The Golden Saber Challenge - CONTEST THREAD
« on: February 15, 2022, 01:52:58 PM »
OK, here are the entrants for the 2022 FX-Sabers “Golden Saber” Challenge Contest.

Just to review:

Quote
Inspired by the James Bond film of a similar name and Rebels' Kanan Jarrus, the idea behind this one is simple, but the execution difficult: to make a working saber that can be assembled and disassembled.

The Spirit of the Challenge:

-To make, in whatever way the contestants think possible, a working lightsaber that can be broken down in to multiple parts and reassembled, both internally and externally, with a minimum of tools. This is *not* just a matter of simply unscrewing an MHS saber, removing the chassis and calling it done.

-A finished saber should be made of multiple independent components. These parts should fit together in a way that requires no parts other than the independent components, and hold together as a functional saber.

-This can be accomplished in any way the contestants wish. If you want to make fifteen separate props so that you can take the barrel extension off your blaster and screw it into your droid caller’s frame and turn it on with your thermal detonator’s switch, then more power to you, but it isn’t a mandatory requirement. Conversely, Kanan Jarrus would also be accepted, but only if he broke his saber down even further.

-Corran Horn’s saber is an example of a halfway complete challenge saber: made from junk found lying around a cantina and scrapyard, and recognisable mostly as a swoop bike handle. Master Horn would be disqualified, however, as he meditated his saber’s internals into one solid piece that would be impossible to take apart.

Requirements:

1: Make a working custom saber, with or without sound.
2: That can be entirely assembled and disassembled with a minimum of tools
3: And incorporate multiple independent components

Eligible entries must:

1: Include a minimum of four independent sub-components
2: Light up, be disassembled, reassembled, and light up again
3: Be executed, to the highest extent possible, adhering to the spirit of these guidelines*

You all will get one vote (which can’t be changed, so choose wisely) to vote for your favorite entrant. The poll will close in two weeks (March 2) and either I  or one of the FX Admins will officially announce the winner when the time comes.

Let the game begin.  :police:

But FJK, I can't choose Wisely. Wisely didn't enter a saber in this contest

Kidding aside, dang, you guys have made some absolutely amazing sabers. I'm genuinely stuck on who to vote for this time.

Well done, everyone!

BUMP - There is around a week left before the voting ends.

I find your arguments vague and unconvincing.

OK everyone, the voting has OFFICIALLY CLOSED!

And the winner is… Smuggler’s Combo!!

I have to say, I actually agreed with the the way this poll went, as I had these entrants rated in the places they actually finished at.

If you want to play “guess who did what” for a day or two before everyone posts their stuff, have at it.

When can we get a video conversation going for the contestants and others who want to join in on the discussion?

Wasn’t SpaceWindu involved in doing that after the last contest?

Pretty sure he was. I missed it as I had to be out of town when he hosted.

Congrats to Smugglers Combo. A worthy winner which best nailed the brief with nice use of ‘in universe’ parts. As did Rebel Jedi with the blaster parts that make up a sweet looking saber.  I’m guessing one was by Iggy and one was by Scott (maybe? but I’m not sure which). And one was mine.  Pity there were not more entries, given the time extension. But still, a fun challenge nonetheless. Excellent work guys.

Greenie.

So it looks like Greenie was CYPRIUM, which means Iggy was smugglers combo since I cleaned up the scraps with rebel.  Happy to be in the running with those great creations.  I wish we had more entries (and votes), but was still fun!

You got me. Smugglers Combo was me. I really wanted to stick to a bunch of tools on a belt and the best example I could think of was Han’s belt since he had so many little things in the OT.

Loved the other entries. Also wish we had more.

Hopefully we can get a video session together to show parts and pieces and talk about each.

I never got around to installing my second saber for the contest, but I can show what I was working on with that one when we video chat.

Haven’t seen Anthony post for a bit, so not sure if he is planning any future saber talk livestreams…that is what we did last year, and it was also thunders opportunity to unveil his saber.

Also going on record that my description was edited after I submitted it to add all of the “obnoxious” qualifiers…hopefully that didn’t offend or turn anyone off!

While I wish I had entered, I'm kinda glad I didn't in hindsight. Now that I've seen the competition, I can safely say that the version of the saber that I would have been ready then just wasn't good enough to compete with the entries here. The version I'm working on now has definitely benefited from a bit more extra time and research, and I hope to have something fancy to present to the forum...soonish.

Not trying to build up suspense, just that my next few weekends are stupidly busy.

...And I'm fighting very hard to try and prevent Darth Feature Creep taking hold.
