Ladies and Gentlemen.
This is my first foray into public font production!
I am a huge fan of the 1927 sci-fi epic and masterpiece METROPOLIS and am honouring it with a custom saber that is currently mid-build. I wanted a special font for it and so here it is.
This is an unusual font in that it is orchestral. Making it work was very tough with many sounds discarded along the way even after a ton of work.
But nothing else would capture the epic nature of the film nor do it justice but huge orchestral pads, steam, mechanical noises, electricity etc. There is not a single sound in the font that is not a real recording of a real-world instrument or object, although some of them have been highly processed. I was also acutely aware of John Williams' legacy in Star Wars, and was determined not to disgrace that either.

This is currently optimized for CF8 and other Plectar Lab products. If you would like an NEC version, please let me know: I am still researching how to label the files etc.
I hope you will add this to your collection and enjoy the unique results, I feel like it was well worth the effort in the end.

this is ridiculously awesome and unique. thank you for this!
looking forward to more fonts from you. and if they are as good as this one, I will gladly pay for them.
-
So awesome, I may have to use it for tomorrow night!
I really like the hum in the background. Would it be possible to hear just the hum without the piano and strings?

Edit: Download it again, I have now included 3 hums in total, each with slightly different complexity/musicality to suit different tastes or occasions :azn:

I'll definitely try it. Did you watch the version with Martin Matalon's music on it ?

I have and like both :) But I prefer to listen to his more modern version on its own without watching the film.

really great score, I was just an intern at Ircam at that time, and when it was premiered at the Chatelet teather, it was my first contemporary music concert (film projected + live orchestra + live electronics). Great memories you're bringing back with this font.

It's mindblowing. I hear a lot of Herbie Hancock in there among so much else. I'd cut my arm off to hear it live!

That is a badass hum!! Great work man!

Here's a crappy video of your sound font in action. Do you have a website or something you want me to link up to?
-
Thanks for the offer, but no I don't have anything like that. I might do something soon, but it's still early days in my fontmaking career if there will even be such a thing. I might be forced-to actually, as I don't see any other way of offering custom-made fonts which as you know is what I'd like to do. Time will tell.
-
you can always submit them to saberfont.com
though the wait time is pretty long for first-timers I think as the volunteers running the site (Vader's Vaults Luminaara I think?) are pretty busy right now.

Non custom ones, yeah. But I mean one time only.. one guy, one saber, one font never to be heard anywhere except if that actual saber is in use. For example I did a Fett font for Darkmatter73 to go with his Slave1.5 saber using Slave1's engine noises etc.
I'm working on a sith font at the mo which I intend to submit to saberfont.com, so black I expect people to question my soul

Bring back memories

Just loaded this on a CS saber as a quick test. Absolutely fantastic font - certainly unlike any other font I've come across, and very evocative of the flilm. Loving the multiple layers on the default hum - will have to try the alternate hums, and load it onto a CF saber at some point. Also might tone down the volume a bit on the 'landscape' loop and try it out as a menu background.
Many thanks for sharing it
-
Thanks for your kind words :) Very welcome.
-
Downloaded. Can't wait to try it out. Thanks for this - two thumbs way up!
-
Very nice font.
I tested all three hums with two different sabers and in the end I choose the second one.
As my fiancée said, hum #2 is the epic version in the pack :azn:
Many thanks for sharing it !
-
Very welcome. Glad I added the hum variations now, it seems everyone has a different preference :)
I have plans to make a heavy metal font soon, all live samples handmade.
-
Dude, wow, wow, wow! I downloaded it and just listened to it like that and man, it's awesome. I'm a hum snob and yours ranks at the top of the list of very cool lightsaber hums. I'm hoping my rev-n elite will be shipping soon, as soon as I get it, i'll be dropping this one onto the sd card for sure!
If you need any help with optimizing it for NEC boards (which I'd love an NEC version too since my mhs saber will be running igniter 2) let me know, I kind of understand the naming process and how to mix the files.
-
Very nice font
I can see this one making its way onto the Killer Penny.
Thanks
Corbin

That's what I thought! I already switched plans for my next project to a steampunk themed one, because this font is dead on target for this...
@ TheBaconWizard Shall I post your recent lockup sound here - just for the sake of completeness? :cheesy:
-
eheheheh, everyone is welcome to have that lockup
I get a bit emotional at the thought of this steaming away in the Killer Penny. And that's the 2nd person now who has asked about an NEC version.
I will make one. :lamp:
-
I'd like to hear the different lockup if it's available
-
Great job! Very atmospheric and evocative

The lockup sound I mentioned has actually nothing to do with the Metropolis font. That's part of a running gag between TheBaconWizard and me...

Stop telling lies, you just don't want to share its awesomeness with others. Or are you trying to save them from its sheer power?
Here ya go MikeyX, sorry about this guy.

Well it definitely has 'power'... :cheesy:

Lies? Just one white lie! You gave it to ME! And I said properly Thank You! Now you're sharing it with others!

Well it definitely has 'power'... :cheesy:
Yasss! I expect you have installed it on all your sabers already

Working my way through installing it on all of them right now...

Never gonna happen, but it would be as funny as heck if anyone had it installed and forgot until showing a friend or an audience his/her awesome lightsaber....
-
FYI, I've done several events now with my curved hilt saber with the Metropolis inspired font, and absolutely everyone has been floored by it. Your font works very nicely on a Bane inspired saber.

Great!

I did a small customisation to this font that has made me enjoy it even more:
I really like the first two hums and found it hard to choose between them. The distinctive Metropolis 'notes' overlayed on the default hum are fantastic, but there's also something appealing about the second hum that has this removed (and the third hum with the strings removed as well is awesome as well, but I like how the layered sounds make this font more distinctive, which the third one strips away).
Anyways I really wanted to have the best of both hums, so to speak, with the first two - so I loaded the second hum as the main one, and spliced the main hum onto the end of one of the blaster sounds. This means that it has hum2 most of the time, but if I want the 'notes' to kick in just tap the blaster block. The crossing point is the same, so it transitions nicely back to the main hum after the 14s or so of the loop, and by default you can interrupt it with a clash or lockup (but not a swing) to get back to the main hum. Currently still have this on a CS saber, so I only have one blaster block - on a CF this could be done with the third one as well to mix things up even more (although this might be going a bit too far!). Also on a CF as I remember you can configure the blaster priority which would affect this.
Anyways, just thought I'd mention this as I think it works brilliantly with this great unique font - thanks again for this one.
-
That's a really cool idea! Nice!
-
Got to try out the font yesterday on my brand new Rev-n, man it sounds so good on a saber, it's my favorite so far..
Thanks again!
-
that sounds great!
-
Just loaded this font on my Dr Who themed saber! It is awesome! Thank you!
-
I am only just now checking this out....
WOW!! I got a bit of an education and this is spectacular!!!! So much more than a soundfont!! What an amazing piece!! WELL DONE!!!

This font is superb; I love it! I think I am going to have to build a lightsaber worthy of it!! :cheesy:

Wow yourself! Thanks, I really appreciate high praise from someone with your skills and prolific creativity. I love the sounds that you and Lord Blako both produce above all.
I do plan to continue to make fonts as I learn and I have 3 waiting for approval on saberfont.com
funny story: one of the first fonts I made once I felt I had the chops to do it was a Predator font which I had planned to release as a freebie.
Only afterwards did I find yours (which is awesome btw) and I REALLY love the AVP font too which I will be purchasing.

Join the club! Hehe. Thanks man, that's an enormous compliment. Is that an Imperial Knight in yr avatar?
-
awesome font and so loud
-
Yes I know this topic is old, but I have something to offer. I love that I found this font, much love to the OP.
I tweaked and remixed and added and made smoothswings etc...
The naming convention is for use on my proffieboard, your mileage may vary.
However, I can not post an external link........Not trying to break the rules, so would someone let me know how to share here?
-
I'd definitely love to check that out! I used this font as the "Infinity Mode" in my Infinity Saber.
-
Probably because I have only lurked and never posted, so I have no status and can't post a link in the forum yet. But I can PM links, so....
** EDIT ** Good now. See link a couple of posts down from here ;)
-
This is fantastic, thanks for sharing!
