my favorite hilt you have done, the design elements blend so nicely together, making it look like it was plucked from a characters hands from the movies.  It is both familiar and new.  This is definetly a saber anyone should be happy to have in their collection.

WOW :o :o :o I absolutley love that saber. Sloth, you did a fantastic job on that thing. I really like sabers with graflex style emiters and this saber really looks nice with the black grips. The saber is very unique with the combination of the Obi-Wan TPM pommel and the graflex emiter. You should be very proud of this saber. Good Luck with your saber and May The Force Be With You Sloth! Also, I would say keep it at work so everyone can say how awesome that thing looks.  ;D

Watching the pics of this saber left a hole in my soul.
It could only be fixed by getting an homage saber, built by QGJ (http://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/index.php?topic=32208.0).

Thank you for creating this inspiring masterpiece.

Is the PC running the 5W Deep Red at its full 1.5 amps? How would it compare to a Lux 3 Red running @ 1.4A?
I think I might need to have that led in my next saber.

Same. Is it just me, or is that the closest red to anything I've seen in the films?
